Marauder's Youth

Bonnie Spurlock finds herself at Hogwarts once more for her fourth year and was loving every second of it. Hogwarts was her home; her family were at Hogwarts and everyone treated her like a normal person. It was amazing. She had amazing friends from across the school, some from her house, Gryffindor and some from Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. She was a quiet girl with a passion for books, moss green eyes, warm brown hair, a thick Scottish accent and a very large secret that only she and two others knew about. That is until she gets thrown into a world of adventure and undiscovered magic with one of her best friends thanks to the Triwizard Tournament.

6. SIX

"Imagine if you two get picked!" James blurted before he shoved a spoonful of sugar covered cereal into his mouth. "We'd be without our best mate for months."

"It would be a good experience though," Remus concluded, "You'd get to spend a few months in one of the best wizarding school in the world."

"Very true." Sirius nodded. "Plus I would kick arse in every challenge that gets thrown at me."

"You'd end up sobbing if a piece of Gillyweed touched your toe." Bonnie crinkled her nose and snorted.

Sirius jutted out his lip, "I would not." He moaned.

"Yes you would." Peter started laughing hysterically, "I can imagine you screaming like a little first year girl if something weird even came within five feet of you."

"Shut up Peter." Sirius rolled his eyes and reached over to his right ruffle Peter's hair.

"Have you got any plans on telling your mother of your little adventure?" Lily's voice croaked as she swallowed a spoonful of cereal.

"Not unless I get picked no..." Bonnie's head tilted to the side, "Are you okay. You don't sound like you're feeling very good?"

"Just a sore throat. It'll be gone in no time." Lily wiped her forehead on the back of her hand. "It's not the first time I've had one, I think I'll survive."

"Hmm still... I would still go see Madam Pomfrey." Bonnie hummed, "You look a little green."

"Don't try and change the subject." Lily swatted Bonnie's knee in annoyance.

Bonnie shrugged, "You can't blame a girl for trying."

"It's the seventies! Live a little!" Lily swung her arms up in the air meekly.

"So what's your plans for today?" Remus tilted his head to the side.

Bonnie tilted her head too, "I'm going to the library. Professor McGonagall gave me some extra homework."

"Extra homework?! Are you mad?" Peter's face paled, "Especially for that old witch."

Sirius looked at him; disgusted by what Peter had just said so he smacked him over the head with the palm of his hand.

The fork in Peter's hand went flying half way down the table as he grabbed the back of his head, "Ow! Why'd you do that? You IDIOT!"

"Don't you dare insult that woman you know what she's done for Remus." Sirius pushed himself backwards and swung his legs over the bench so he could leave. "I'll see you guys later."

Everyone turned to watch Sirius storm off through the Great Hall doors and into the corridor until he was no longer in their view.

"What bit his arse?" Lily sniffled.

James rolled his eyes, "Nothing, he's just having his daily strop."

Bonnie pushed herself away from the table, "Welp, it was great chatting to you all but I'm going to the library."

"I think I'll join you." Remus smiled and got up from the table. "I have some reading to do."

"Okay, we'll be in the library if you need us." Bonnie nodded to them. "Lily, go lay down or something, you need to rest because I really don't want your disease during the night or something."

She rolled her eyes, "I will, I think I'll go see Severus first." Lily pulled her hair away from her face and wiped her forehead.

"Snivellus Snape." James snorted, "What. A. Prick."

"Shut up James." Lily pushed herself upwards aggressively so she was standing, only slightly taller than the rest of them sitting, "He's one of my best friends."

"Well where's he been? You seem to have been with us an awful lot Evans. I haven't seen the greasy haired git anywhere near you since we got back. Have you two finally broke up?"

"I swear to Merlin James, just as I was beginning to think that you became a decent human being over the summer you go and spit in my face." Lily spun around and began to walk away. "I'll see you later Bonnie, if you need me then I'll be in bed."

Bonnie scowled at James as Lily walked out of the doors looking a lot like Sirius did just a few minutes before.

"You're an idiot James."

"What? It's true, it's just no one else would say it." He shrugged and stared at his cereal.

Bonnie just tutted in disgust and began to make her way towards the library with Remus in tow.

Their walk was silent for a short while, only the sounds of their footsteps against the stone floor were echoing off the walls until Bonnie broke the silence. "Is he serious?"

"What?" Remus looked at her confused. "If you're talking about James, just forget about it. He's just jealous because Lily actually wants to spend time with Severus."

"The rest of you don't seem to fond of him either." Bonnie tutted. "When we were on the train you made a comment about him too and the other day when Sirius and I were getting those toads for Professor Slughorn he saw Severus in a different class and even then he made a comment about him. He's a really nice person and I don't know what he's done to deserve it if I'm honest."

Remus flinched, "I don't need you lecturing me. I get enough of it from teachers thank you very much."

"Well maybe you need the lectures. I am struggling to see why you four bully the boy."

"We don't bully him!" Remus defended his friends and his actions.

"You do Remus and I don't know how you, of all people, don't know that." Bonnie began to walk faster, they were nearly at the library now and the sooner she got there, the less time she had to speak to him.

"Slow down!" Remus grabbed onto Bonnie's sleeve and tugged to get her to slow down. "I'll see what I can do. I'm not promising a miracle though Bonnie."

"Thank you. I'd appreciate that." Bonnie huffed, "Now,come on, I have studying to do."

The pair shuffled into the library, their conversation hushed by the new librarian Madam Pince who had decided that a whisper was too loud for her eerily silent library.

"What is you're looking for?" Remus ran his finger along the spines of the books that were lined on the shelves creating a clean line where the dust once was.

Bonnie hummed in response until she finally reached a book bound in thick black leather with silver stitching decorating the borders. "This."

"What is 'this'?" Remus tried to peer over her shoulder to get a look at the title but it was no good, it had none. Bonnie quickly pulled the book tighter to her chest so no one else could see what she was planning on reading.

"You go find what you need and I'll find us a table." Bonnie scurried off into one of the corners of the library leaving Remus behind in a cloud of her dust and surrounded by people’s adventures and knowledge trapped in the yellowing paper.

He huffed and continued his way down the rows of books until he too found what he was looking for. It was a book on Werewolves.

Bonnie scanned the pages covered in pictures of people transforming into their Animagus.

A boy turning into a fox. An old lady turning into an eagle.
Bonnie stared intensely at the page, trying to soak in everything that she could. Her eyes wandered lazily over the pictures as her fingers traced their faces. This wasn’t what she was looking for. These people could only change into one animal. She needed help. Bonnie placed her elbows on the table and grabbed her hair with her hands as she stared into the different patterns embedded into the table.
“Are you okay?” Remus whispered as he sat down. He looked at the book she was reading and saw a picture of half an older man and half a black bear. “Why are you reading about Anamagi?”
Bonnie shrugged, “I have to write a paper on them for McGonagall. However, it’s not what I’m looking for.” She lied.
“What are you looking for?”
Bonnie shrugged. “I have no idea.” She stared up at Remus to see him staring at her like she stared at the book, soaking up all over features, every last freckle. “Do you ever feel like you don’t belong? Like you’re odd but not in a good way?”
“More than you can imagine.” Remus chortled. “Why do you ask?”
“Just something that’s been playing on my mind recently.” Bonnie ran her hands through her hair.
Remus stretched over the table and took her hand in his, “I’m here for you Bonnie. You’re my friend now whether you like it or not and if you want to tell me anything I’m here.”
Bonnie tilted her head to the side and smiled and she squeezed his hand gently, “Thank you Remus I really appreciate it.”
“It’s okay.” Remus rubbed the back of her hand in circles with his thumb.
“Do you mind if I go actually? I have to ask Professor McGonagall a question. It’s urgent.”
“No, it’s okay. Do you want me to come with you?”
Bonnie slid her hand out of Remus’s, “I need to ask alone. Thank you for offering though.”
“I’ll see you later in the common room?” Remus twisted around so he could watch her walk away.
Bonnie looked back and nodded, “Of course.”
Remus waved slowly as she turned back around and walked straight out of the library, leaving a cold sensation over Remus.
“Hi Remus.” A voice whispered from above him. As he looked up he was greeted with the smiling face of Alice. “Is this seat taken?” She pointed at the seat where Bonnie once sat.
“Nope, it’s free.” Remus smiled as he watched Alice sit in front of him. “What are you reading?”
“Just a book about how to become an Auror. What are you reading?” Alice cocked her head to see the front of his book.
“Just a book about werewolves, it’s for DA class.” Remus shrugged and covered the book with his arms. “So, you want to become an Auror?”

Bonnie sped walked down the corridors of Hogwarts trying not to let tears spill from her eyes until she reached the door with the wooden box. She reached up and traced the opening gently with her fingers as she remembered the previous night and how much fun she had had with Sirius. Bonnie balled her fist and knocked on the teacher’s door with one hand as she wiped her face with the other.

“Come in!”
Bonnie pushed opened the door to see Professor McGonagall surrounded by stacks of paper and quills and empty jars of ink.
Professor McGonagall looked up at the teary-eyed girl and stood up, “Have a seat Ms Spurlock.”
Bonnie hung her head and wrapped her arms around herself until she sat down in the chair in front of Professor McGonagall’s desk where one tear fell down her cheek and into her lap.
“I have a question Professor but I'm afraid there may be something wrong with me but please don't expel me from-”

McGonagall laughed, "Expel you? Ms Spurlock, why on earth would I have you expelled?"
"Because I have a secret and I'm not sure what it is or why I have it but I'm pretty sure that it's not normal and it isn't a good thing."
"Miss Spurlock if you would tell me what it is then I could help you with your issue and let it be made clear you will not be expelled from Hogwarts because of it."
Bonnie breathed in deeply and sighed, "Well ever since I was young I've had this 'gift' that came along with my magic which me nor my mother could understand. I can - I'm not quite sure how to explain it."
Professor McGonagall raised an eyebrow over her oval glasses, "A gift? Is it something you could show me."
Bonnie bit her lip, "Mother said to never show anyone because she's afraid they'll think I'm a freak. She already thinks so because of my magic."
"Well." McGonagall tutted, "I can ensure you that you are nothing of the sorts. Now Ms Spurlock, I would like you to show me this gift of yours."
Bonnie nodded, gingerly as she looked at Professor McGonagall, her face slowly morphing into that of a fox, her nose stretched into a snout, he teeth became short and sharp, her eyes became golden and her body slowly shrunk so she was sitting on the chair covered in orange hair and had four paws. She then began to shrink further until she was a small brown mouse and then to a shocking green and red parrot and then back to her human self. "See." She whispered. "I am a freak." Tears began to fall quicker now as she stared at her lap. "I need your help Professor. I don't know what I am."
Professor McGonagall stared warmly at the girl in front of her, "I think you need to come with me Bonnie. Professor Dumbledore needs to see this."
"What? Why?" Bonnie became panicked before Professor McGonagall placed her hand on her shoulder. "Am I in trouble?"
"Far from it my dear."
