Ron Lee introduced the band and they kicked off with “Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly.’
Immediately the girls got up to dance near to where the band was playing. They placed their handbags on the floor and danced around them.
They had only been up on the floor five minutes when over walked three lads who they had seen earlier on the bus.
“Hi.’ we thought we’d come and see what all the fuss was about.’
“So it was nothing to with us then laughed Sally.’
“Well we thought that we would see you lot here as well like.’
What’s your name asked Sally?’
“I’m Jim Gales and these two are Mick Garrity, and Paul King.’
“Do you live in Wallsend then asked Jim?’
“No we come from North Shields.’
“We’re from Whitley bay we follow the bands around as we have a group going ourselves like.’
“Oh yeah and what’s your group called then?’
“We have another member called Barry Smith he is our lead vocalist.’ and our Group is called “The Dune Tunes”
“So Mr Bullshitter what do you play.’
“They don’t believe us said Paul laughing.’
“Well in about half an hour we are going on stage to do a few numbers; so we will see who’s bullshitting.’
“I play rhythm Guitar and do backing vocals, Mick plays the organ, and Kingy plays drums.
“Well we look forward to hearing you said Sally.’
“Well we are waiting for Barry he has the van with our gear; he won’t belong though. Look can we get you a drink?’
“We have one already replied Heather.’
“I mean a proper drink.’
“What have you got like asked Irene.’
“Well we’ve got some vodka that you can put in that lemonade.’
“Have you, hold on I will go and get three glasses.’
Irene went to where they were serving drinks and asked for three glasses. When she returned Jim passed her a half bottle of vodka under the table and she quickly poured some into the three glasses then handed the bottle back.
Right we are going in the back to tune up; we will be back out soon so don’t go away.’
“The lads got up and walked towards a side door where they saw a nice looking lad talking with them before going inside.’
“Look’s like we are in tonight girls; if we play are cards right said Irene.’
Irene topped up the vodka with lemonade and took a sip of it.
“Now that’s better she said as she took an even bigger swallow.’
“Hey,’ take it easy you two I’m not carrying you home.’
Sally laughed as she took a drink from her glass.’
“Oh that’s good.’ try some Heather; it will help you to relax. You have been on tender hooks all night. Lighten up a little bit will you or you will scare the lads off.’
“Heather took a gulp of the vodka in her glass and thought nothing of it. She finished hers in just three swallows.
