It wasn’t her; Ron it was me.’

“You; man you had the perfect opportunity.’

“It just didn’t feel right mate and she felt the same.’

“How do you know that?’

Because when you and Ann disappeared we talked about it.’

“Christ Roger, you are only sixteen you have got to live a little man.’

“I’m not like you Ron, I cannot just shag a bird then dump them; they have got to mean something.’

“I can understand that and one day the time will be right for you.’

They walked down to Ronnie’s path and chatted for a good half an hour then Roger said he would see him in the morning.

Roger turned the key in the door then let himself in He went into the kitchen then unpacked all of his gear. His mother had left him a note telling him that she had gone to the club with his father and that they would be home by eleven thirty. His dinner was in the oven and would only need heating through. Roger turned on the gas and lit the oven and then closed the door.

His dark green tee shirts, vests, and underwear went into the washer and he added some Ariel liquid detergent and set it away.

He washed every utensil and receptacle that he’d taken. He put away the two fold away chairs and all of his camping gear in the cupboard in the passage. Then he set about cleaning his boots. When they were gleaming he placed them in the passage. Then took out his dinner which was now hot enough to eat.

When his mother and father returned they asked how his weekend had gone.

“Well we done it Da he said. I’ve stood on the highest mountain in Britain and looked out as far as I could see. The view was absolutely breath taking mother. Wait until you see the photos. I took four rolls of film so will you take them to Boots or Asda and get them developed for me mam?’

“Of course I will son.’

“Thanks Mam; I’m off to my bed I’m tired, Goodnight.’

“Goodnight son his parents said as Roger went to his room then closed the door.

Roger didn’t bother to read, he couldn’t be bothered; all he could think about was Brenda. He had her number and he wanted to call her but then he thought better of it thinking that she needed time to think. He turned out the light and closes his eyes.

For four months Roger didn’t contact Brenda he just got his mind on training until he remembered it was her birthday. So he rang Interflora and ordered some flowers to be sent to the hairdressers along with a card.
