“What on earth are you wearing Dawn; said her mother as she noticed the Jeans and flowered shirt.’

“Jim bought them for me don’t you like them?’

“No I do not; you look like some hippy freak that you see on the television; please go up stairs and change.’

“No mother I will not; I happen to like them and I am wearing them.’

“You will do no such thing.’

“Mother I’m seven years old now not a baby.’

“Gordon, have you see this; our daughter is dressed like one of those hippies on the television.’

“I happen to think that she looks nice in them Doreen leave he be.’

“See my dad likes them.’

“But what about all those beautiful dresses that I bought you Dawn.’

“We can give them to charity mother; the church is always looking for clothes for the jumble sale.’

“Jumble sale; you want me to take those lovely clothes to a jumble sale.’

Yes mother; I shall not be wearing them.’

“You see Gordon, five minutes with that pop singer and she’s changed already.’

“Doreen she’s just growing up; let her be herself.’

“I think it’s time you gave some of your old clothes away to the church jumble sale too darling; they are out of date.’

“So I’m out of date am I?’

“Not you; just your clothes dear.’

Doreen went to her room and took out some of her old dresses from her wardrobe and put them up against herself.’

“Old fashioned am I she sulked as she put the dresses back into the wardrobe and closed the door. All through dinner Doreen had a long face as Dawn and her father chatted away.’

“I think next weekend we will all go out together Doreen finally said.’

“I cannot mother I’m going to Jims house to meet his girlfriend. She’s Italian and she’s cooking my favourite, Spaghetti Bolognese.’

“Well this isn’t right Gordon every weekend that man comes here and just swans off with our daughter. I mean when do we get to take our daughter out then?’

It will only be for a while Doreen whilst Dawn gets to know her real father.’

“Well I don’t like it one little bit Gordon and I want you to put a stop to it right away.’

“Please ring Ralph and ask him if there is anything that he can do.’

“Alright I will but it was the judges ruling. If we go against him then we could end up alienating him and Dawn as well.’

“We have rights too and I will not be governed by that hippy lout.’

Alright I will ring Ralph and see what he can do.’

Gordon went into his study and picked up the phone; he dialled Ralph’s number and waited until he got an answer.

Hello Ralph, look I know it’s only been a week since the court ruling but Doreen and I are not happy with the arrangement. Why should Jim Gales get to be with Dawn all weekend I we don’t.’

“I don’t think this was a permanent arrangement Gordon, it was just for a period so that Dawn could get to know her biological father.’

“How does Dawn feel about this?

“She hasn’t complained.’ “No not really replied Jim.’
