*FLASHBACK* (this will actually be pretty long
Ashton's POV (only for FB)
Where could they be? I bought them here... 1 year ago that is. May-
"Ashton?" A curious voice behind me spoke.
I froze, but managed to recompose myself and turn around. It was the girl from my French class. Hélène, well her French name. That's all I know.
"Why are you in this section?" She then chuckled softly, "I didn't think you would work with these things." she said letting her eyes rake through some heavy tools.
"Uh, I-I uh..."
Her mocha eyes looked at me questionably, her head tilted to the side as if trying to depict the problem.
"Is everything ok?"
For some strange reason, I felt annoyance and anger race through my veins. Why does she all the sudden come and shoot me with questions about what I'm buying? This is none of her business.
"Yes. Now, can you leave me alone?" I asked with clenched fists.
My anger cooled down and my face soften when I saw some sort of fear surge in her eyes.
I sighed, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."
"I-it's okay. I shouldn't be nosy anyway. It's none of my business what you buy. I just- I don't know, I just wanted to say hi, ugh, I don't know."
A chuckle escaped my lips, which surprised me. But she looked so nervous and flushed, it made her look adorable.
"It's fine. But why the sudden urge to talk me?"
"Well, I mean, you seem like someone interesting. I'd like to talk more with you. But I think that's too late."
"Too late? Why?"
"You see, I'm moving."
For some odd reason, I felt some kind of sadness, I just met this girl personally. Maybe because I just thought I could've finally had a friend.
"England. My mum found a decent job there."
"I'd like to go to England one day."
"Really?" Her eyes widen with excitement.
I looked at her kind of weirdly, "Yeaah?. Why do you have that face?"
"What if I said you could come?"
What? Is she crazy? I just met her! I mean I know her through school but, for all I know this is a prank. Or maybe she's secretly a murderer.
"Um, that'd be cool but that's impossible."
"Actually it's not." she said with a lope sided smile.
"Nope. Here, wanna go to McDonald's? Its not too late. Only 6:30. We can talk. " She said with a sweet smile.
I took a quick glance at the isle I was in then at the brunette who held hopeful eyes.
"Ok, let's go."
"I'll be back." she pushed her chair back causing a horrifying screech as she went to get the food. My mum must be worried, I took my phone out and texted her. Lately, my mum has been acting kind of off. In a good way, which wasn't usual. This week, she had a week off with her afternoon job and she's been going out. A black pick up truck with black tinted windows would come and pick her up around 12 and wouldn't come back until 4. It's a Saturday which is the only days she has off.
My thoughts were interrupted when I inhaled the smell of fries.
"Sorry. I asked the lady for extra mayo, and she only gave me 2! I swear they act like if it's theirs or something." The girl in front of me said shaking her head in disbelief.
An amused grin was on my face, "I don't like mayo."
An involuntary gasp left her lips, "What?"
I couldn't help it. I let out a giggle, "I don't like mayo."
A smile tugged at her lips, damn it, why did I have to giggle?
"Well. I don't like Vegemite." She said with a satisfied look on her face.
The smile I once held drained from my face. How can one not like Vegemite? I was taken back when she threw her head back and laughed.
"Your expression! It changed so quickly!" She clutched her stomach, we were already gaining unwanted attention from strangers.
Once again, a giggle escaped, soon enough I was laughing with her.
"Ok, ok. I'm done. Ok. I'm sorry." she said trying to recompose herself. She exhaled and inhaled, me copying her actions.
"So anyway, about what we came here for."
"Right, before we start. God this is embarrassing. What's your name?" I asked timidly.
She chuckled, "Scarlett"
Right! Scarlett, how could I forget?
"So um, my mom found a job in England. All of us were going to go, that is until my dad left." her voice suddenly going quiet.
"Yeah... did yours leave?"
"When I was ten." I responded
"Oh... well my dad was actually cheating on my mom with 3 other women. He got one of them pregnant. My mom found out they got in an argument. They're currently in terms of divorce."
I wanted to say, "i'm sorry" but I know she wouldn't want to hear that."
"You seem like a strong girl someone who can walk through those obstacles." My voice coming out softer than expected.
"I mean, yeah, but... it just makes me think back. And I know I shouldn't think about the past now. It's just hurts you know?"
"I know exactly how you feel, but how does this connect with the trip?"
"Well, we had a ticket for my dad. But he's not going anymore. Cal, my brother, wanted his best friend Michael to come, but his mom didn't let him."
"I don't know. I barely know you, for all I know you could be a murderer!"
She gave me. "really?" Look, "I don't even look like one."
"You never know. The ones who look innocent aren't really."
She playfully batted her long thick eyelashes at me, "But I'm a good girl."
I smirked, "mmm, sure. When exactly is this trip?"
"Well my mom planned ahead. To early might I say. It's in 6 months or so."
"I'll talk with my mum." I answered hesitantly.
"Cool. During that time, I'd like to get to know you more. If that's ok with you, of course."
I grinned, "No problem."
"Honey! You're home finally! Where were you?"
"I met someone." I replied trying to avoid talking more about it.
"How's that person like?" She asked raising her right eyebrow.
"Well, she's really n-"
"It's a girl!"
"Yeah, and I have to tell you something." Nervously, I scratched my neck.
"Me too." she looked serious now.
"Well, honey, I met someone."
I stood still when those words came out of my mums lips.
"Does he treat you right mum? Because if he doesn't I swear-"
"He treats me like a princess."
"Mmm, when will I get to meet him?"
This is so sudden. I didn't even have enough time to process!
"Yes, he's here."
"Bye, and thank you." I shook his hand firmly to finally closing the door.
"He's a good man mum. You got yourself a good one." I said as I hugged her.
I felt her smile against my chest, "I know. I kind of hid this from you, but he ... he proposed."
Weirdly, I wasn't upset or against it. He was a good man for my mom. He treated mum and Lauren good.
"I'm happy for you mum."
She pulled away from my embrace and looked at me straight into my eyes with eyes in the verge of crying.
"Ash, I'm so grateful to God that he gave me a son like you. You've helped me so much, with my own feelings and with your sister. I couldn't ask for a better son. I love you honey." tears rushed down her cheeks, pulling me in a tighter embrace again.
We settled down on the couch, finally calm.
"Earlier you told me you had something to tell me?" Mum spoke, getting a tissue near the lamp.
"So this girl, Scarlett from my school is going to England. "
"Mmm... I think I know where this is heading to."
"And she kind of invited me..."
"I knew it. Look honey do you want to go?"
"Yeah I think so."
"Yes or no, Ashton."
Before I knew I said, "Yes."
"Ok, you have my permission to go."
My eyes widen, "What really?"
"Hon, you deserve it. You need to live. Plus I know you've always wanted to go there. Go study there. You have better chances. But don't forget about us." she said pointing a finger at me.
I chuckled, "I know mum, and thank you."
"Yeah?!" I called out from the bathroom. I rinsed my hands.
"Yes?" I asked again, but I got no response, "Scar?"
I unlocked the door and saw Scarlett with my razor in her hand.
"A-Ashton. Why do you have this here? Why is there blood stains inside your cabinet?"
Tears threaten to fall from my eyes, I felt like I've disappointed her.
Suddenly, I felt her small frame against me. Her arms wrapped around me as she cried into my chest.
"Why Ash? No, don't answer that. I understand."
I held her close as I wiped my already existent tears, "Y-you d-do?"
"You've gone through so much. It's hard to cope with it. But cutting won't help the situation for any better. Cutting is like a drug you get addicted to it. And cutting isn't any better than drugs, Ash." Her voice coming out muffled.
"I know, I try. I try so hard to stop."
"You can do it Ash, and I'll help you."
I felt her smile against my chest, "You'll see."
"Oh my god Calum, you're such a dork!" I laughed at Calum who was currently making a fool out of himself.
We are at the airport. 6 months have passed by quick. My mum wanted me to be there for her marriage so they did it a month ago. And now today's the day we go to England. Start a new life, a better life. I've been clean for the past 3 months. And you know what? I actually feel good. For once in my life I feel like I've accomplished something. Which is unusual for someone like me. I already said my goodbyes to my mum and Lauren. Now I was boarding the plane, ready to go and start all over again.
So this was just in insight on how Scarlett befriended Ash. Anyway I just want to rant about this guy. So on the last day of school, I was heading out to go to lunch. He was at the door and said, "after you." I smiled as a sign of thank, but CLEARLY he didn't get it and said, Do you even speak anymore?" Like honestly I hate when people say this to me. Like "why don't you ever speak?" Or "Why are you so quiet?" I'm shy, what can I do? It annoys me so much. Anyhow, sorry guys I just had to get it out. I hope you guys are enjoying this book!
