Just as I unbuckled my seatbelt Damon's hand grabbed mine. His deep, ice-blue eyes looked right into my pale brown ones, as if he were searching for something in them.
"Emma I must say something, and I must say it now because I don't know what will happen when we go through those doors." Damon said, now gazing forward into the horizon, where the sun was slowly starting to set.
I could tell this was important, which is why I didn't interrupt him. I know what he was about to say was hard for him, because he wasn't his usual confident self. He was breathing heavily, and his eyes were hesitant. He didn't remove his hand from mine though.
"Emma I know you think of me as a careless, arrogant, impulsive and every negative trait you can think of. And this isn't me trying to prove you wrong, because you're not wrong. I am careless, arrogant and impulsive but most of all I'm selfish. And there's no way in hell I'll let anything happen to you because I'm selfish. You don't know this but I've been trying to keep you alive ever since I've met you. From slipping on ice, to getting hit by a basket-ball and now the Lord of the Dead. And I'm sorry but I don't care who has to die as long as I've kept you safe and alive. That's why I'm telling you now, we can try to save your mother but if any harm comes towards you, I'm taking you out of there and driving you far far away because I'm that selfish. Please don't expect me to be a hero tonight, or any other night. That's all." he confessed, and after that we stayed in silence for a whole minute. He then got out the car, and quickly opened the door for me as well.
"Damon I don't think of you as careless or arrogant or selfish. I think you want me to think that. And I'm not leaving until my mother is safe and alive, but thank you for looking out for me." I said, and walked up the front porch of a dark reddish-brown Victorian house.
Just as I was about to knock, my phone vibrated in my back pocket. I quickly took it out and looked at the screen: Mom.
After sharing a puzzled look with Damon, I answered.
"Emma! Where are you?! Why did you leave Eli and Stefan alone? That's very rude, Stefan is a guest here! Come back now!" Mom's voice came through the other line.
"Mom where are you?" I asked, very very confused.
"Home, where you should be. Hurry home now!" she replied, hanging up.
I looked at Damon, who looked at me with widened eyes which meant he heard everything.
"Hurry! Now!" he whispered, grabbing my hand and quickly putting me inside the passenger's seat, and getting into the driver's seat in a matter of seconds. When we were both safely in the car, he started driving as fast as he could, towards the same way we came from.
"That was too close. We were so dumb and blind. How could we be so dumb and blind?" Damon yelled while driving in rage.
"I mean I'm the one who figured out that dead creatures can't do anything to humans.. How could I have fallen for something as stupid as Mom-getting-kidnapped?" Damon continued.
"Damon you showed humanity for the first time. You tried to save my mom, and even if you deny it, it was a selfless act. Thank you for that." I said, trying to calm him down by reassuringly stroking his arm.
"I only did it for you." he replied, not keeping his eyes off the road.
Of all the unrealistic things I'd discovered in the past few days, I think Damon's humanity was the most unexpected one. I never would've expected me to be the one that brought it out of him. All though Damon tried to annoy me, his undeniable loyalty towards me was starting to make me believe there was good in him. Everything he had said earlier kept replaying in my mind. The whole "I'm selfish" speech and how his eyebrows were furrowed, and his hand was gripping mine tightly, while the veins in his neck popped out. He was so different from Stefan. He was so territorial, so protective and not at all gentle. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't an angel either. But I'm just happy I got to witness a selfless Damon, during my time on Earth.
Anyways, I can't believe the Lord of the Dead or whatever tried to lure me to him by using such a cheap trick. He can't even come into contact with human beings, how could he have kidnapped my mom? Does he honestly think that I won't get him back for trying to scare me and my brother? Especially for hurting my brother? He will pay.
