Adapt and Recover

"Adapt and Recover" which tells about two boys growing up in the 1970's in which was still known as the Ridges Estate. Michael and Lizzy Fox live in Oakwood Avenue they have friends who live across the road; Connie and Bob Harris. Both of their sons Roger and Ronnie play together and go to the same school. Infact they are inseparable. This story takes you through their childhood together and their desire to be Royal Marine Commandos after Lizzy, Rogers mother buys Roger an Action man toy for Christmas. As young boys they join the Army Cadets until they reach the age of eighteen where they sign up to take on the hardest training regime in the world. see the boys grow into men as they are sent to fight in the Gulf War in 1991. This is a story of friendship and comradery. one that will last a lifetime.

The shop had deep compartments that had to be kept filled and the fruit was neatly washed and stacked to make it more attractive to the customers.

Alan Day greeted her as he came in from the market. He’d been up since five am to buy the best possible fruit and vegetables he could for the shop.

Alan gave her a nice flower patterned apron to keep her clothes clean then they set about filling up the compartments when that was done he asked if she would like to make a pot of tea. Alan had a sweet tooth and took three sugars in his pot. There was a packet of ginger snaps lying on the table and Lizzy placed two of them on a plate for Alan.

Liz told Alan about her husband who had gone to look for work.

“Well let’s hope he’s lucky then Liz.’

“Yes, we could do with some extra money coming in; you know my son is in clothes that would fit an eight year old already?

“How old is he?

“He will be five this June.’

“He’s going to be a biggun’ as they say.’

“You’re telling me he eats like a horse as well.’

“Growing boys need plenty to keep them going.’

Roger ran over the road and knocked at number 18 for his friend.’

“You are early said Ronnie as he grabbed his blazer and school cap.

The sky was grey and it looked like it was going to rain as the two boys made their way to school. Meadow Well Primary School was at the bottom of Rowan Avenue it had twelve classrooms and separate dining hall around at the back. Mrs Patricia Mason was the head mistress. She was lovely with the kids and they all loved her.

She walked around the school yard with a cup of Nescafe coffee in her hand and a crowd of children followed her around until she blew the whistle and the children automatically lined up the way they had been taught then filed off one line at a time to their classrooms.

Roger gave Mrs Lawson his dinner money after the register had been called then they set about learning to read and write. The teacher showed them how to form the letters from the top of the line to the bottom with a pencil, and then they read Janet and John books.

During the break Roger and Ronnie played in the park which as around the back of the school. There was a banana slide, a round about, and some swings to play on.

The girls were screaming as boys chased them around the park. Some played hop scotch or jumped a giant rope swung by two other girls. The boys kicked a football around or played soldiers which Roger loved. When the whistle blew they all made their way back to their class rooms. It was now
