Ronnie nearly let the cat out of the bag by telling them that they we only sixteen. They would have been kicked out.’

Ronnie paid the barman and sat down sharpish to evade anymore questions.

The beer was going down too easy for Ronnie who was now onto his third pint.’

“Don’t forget we have a run to do tomorrow night Ron’

“Come on Roger give me a break we’ve done three days training straight off.’

“Are you going to say that if we are sent abroad? “ Sorry Sir I’ve fought a war for three days can I go home now.’

“The implications of what Roger had said hit home with the girls and they both looked at Roger then said do you mean you could both go to war straight away.’

I thought that you would be you know; sent to Malta or Gibraltar for a couple of years.’

“We can be called upon at a minutes notice Brenda; once we finish our training we are deemed to be Royal Marines and could go anywhere in the world.’

“How long would you be away then?’

“Six months I think said Ronnie.’

“Six months said Ann; that would mean I would hardly see you Ronnie.’

“Better make the most of me whilst you can then he said as he grabbed her by the hand and led her to the toilets.’

“How do you feel about that then Brenda?’

“About what?’

“That I will be abroad six months of the year with the Marines.’

“I don’t know Roger; I mean we have only been going out together a couple of weeks.’

“Well it’s best that you know what you are getting yourself into.’

Ronnie and I are going to enlist no matter what this is why I want to take things slowly Brenda; that is no disrespect to Ann but my mind is already made up.’

“I know how much this means to you Roger and I do understand. It is something that I would honestly like to think about before committing myself.’

“I like you will be seventeen in a few months time. I don’t know what I want at this moment in time.’

“I wouldn’t want you to feel tied down Brenda; we are both young and obviously want to have a bit of fun before getting married one day.’ I’m sorry I cannot be like Ronnie; I respect you too much to do what he has done.’
