“You will both have to leave said the nurse as the sister and the doctor ran into the room.

Brian and his wife sat in the corridor for over half an hour before the doctor came out.’

“How is she doctor?’

“I’m afraid I have bad news; we were unable to save your daughter Mr and Mrs Reid she died moments ago. She had lost a great deal of blood during the birth and toxaemia had already set in.’

“I’m very sorry.’

“Can we see her asked Alice?’

“Yes, of course said the doctor.

They went through again to the room where Heather looked for all the world as if she were sleeping. Alice fought back the tears as she looked down on her daughter. The Baby had been taken away from her and put back in the baby unit.

“What are we to do Brian said Alice finally to her husband?’

Brian looked up at his wife and said “Well, I’m not keeping a bastard child in my house and left the room.’ “You can’t have her adopted; she ours; your daughters flesh and blood Brian.’

“She’s no child of mine; he said as he walked away.’

The sister approached Brian Reid and asked him to sign the death certificate.’

“Your daughter’s body will be sent to the chapel of rest at Turnbull and Sons where no doubt you will be able to take care of the funeral arrangements.’

“Thank you sister said Brian as he signed the death certificate and a copy was given to him. “Do you wish to take your grand daughter home with you Mr Reid; I suggest that she stays here for a day or two then you can bring her home if you wish.’

“We won’t be taking her home sister my wife and I will be putting the child up for adoption.’

“I see said the sister; then if you can just wait here I will go and get the adoption forms that need to be filled in.’

Alice looked at her husband with hatred in her eyes as she stood and watched him sign the papers. “Does the child have a name asked Sister Hannah Thewlis?

“No said Brian;

“Yes she has said Alice interrupting her husband. My daughter wanted to call her Dawn.’

“It’s a lovely name for a beautiful child.’

“Where it said father, Brian wrote unknown

The name Dawn Reid was added to the form and Brian signed it.

He thanked the sister then walked towards the exit; Alice followed him outside.

“I don’t know how you can be so cold and callous Brian that is our grand daughter who you just gave away.’ Heather will never forgive you for this and neither will I.’

Bill was till waiting for them in the car and Brian explained that his daughter had died.

“Can I see the death certificate Brian; it’s for our records, you understand don’t you.’

Brian nodded then showed him the certificate.

Bill opened it where he read: CERTIFIED COPY OF A ENTRY OF DEATH PERSUANT TO THE BIRTHS AND DEATHS REGISTRATION ACT 1953

Underneath was his daughters name then the cause of death which just said Childbirth.
