Adapt and Recover

"Adapt and Recover" which tells about two boys growing up in the 1970's in which was still known as the Ridges Estate. Michael and Lizzy Fox live in Oakwood Avenue they have friends who live across the road; Connie and Bob Harris. Both of their sons Roger and Ronnie play together and go to the same school. Infact they are inseparable. This story takes you through their childhood together and their desire to be Royal Marine Commandos after Lizzy, Rogers mother buys Roger an Action man toy for Christmas. As young boys they join the Army Cadets until they reach the age of eighteen where they sign up to take on the hardest training regime in the world. see the boys grow into men as they are sent to fight in the Gulf War in 1991. This is a story of friendship and comradery. one that will last a lifetime.

“Did you do your run today?’

“Aye in aal that rain as well Mr Fox we were like drunded rats.’

“Bit of water never killed anyone.’

“Bloody pneumonia will though Michael said Lizzy as she took a sip of her tea.’

“They are two big strong lads mam Liz; they eat good food and with all that fresh fruit that you’re now bringing in; they are getting all the vitamins they need.

“You should have seen what Ronnie and I brought home this afternoon; we were like pack mules the both of us weren’t we Ron?’

“Aye that’s right.

“Ronnie and I is it; Michael laughed.’.

“No need to do any weights was there.’

“It’s all good training for you both anyway.’

Roger got up from his seat and placed his and Ronnie’s plates into the sink then picked up his bag with the books in and told his mother that he would see her later.

The bus ride to the college had them talking about the girls again and they were thinking to themselves what they would say when they both walked in tomorrow for a haircut.

“Well they wouldn’t have told us where they worked if they didn’t want us to call in would they Ron’

“Aye that’s right; never thought of it like that mate.’

“There you go then; we can go about eleven o’clock they may get time off for lunch and we can have a bit craic with them.’

“Aye,’ I wouldn’t mind a bit crack with either of them said Ronnie with a grin.’

“Trust you to lower the tone.’

“They reach their stop and got off then crossed the road to the college.

“What room we in?

“It’s down here on the right said Roger as he looked at his map of the school.’

Mrs Ellis took the class; this time there were about thirty in the group and the age rages varied.

Mrs Ellis set them a task of writing 10.000 word essays on any subject they liked.
