He will fight, not only the undiscovered virus, but also himself; from the mental struggles of losing his friends and family, to having to do the morally wrong, and going against all the things that was taught to him as important. But in the middle of an apocalypse, nothing matters but survival.

7. Chapter 7

Our ride back was quiet; I don’t blame anyone for being mad at me.  Even though Nathan said it wasn’t my fault, it was I was responsible for where my bullets went, and I didn’t have control of my gun.  I will have to live with the image of the kid with a hole, I put, in his head.  I guess it’s something I will have to get used too.

When we got back, there where people running at us, treating us like heroes.  They didn’t know that the vehicle has one less passenger then when it left.  They didn’t even notice when we got out.  But they are soon to find out.  I didn’t say nothing to anyone, I walked straight to my living quarters.

Outside Nathan was telling the leader of this establishment what happened.  He left out no details, he said about how I ran into the crowd of freaks, and how the other kid was getting attacked when I did.  Nathan said I did the kid a favor, because, the he had an open flesh wound, a freak bit him.

After a while, this leader came in and thanked me.  I didn’t need thanked; I did something punishable by death.  That is when the leader told me that the kid had been bit, and from the testing they do at their facility, they determined that a bite will transfer the virus.  This virus was a mutant virus of mad cow disease.

When a cow contracts that disease, they turn on the other cows.  They attack and eat the others.  They are either killed by their owner, or it spreads, and spreads.  The cow will eventually die from spinal deterioration.

This is the same thing only in a human form, and it spreads allot faster.  This will be over in a few years, if the freaks spines deteriorate.  But the problem is; humans adapt, they grow stronger, and eventually won’t die from it, they will just spread it.

So maybe I did this place a favor, who knows that guy could have started to go rouge inside the fence and killed everyone.  I shouldn’t be so hard on myself.  Now when the mental image of the kid comes into my head, I’ll think, I saved hundreds of people.

Later that day I went to meet with this overseer, the leader.  She welcomed me into her office, which was just a room with a desk in it.  She asked me where I was from, how I got there, and how many people I was with.  I answered these questions strategically, I didn’t want to upset her.  I told her about Gabe, and Michel, and Hunter.  The people I missed so desperately.

“When will I be able to see them again?” I asked, she told me that if I wanted, I could go get them and bring them to the camp.  Immediately I was in agreement with the idea, but would they come with me.  I guess I’ll figure out when I get to my childhood home.
