Say Something

For the Rockin' Lyrics competition. Rated Yellow for language. I do not own the Avengers, or any Marvel Comics character or element used in this story; Stan Lee does. Nor do I own the song Say Something--Christina Aguilera and a Great Big World do.

1. Say Something

Say something, I'm giving up on you.
I'll be the one, if you want me to.
   Anywhere, I would've followed you.
Say something, I'm giving up on you.

How did she let this happen? She was supposed to be the Black Widow. She was supposed to be an Avenger. She was supposed to help save the world. But she couldn't even save her best friend. Natasha watched as, ever so slightly, Clint's chest rose and fall and his breaths became shallower and shallower. Tears burned at her eyes with the rising threat of falling. But she had to be strong.
And I am feeling so small.
  It was over my head.
  I know nothing at all.

Clint’s eyelids flickered open for a moment. “Nat…” He rasped. She almost didn’t hear him. “I’m sorry. And I know, Clint, that I shouldn’t be. But I feel like it’s my fault. And…don’t go, okay? I need you to stay.”
“You…know…I can’t…do…that.”
And I will stumble and fall
  I'm still learning to love
  Just starting to crawl.

His time was almost up, Natasha knew. He was fighting to give her a few more minutes to say goodbye. Here she was, wasting it. “Goodbye, Clint…” He weakly wrapped his hand around hers and she let him. She was taught not to care. Her whole life, she had been taught not to love. But now…now all that didn’t matter. He took one more breath. Watching, she waited for more, but they didn't come.
The great Hawkeye had died.

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
  Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you.
And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
  And I'm saying goodbye

Now it didn't matter if she cried or not, if she was weak or not, if she cared or not. She sat there a long time, in shock. Not crying. Just...sitting there. With his hand, growing cold, wrapped around hers. Finally she looked at him again, and a whole stream of tears took action. He was gone. He was really gone. Clint Barton was dead. Hawkeye was gone. Her friend had left her.

Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
And anywhere, I would have followed you
Oh, oh, oh, oh say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something.
