Her aunt came outside and told her it was time to come in. She got up.
"I have to go." She sighed.
"So do I." I sighed.
"Goodnight." She said.
She kissed my cheek and went inside.
I stood in shock.
I walked home and when I opened the door, dad was there, once again.
"What?" I asked.
"You're home late, again."
"I know." I smirked and turned away.
He grabbed my arm and punched me in the face.
I fell on the floor and he walked up the stairs.
The next day at school, I sat alone.
"Hey, why didn't you sit with me?" Aaron asked.
"Just... want to be alone. That's all."
"Jacob, tell me."
"Only because you're my friend." I sighed and took off my sunglasses.
"Dude! What happened?"
"My dad punched me last night and I can't hang out with you anymore because I need to get my life back on track." I said quickly.
I could see the hurt in his eyes as he walked away.
As I got home, Dad was standing by the door.
"I am so terribly sorry for my tardiness. I shall practice the flute now." I said and went to my room.
"There's my son." I heard my dad say as I went into my room.
I picked up my flute and the song book.
I was supposed to practice a song that was about being forgotten. Tears rolled down my cheek and a horrible noise came out of the flute. Dad walked in.
"Sorry, sir. I'll get better." I sighed and dad left the room.
I heard a rock hit my window. I looked to see Cora outside.
"I'm going to get the mail for you, Father." I said and went outside.
When Cora saw me, her eyes widened.
"What happened to your eye?" She asked.
"Nothing. What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I wanted to ask you something." She said.
"I can't talk right now. I'm practicing flute."
"You can't talk to me for five minutes?"
I shook my head and went to the mailbox.
"I was just going to ask if you want to go out sometime but now all I want to say is... I can't believe I thought you'd stay." She said and stormed away.
I felt my heart break into a thousand pieces and I went inside and gave my dad the mail.
As everyone slept, I got the suitcase out of my closet and started packing. I got dressed and sneaked out of the front door with my suitcase.
Everything was silent, and the streets were empty.
My heart was beating fast, and my hands were sweaty. I sighed and grabbed my suitcase. The bus stop was near the park. I walked to the park, with tears running down my cheek. Soon, a bus pulled up and I sighed.
"I guess this is it." I whispered to myself.
I got on the bus and leaned my head on the window. The bus drove off and I felt a huge weight off of my shoulders. At the next stop, i got off right away. I felt someone tap on my shoulder as the buss drove away. I turned around to see Cora.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"It doesn't matter. Why are you talking me anyways?" I asked.
"Because I care. You may not believe a word I say, but I do."
"Look, I have to go." I sighed.
"Where are you going?" Cora asked.
"I don't know, and I don't care."
I walked away.
"I need you..." I heard Cora say.
I looked behind me to see Cora walking away.
I ran after her, pushing my way through people.
I caught up to her and grabbed her hand.
She looked at me.
"What?" She growled.
I let go of her hand and sighed.
"I'm sorry, okay? I know I keep messing things up and causing everybody pain. Nothing is simple anymore. I used to know everything that would happen in my life... but now, I have no idea, and that scares me."
She looked at me in silence.
"I don't know anything anymore." I sighed.
"Jacob, nobody knows what's going to happen. You have to take risks." Cora said, looking into my eyes.
I stared back into her eyes. I saw all of the pain and sadness that she's been through.
I leaned in.
Our lips touched and I held her hand.
"You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that." I said, my cheeks getting red.
She smiled and hugged me. I held her tight.
When we got back into town, we walked to Cora's house. We walked inside her and she went up to her aunt.
"I was wondering if Jacob could stay here for a while?" Cora asked her.
"I'll be keeping an eye out to make sure you two don't do anything." She said.
"Thank you, ma'am."
"I'll show you the guest room." Cora's uncle said.
"Thank you , sir." I smiled as we got to the room.
"No problem." He said and left.
I put the suitcase on the bed and started unpacking.
