meant that they would stay away. Especially if she told them that she had a contagious disease.

Brian came home after finishing his shift. He took off his boots at the door then went inside where he put on a pair of slippers.

“Well the rumours are flying already. A new couple came to look at our old house and Rob black was quick off the mark to point it out.’

“You didn’t tell him about our new house did you; please say you didn’t.’

No, I’ve told no one but they are asking if I am coming down to the Chirton Club to play darts.’

“Well you can go with me on Saturday then I will keep you right if anyone starts asking questions.’ If you get collared alone tell them Agnes has a highly contagious disease. That will keep them away; we don’t want them coming here with their filth ruining our new home.’

“I do believe you are becoming a bit of a snob already Alice.’

“Well we won’t be mixing with their kind for much longer. There are a couple of pubs further up where you can go and then theirs the New York Social club that you can join.

“Alice the dart and domino team do not play against those.’

“Exactly that is why we will go there. Here there’s a fiver get yourself cleaned up put on your suit and after tea go and join the club in New York. Tell them that you own your own property nearby they will gladly take you in.’

Now go wash and shave, I have made you a nice steak and kidney pie with potatoes carrots, cabbage, and peas.’

“Have you love? We don’t even get that on a Sunday, it’s normally a leg of mince.’

“Well the good times are coming Brian Reid, no longer will we have to scrimp and save.

Brian went into the bathroom and took a new Wilkinson’s Sword razor blade and placed it inside the razor and twisted it until it locked then he lathered his face and began to shave away the day’s growth of beard on his face. He hoped that he would not cut himself because he didn’t fancy going out with pieces of news paper on his chin. He took extra care when he got to the point of his chin then rinsed the blade for the next time.’ He splashed some water over his face then dried himself.

He came into the kitchen where Alice was putting out his dinner.’

“My that looks good lass; Brian pulled out a chair then sat down he picked up a fork and was about to start when Alice stopped him.’

“What’s up now?’

We use knives and forks now Brian; we are not pigs.’ We eat properly and we chew our food.’

Brian picked up the knife and fork and cut into the pie he would normally just shovelled the food into his mouth but he took his time chewing every mouthful. He was about to speak with his mouthful and again Alice stopped him. We don’t talk and eat either Brian that is not the done thing around here. You will learn table manners; I don’t want you eating as if you are sitting at a trough when Dawn brings her family here do you understand. ‘

“Yes love he said; now can I finish my dinner in peace please.’

Neither of them uttered another word until they had eaten the last of the food on the plate. Brian thought about licking the gravy from his knife then thought better of it and set them down together as Alice had done.’
