The Brighter Things

Every other day this month, I'm going to share three good things and the reasons why.

6. 11/05/2016

1. I'm grateful for having a place to live. I may complain that our kitchen is too small, or that all of our furniture is too close together, or that my brother got the bigger bedroom, but this house is a place that I can call my home.

2. I'm grateful for laughter and bad puns and inside jokes and references to books or TV shows. Without these little things to enjoy or brighten up a conversation, the world would be a sad place.

3. I'm grateful for Van Gogh, because he gives me a little bit of hope for myself. He was someone who believed that he was average, not really good at anything, someone who was destined to live an average life with an average death. He was probably someone who thought that no one would remember him or care when he was gone. He referred to one of his most well-known paintings - The Starry Night - as a failure in one of his letters. Even though he believed that there wasn't anything particularly unique or incredible about him, he still became an artist whose work had an impact on our culture and influenced many other artists. He became one of the most famous artists of all time. (Sidenote: Van Gogh's last words were "The sadness will last forever".)
