Breaking the chain

Heather Reid a sixteen year old girl is found collapsed in Howdon - she has run away from her home on West Percy road North Shields, because she is pregnant. She is taken to Willington Quay Maternity hospital where upon she gives birth to a baby Girl that she names Dawn because the dawn was breaking when she was giving birth. After complications set in Heather dies of Toxaemia and her father will not bring up a bastard child. Dawn is adopted by two university lecturers - follow her story as her real father seeks her out and a court battle ensues. this is a tragic story that will have you reading until the end.

They were drinking a cup of tea from a pot that the woman had brought over when there was a tap on Jims shoulder.’

“I see you found her then.’

Jim turned around to see Irene staring at Dawn.’

“Hi Irene; what are you doing here?’

“I work here now; been here nion two year gone last September.’

“Dawn this is Irene who was a very good friend of your mother.’

“Pleased to meet you Irene; Please have a seat there is so many questions I have to ask I don’ know where to begin.’

“What would you like to know love?’

“Everything really Irene.’

“Well Heather and me first met at infant school; she was always the clever one and I hung around with her because she helped me and Sally her other friend out.’

Then we used to play out at night in the street because I lived beside her see.’

“Do you still live on West Percy Road?’

“Yes; I will never move away from North Shields; it’s my home good or bad.’

“Are my Grand Parents still alive?’

“Yes have you not met them yet?’

“No; I haven’t but I’d like to.’

“I can take you if you’d like?’

“Would you Irene; I would like that very much.’

“I finish here at twelve o’clock if you wait I will take you around to the house.’

“I don’t expect I will be welcome said Jim so I will drop you off on Silkey’s Lane then come back for you in an hour alright Dawn.’

“Yes Jim that will be fine.’

They finished their tea then told Irene that they would pick her up in an hour as they were going for a walk along the fish quay sands first.

Dawn and Jim put back their sun glasses on and Jim his white pork pie hat.’

They strolled along the sands Dawn taking pictures of her father as he picked up pebbles and skimmed them of the surface of the water. She took one of him sitting on the steps of Lloyds Jetty and another of him scrambling over the rocks at the “Black Midden’s’

They walked along to Collingwood’s monument then turned and walked back to the car.

They pulled up outside the Seaman’s Mission at just after twelve and Irene came out and got into the back seat of the car.’

“Very posh I must say Jim; well seeing you’ve gone up in the world.’

Jim didn’t say anything he just pulled away and turned up Tanners Bank and onto Saville Street.

“This is fast isn’t it said Irene I bet your wife likes it?’

“I’m not married Irene.’

“Oh so I’ve still got a chance then.’

“I’m living with someone on the Broadway.’

“I might have guessed someone would get their claws into you.’

“She’s really nice; she’s Italian and her father owns the restaurant chain Ilforno’s.

Money always goes to money doesn’t it?’
