He was around six feet tall and was smartly dressed.

They agreed to go to the pictures the following Friday night.

The picture house always had a queue to get in at The Rex had undergone refurbishment after it was bombed during the war.

Lizzy remembered what they went to see that night; she remembered because Michael told her that he’d escaped from doing National Service because of flat feet.

Norman Wisdom was the first film on that night in Follow a Star” which the comic antics of Wisdom saw him become a singing star. Another singer Jerry Desmond in the film steals his song and tries to mime to it. The main Feature was “The 39 Steps with Kenneth More as Richard Hannay in a spy drama.

Michael wasn’t really a romantic kind of man; he didn’t go in for all the roses and chocolates but he loved Lizzy in his own kind of way. They were married in Percy St Johns in 1969 ten years after they had first met. Lizzy said that he married her after she got in the family way and didn’t want the embarrassment and the shame that it would bring to her family if they found out so they were married when she was two months gone. They moved into Oakwood Avenue on the 2nd November that year and Roger Bartlett Fox was born on the 3rd of June 1970. Roger was named after Roger Bartlett (Big X) who his father had read about in a book about an escape from a German prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. His father Nigel was none too pleased as he thought that he would have called him James after his Grand father.

Michael always did what he wanted; too hell with everyone else he would say.

He was noted for being a bit of a hard case as well, when he took on three men at work in the hull of the Esso Northumbria when they refused to pay up after a card game. Michael knocked them all out and got his money.

He was respected by all his work colleagues after that; no one gave him shit as he called it.

Lizzy His wife doted on Roger who would be their only child after complications during the birth led her to have a hysterectomy. Michael wasn’t happy as he always wanted a daughter. Lizzy reassured him saying that it was Gods will that they only had been blessed with one child.

Lizzy was only five feet two inches tall and weighed 44 kilos. Roger grew up fast and was walking before his first birthday. His mother made his clothes as a baby. By the time Roger had started school it was apparent that he was going to be tall. His hands and feet were huge for a boy and he stood nearly four feet in his bare feet. His skinny legs worried his mother and she would give him extra to eat because her brother Tom got rickets and she was afraid that he would end up the same. She remembered how the Job at the fruit shop came up after seeing the advert in the window of the shop at the bottom of Marina Avenue.

“I’ve come to buy some potatoes but I saw the advert for the job Mr Day; said the shy young woman.’
