The Opposite of Attraction

Ever since grade four Damon and Sophia have been sworn enemies.

Now it's senior year and they're still throwing insult after insult at each other. Everyone knows that when they're in the same room all hell will break loose. Even the teachers knew not to put them in the same class.

Well at least all but one. Mr. Willis being the crazy teacher he is purposely choose these two to be in the same class. Everyone said that them being in the same room for a year would be a disaster waiting to happen.

What they all didn't expect was for Damon and Sophia to grow closer than ever.

6. 6

I was the talk of the school.

Well, not just me - Dylan was also the talk of the school.

This morning Dylan surprised me by showing up at my house and insisting on taking me to school.

I, of course, accepted his offer.

As soon as I got out of his car the rumours started flowing. Stuff like we were dating, or I was his new play toy, which didn't make sense because Dylan wasn't a player.

They weren't far from being wrong about us dating. Dylan and I did go on a date, but we were not officially dating yet.

And to make matters worse, as Dylan and I were walking into the school he decided to hold my hand. That didn't help stop the rumours.

But I didn't care what others were saying about Dylan and I. If anything, I was happy. I had always wanted to be his girlfriend, so being thought of as that by pretty much the whole school was kinda cool.

We went to lunch, and Dylan sat right beside me. He chose me over Damon. Take that Damon!

I shot smug smiles over to Damon's table whenever he was looking, which was more often than not.

"So everyone's been wondering...are you two dating?" Garrett asked, always the one to ask the questions no one else would.

Everyone at the table instantly perked up and gave us their full attention.

I was about to say "no", but Dylan spoke first.

"Yea." he answered.

It took me a second to realize what he said. My eyes widened in shock and confusion as I snapped my head in his direction.

"We are?" I whispered so only he could hear.

"Sure. We've been on a date and kissed. Its okay that I said we're dating, right?" he said.

I nodded slowly, still slightly confused.

He put his arm around me and leaned down, giving me a quick peck on the lips.

"I'm glad you're my girlfriend." he told me.

By now the whole cafeteria was looking at us in shock. They probably all saw the kiss.

I guess the rumour was confirmed.

I felt someone burning holes in the side of my head so I turned to see who was staring at me.

Damon was the culprit, shooting the deadliest glare he could muster up at Dylan and I.

Okay, that was odd. Why was he so mad?

After lunch I stopped off at my locker to grab some books. Dylan tried to come with me but I told him to go ahead because I didn't want him to be late.

Just as I was about to close my locker a hand came out from behind me and slammed it shut rather roughly.

I spun around and came face to chest with a very angry Damon.

"I tell you to stay away from Dylan, and what do you do? You become his girlfriend! What the hell?" Damon hissed.

I rolled my eyes. "When do I ever listen to you?" I asked rhetorically.

"That's not the point. I know that you're only dating him for popularity." he accused, fire and determination in his eyes.

"For your information, I actually like Dylan, a lot. In fact I've liked him since grade four, not that it's any of your business." I shot back.

Where did this kid come up with his theories?

"I swear to God, if you're lying and end up hurting Dylan, I'll make your life a living hell." Damon threatened, his eyes burning with sincerity.

Again I rolled my eyes. "You already do that." I told him.

"Try me. This is nothing compared to what I could do." he growled.

"I've been through a lot worse than anything you could possibly do." I told him quietly. It was sad how true that statement was.

His face scrunched in confusion.

I took this as an opportunity to get away from him. So I started running down the hall to my next class so I wouldn't be late.

Today in Environmental Awareness class, Damon didn't seem mad at all - he just ignored me the whole time, which I was more than grateful for. So why did he get so mad just then?

What was his problem?

- - - - - -

I was at home sitting in my room when a thought hit me. I had to start my Environmental Awareness project with Damon today.

Mr. Willis gave us all the location to either pick up our tree if it was small like ours, or go visit it.

I groaned, knowing I would have to spend time with Damon, which especially sucked since he was in such a sour mood.

But I had to get a good grade, so I pulled myself off my bed and made my way over to Damon's house.

I stopped at his front door, hesitating.

You can do this Sophia. I tried to reassure myself but it didn't work.

Just knock on the goddam door already! You need a good grade!

Ok here I go, knocking on the door like a boss.

Do it for the grade I chanted over and over.

After a few seconds the door swung open revealing Damon's mom.

"Oh dear, what did he do this time?" she asked, her voice annoyed, but the annoyance was directed at her son, not me.

"Don't worry Mrs. Blake, he didn't do anything this time. We have a project to do together." I told her, laughing slightly.

Her eyes grew wide in disbelief.

"Oh my! Why would a teacher do such a horrible thing!" she exclaimed.

If anyone knew just how much Damon and I hated each other it was Mrs. Blake.

"I don't know. To be honest, I think he's a little coo coo." I told her, causing her to laugh.

The only thing I liked about Damon was his mom. She absolutely adored me. And on top of that she helped me prank him sometimes. Best enemy's mom ever!

"Well Damon is up in his room, so go on up and get him so you two can do your project." Mrs. Blake instructed.

"Yes sir." I said teasingly, giving her a mock salute.

As I made my way upstairs I heard her laughing. I guess I am pretty funny aren't I?

I got to Damon's room and didn't even bother to knock. I just barged in. Thankfully he was fully dressed. Usually in all those movies and books if a girl barges into a boy's room, he wouldn't have a shirt on or something.

"What the hell are you doing here?!" he shouted.

"Calm your man tits. We need to pick up our tree." I told him.

"Shit." he muttered under his breath.

"Can't you just go and get it yourself?" he asked.

Wow. Lazy much?

"Mr. Willis is expecting both of us. Didn't you hear him say that during class?"

He shook his head no.

God this guy was so stupid! How was I going to pass this project if this kid wouldn't even listen?

"Well lets go then, I'm driving." he said, twirling his car keys around his finger as he walked out his bedroom door.

"Ew. I don't want to ride in that cheap thing!" I complained, following after him.

He turned around and glared, so I glared back.

We were having a glare off as we walked down the hallway - bad idea on Damon's part.

Just as I was about to break my glare Damon bumped into a wall and fell on the ground.

I burst into a fit of hysteria. That was just too good! I won our glare off AND got to see Damon fall.

"Wow you look into my eyes for two minutes and you're already falling for me?" I teased.

"Wha- no! It wasn't like that!" he exclaimed.

"You're getting rather defensive. Is that because I'm right?" I teased some more.

"You wish. No one could ever love you." he growled.

My teasing smile instantly dropped as memories flashed through my mind. Memories of him.

"You ungrateful bitch. You betrayed me. You're a horrible, disgusting excuse of a human being. No one could ever love you." He screamed, punching me multiple times.

"Uh, Sophia?" Damon said, waving his hand in front of my face.

I shook my head, trying to get rid of those horrible memories. That was all in the past, I didn't have to ever see him again.

"Can we go now?" Damon asked, clearly annoyed.

I nodded and started walking after him. I didn't trust my voice right now.

I quietly got in the car without complaining, much to Damon's surprise, but he didn't comment, and I was grateful for that.

The car ride passed by in a blur. I didn't even remember the twenty minutes it took to get to the place where we would pick up our tree.

I absentmindedly got out of the car and again followed Damon. I was too engrossed in the memories to pay attention to everything going on around me.

"What's up with you? Usually you would be complaining about anything and everything." Damon asked.

I just shrugged.

Damon let out an annoyed breath but let it go.

We found Mr. Willis, who apparently owned this tree place, and asked for our tree.

He excitedly gave it to us, then went on to another pair of students to help them.

Damon thrust the tree into my hands and started walking back to his car.

"You have the first tree shift. In a week it's my turn." he called over his shoulder.

I shrugged again even though he couldn't see, and followed him back to his car.

We were half way home when he spoke. "I think his name should be Antonio."

Well that was random. It even made me crack a small smile.

"Where did you get that name from?" I asked.

"And she speaks!" he muttered under his breath. I don't think I was supposed to hear that.

Then to me he answered "I had a pet hamster named Antonio once."

"What happened to him?" I asked suspiciously.

"Uh, I though he was dead and flushed him down the toilet." he replied quickly, clearly embarrassed.

"Ends up he was just sleeping." he answered.

"You want to name our tree after a hamster you drowned?" I asked in disbelief.

"Hey it was an accident! I just like the name ok?" he defended.

"Whatever. The name isn't too bad I guess." I responded, rolling my eyes.

"Yes!" he cheered, stretching out the "s".

I rolled my eyes again.

Then it hit me - we just had our first real conversation.
