I helped Mr. and Mrs. Winston the table. The door opened and Claire walked in.
"Thank you again for letting me stay here. You don't know how much it means to me." I said.
"Don't mention it, dear." Mrs. Winston smiled.
"Marcus, you're such a goody-goody." Claire smirked.
"Now, Claire, he's just polite." Mrs. Winston said.
I sat at the table.
"You're so lucky you're my best friend." Claire laughed.
Mr. and Mrs. Winston sat down at the table as well.
"Dig in, everyone." Mr. Winston laughed.
As we ate, Mr. Winston looked at me.
"So, Marcus, if you don't mind me asking, what exactly happened?"
"Well, as you know, my parents were photographers. They went all over the world. I always stayed home because I wasn't a big fan of long trips. I was usually alone for a week or two at a time. Anyways, while they were in Paris, a mad man started shooting everybody. Mom and Dad didn't make it."
"Don't you have any other family, though?" Mrs. Winston asked.
"Well, you are welcome to stay here as long as you want."
The doorbell chimed.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you, I'm going out with Jackson tonight." Claire said.
"Claire, you waited until the last minute! Anyways, we have a guest."
"No, no, it's okay. I have to unpack anyways." I said.
"Nonsense! Claire, can Marcus come along?" Mrs. Winston asked.
"I don't see why not."
"No, it's fine. I swear."
"Marcus, you need some cheering up. Now go get your jacket." Mr. Winston said.
I nodded and put on my jacket.
"We'll be back around 10." Claire said and I followed her out of the front door.
We all walked to the park. I walked behind with my hands in my pockets. Ahead, they were laughing and kissing. When we got to the park, Claire and Jackson sat on a bench and started making out. I looked around to see all the swings empty. I sat down and pulled out my phone. My phone had eBooks that I could read any time.
Sandra was always a shy person, even when we've been friends for a year. She rarely talked when she was uncomfortable, and she was always afraid of confrontation.
I heard moaning from the park bench and saw Jackson kissing Claire's neck. I sighed and looked back at my book. At 10, I put my phone away and walked towards the bench. Claire and Jackson walked out from behind a tree. Their clothes were backwards.
I sighed and walked over to them.
"Hey, uh, it's 10." I said.
"Twenty more minutes." Claire sighed.
"Your mom is expecting us to be home right now. We have to go." I said.
"Dammit Marcus! Why do you always have to be such a buzzkill?" Claire growled.
"Okay, well, uh... bye." I sighed and walked to the house.
As soon as I walked through the door, Mr. and Mrs. Winston were waiting.
"Where is Claire?" They asked.
"She'll be home in twenty minutes. She wanted alone time with Jackson."
I went to the guest room to unpack.
