The Sapphire Experiment

Test subject X32-A never knew life outside the Grey Compound. That was before the fire started. Sapphire, as most of the scientists dub her as, is lost in the City. And with the Association, a rogue group that was responsible for the fire that killed everyone she knew, hunting her down; she knew she had little to no chance on survival. That was before a boy that looked so much like test subject V47-D came though. [Less Than A Thousand Words Challenge]

2. Cityscape

I tightened my hands around the fabric that hid my soot-covered body, acting as my cloak. I had found it in the bin near the exit of the compound and used it to shelter me from the cold. It was dark now. I had been walking for hours now and the compound was nowhere in sight. It was like a desert out here. Sand stretched out throughout the place, with only a solitary road to guide me to where I should go.

I looked down at my bare feet which was now coated with dirt. It contrasted with my pale skin. I shook my head and looked up to the now darkening sky, knowing I should find a place to stay for the night.

A City. I heard them call it from their many conversations about it. I recalled Mr. Dimitri saying his sister lived in one; Miss Susan, too. It was nothing like I had expected.

The lights brightly shone from afar, too conspicuous for my liking. With my heightened hearing, I could hear the various sounds that the City made. Talking. Laughing. Honking. Yelling.

I stopped in my tracks, hesitating on how I should proceed. With my scorned white dress and dirty look, I doubted that I would fit in quite easily. I also remembered Miss Susan say something about the paper things they used for transactions. Money. I did not have that.

I was too focused on pondering about how I would go in that I did not hear the sounds of vehicles rapidly approaching until they were only a few meters away from me. My eyes widened.

"There!" I heard someone yell out. I did not turn to look and ran towards the City.

I had no other choice.

"And we've been wasting the night away..." the music flowed through my eardrums until it faded away from the distance.

I ignored their stares as I ran deeper into the City. Some were frowning while the others looked merely concerned for the girl who looked like she just came out of a fire. A vehicle honked as I crossed the street, foregoing everyone who were waiting at the sidewalk.

I was passing an alleyway when a hand grabbed me from the side.

"Are you trying to get yourself killed?!" The voice hissed at me just as a bullet whizzed past where I was standing earlier. A lady screamed. I turned to look at the stranger. My eyes widened.

"V47-D?"

The boy frowned and released my arm.

"Who are you?"
