The Goldberg sisters are imperfect. Kylie is a bipolar who just came out as bi. Rosin has been in the hospital 7 times for suicide attempts, and has 6 digits on her hands and feet from her unborn twin. Margaret was born 2 months premature, and somehow survived with no physical deformities. Her brain is a bit underdeveloped and slow, but she still sticks to her age level. She has Borderline Personality Disorder, ADHD, and Panic Disorder. She also has differently colored eyes. Their parents just wish that the girls were normal...maybe even perfect. When a man claiming to be a doctor shows up on their doorstep carrying a serum that will supposedly wipe away the girls’ imperfections, the Goldbergs are shocked and thrilled. Their parents are all for using their girls to test out the serum. The serum works, but the girls eventually discover terrifying side effects - side effects that could kill them. Can they find a way to stop the serum from destroying them completely?

3. It All Comes in Twos

When our parents come home the next day from their cruise and find out what happened, the difference of their reactions is practically bipolar - and I think Kylie would agree. Mom sighs, then abruptly crumples onto the couch and starts crying. Dad explodes, storming up to Rosin’s room. Mom, Kylie, and I can hear him yelling from through the floor.(Rosin’s room is right above the living room.)

Kylie and I look at each other, unsure of what to do about Mom.

    The doorbell suddenly rings.

“Thank God,” Kylie mutters, crossing over to the door. She opens it to reveal Hannah, her girlfriend. “Hey, nice timing, Han. They just got home.” She pulls Hannah inside, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. Mom sits up, wiping the tears from her face, and stands to greet Hannah. “Well, hello. Are you a friend of Kylie’s?”

Kylie takes a deep breath. “Actually, Mom...this is my girlfriend.”

Mom’s pleasant face freezes, almost falling and shattering against the hardwood floor. She manages to keep her composure, though. “Girlfriend? As in...”

“Yes, Mom, we’re dating. We kiss. We...”

“Love each other.” brave Hannah pipes up. Kylie looks at her, and I can see in her eyes that Hannah has spoken the truth.

“Yes. We love each other.” She turns back to Mom. “I’m bisexual. I’m attracted to both guys and girls.”

    Mom blinks. “Bi.”

    “’re still...half normal?”

Rage glows in Kylie’s eyes. Instead of replying, she grabs Hannah’s hand and storms out the front door, slamming it behind her.

God, I hope that comment didn’t just send her into a swing.

Mom has slowly sunk into the couch again. “First bipolar. Now bisexual? Why does everything have to come in twos...”

Oh, boy. Now she’s going to start thinking about Rachel, Rosin’s unborn twin. All that remains of her is the extra digits on Rosin’s fingers, where the lifeless fetus of Rachel somehow morphed with Rosin’s still-forming body.

Looks like it’s my time to scoot on out of here.
