Breaking the chain

Heather Reid a sixteen year old girl is found collapsed in Howdon - she has run away from her home on West Percy road North Shields, because she is pregnant. She is taken to Willington Quay Maternity hospital where upon she gives birth to a baby Girl that she names Dawn because the dawn was breaking when she was giving birth. After complications set in Heather dies of Toxaemia and her father will not bring up a bastard child. Dawn is adopted by two university lecturers - follow her story as her real father seeks her out and a court battle ensues. this is a tragic story that will have you reading until the end.

“My uncle is called Ray.’

He is a rent collector for the council.’

“I don’t recollect the name but I know a lot of people in North Shields.’

“Well Ray is well known by everyone; what did you say you worked as?’

“I didn’t Helen but I’m a welder down at “Smiths Docks ship repair yard.’

“I will ask him if he knows you the next time we meet.’

“Yes please do.’

The Band carried on with “Sweet Little Sheila” as Brian was being interrogated by Alan’s wife.

Alice could see that her husband was beginning to get himself agitated and asked Helen if she was going anywhere for the summer holidays.’

“Well as it happens Alan and I are going to Majorca in two weeks. We like to get away abroad don’t we Alan.’

Yes love; said Alan as he kept an eye on his watch to make sure that the band didn’t over run.’

“Have you been abroad then Alice?’

“No, I’m fair skinned, I burn easily you know.’

Brian and I have thought about going many times over the years but my skin won’t take the heat.’

“We go to Blackpool every year though don’t we love?’

“Yes pet we do.’

The club runs a trip to Blackpool every year you know and we get special dispensation being the wives of committee men and we go free and all the clubs we go to lay on food and drinks for us. We have been to many shows haven’t we Alan?’

“Who did you see the last time you were there then?’

“We saw Frankie Vaughn, what a hunk he is.’

“We saw Dickie Valentine and Shirley Bassey.’

“Shirley Bassey has got a great voice I watched her last week on Sunday night at the London Palladium.’

“She is even better when you see her live.’

“The Valiant’s finished off the set with Surfing USA by The Beach Boys and Alan went back on stage as the crowd were applauding.’

“Now ladies and Gentlemen if you haven’t seen Bobby Thompson before you’re in for a real treat.’ So here he is. “Bobby Thompson. Bobby walked on stage with a red gansey, his obligatory cigarette hanging from his mouth and an old cap. “Thank you whey I’ve looked around and I bet there’s some debt in here?’ wi my debt and your we could pay off all the war debt we still owe, Eeh am not laughin.’ Now if you believe Bobby Thompson and you pay back what you owe you will never ha nowt.
