“What do you mean doctor?’

“Mr Gales has terminal cancer of the liver which has spread to other organs in his body.’

“But my dad is only 35 years old how can this be?’

“The alcohol abuse hasn’t helped but he may have drunk to kill the pain that he’s obviously been suffering.’

“Can you operate; I mean I don’t care how much it costs just do something.’

Your father’s cancer is too advanced Miss Gales plus even if he was; he is not strong enough to withstand extensive surgery.’

“How long has he got?’

“A few days maybe less; I’m very sorry.’ We will of course make him as comfortable as possible.’

Dawn held Rosina who was now crying.’

They sat down in the waiting room and Dawn brought them both a cup of coffee.’

“I will ring Travis and my father if that’s alright.’

“Of course you do what you have to do I will see if they will let me see your father.’

Dawn found the phone box in the corridor then dialled the number to tell Travis who told her he would be with her soon. Then she rang Gordon to tell him.’

“I’m so sorry darling is there anything that we can do?’

“It’s alright dad I have taken care of everything.’

“Where are you staying?’ well here for now but we will find a hotel nearby in case we are called.’

“Alright Dawn ring me anytime if you need me.’

“Thanks dad bye.’

“Dawn hung up the phone then rang Mick Garrity to tell him; he said that he would pass the message on to Paul King. He thanked her for letting him know.’

Dawn hurried back to the private ward where her father was. There were wires and tubes attached to him as he wasn’t breathing on his own.’

All night both Dawn and Rosina sat with her father they talked to him as if he were awake. They both hoped that he would regain consciousness so they could at least say goodbye.’

By nine o’clock they were exhausted and Dawn suggested that they find a hotel and have a shower and grab an hour’s rest. Travis arrived after he had paid for a taxi to bring him down and Dawn told him to phone the York Marriot Hotel if there was any change.’

They had both packed an overnight bag with a change of clothing and toiletries before leaving when Dawn rang to tell her that she was going to get her father into hospital.’

Dawn booked the room then they signed in under Rosina’s maiden name to avoid publicity.’

They quickly showered in the adjoining rooms then changed into some clean clothes.’

Dawn told Rosina that they must eat something because they could be at the hospital a long time and they wouldn’t get the chance to eat.

They both went to the restaurant and helped themselves to the food from the counter.

They sat and drank two cups of coffee with some bacon and scrambled eggs. Dawn picked up two bottles of water and a yogurt each with two plastic spoons on their way out. Dawn drove back to the hospital and parked up. There were looks from nursing staff as they both got out of the Ferrari.’
