Sally and the others crossed the road and headed to the bus stop further along from the “Penny Whet.”

“They didn’t have long to wait but the woman on board made them pay full fare this time.

They got off on Conniston Road then walked up to the church entrance.

There was an elderly woman sitting down at a table taking the money as they went in. she gave them a ticket and told them to hang onto it as there would be a raffle later where they could win some nice prizes. The hall was already buzzing with people as they danced to some records being played by a young lad who had brought his record collection.

They stood looking around until the found a table near the front and sat down.’

“Are we not buying a drink yet asked Heather?’

“Not yet, just hold your horses for a bit; someone will be over in a minute.’

They sat for fifteen minutes then got up to dance when Elvis Presley sang Jail House Rock.

Oh God Elvis is so sexy; have you seen his eyes said Sally. Now there’s a man I would jump into bed with.’

“Yes,’ but once you got him in there would you know what to do to keep him there?’

“I would have a bloody good try put it that way.’

“You girls want to dance said two lads who wondered across.’

“What does it look like we are doing replied Irene; having a seizure?’

“Can we get you girls a drink then?’

“If you like said Irene; we are drinking lemonade.’

“Alright said the lad with an acne problem; he tried to look cool walking in a pair of new winkle pickers and almost tripped up over a seat as he walked backwards.

His friend who was about two stones overweight nudged him in the side as they went to get the drinks.

“Irene you shouldn’t have encouraged them laughed Sally.’

“We will get a free drink out of them and then I will tell them to get lost.’

“Noddy’s Purple Train began to set up there gear Gladstone Bull tuned his guitar so did Ron Lee who was also a vocalist; Tony Hinds the drummer adjusted the cymbals and did a few drum rolls as Phil and Paul Caffery both lead vocalists did a rehearsal of one of their numbers.

The two lads returned with the drinks and Sally smiled and picked one up and sucked the lemonade through the straw.

Thanks said Irene and passed one to Heather.’

“Have you been here before like?’

“Oh yes we come here a lot don’t we Sal’ said Irene with a smirk.’

“My names John and this is my matey Matty.’

“This is Heather and this is Sally; I’m Irene.’

Glad to meet you all said Matty who was trembling so much he had to put his hands in his pockets which looked rather odd because he looked as if he was actually playing with himself as he stood there.

“Are you girls on your own then?’

“No we are actually with the band over there see that big lad there well that’s Gladstone Bull and he’s my boyfriend and the other one who’s tuning up his guitar is Sally’s; do you want to meet them?’

“No, you’re alright said the Matty as they made a hasty retreat.’

“Irene you are awful you scare the living shit out of “Fatty, I mean Matty there.’
