Adapt and Recover

"Adapt and Recover" which tells about two boys growing up in the 1970's in which was still known as the Ridges Estate. Michael and Lizzy Fox live in Oakwood Avenue they have friends who live across the road; Connie and Bob Harris. Both of their sons Roger and Ronnie play together and go to the same school. Infact they are inseparable. This story takes you through their childhood together and their desire to be Royal Marine Commandos after Lizzy, Rogers mother buys Roger an Action man toy for Christmas. As young boys they join the Army Cadets until they reach the age of eighteen where they sign up to take on the hardest training regime in the world. see the boys grow into men as they are sent to fight in the Gulf War in 1991. This is a story of friendship and comradery. one that will last a lifetime.

“You aren’t going soft on me are you Ron; now that you’ve passed out we will be expected to maintain our fitness levels.’

“We are now professional soldiers don’t forget that.’

“I won’t; goodnight mate I’m bushed.’

Roger parked the car then jumped out and ran into the house.’

“Had a goodnight then asked his mother?’

“Yes mam we went to the pictures then bought a pizza before going to Tynemouth for an hour.

I’ve got to get to bed mam Ronnie and I have a ten mile yomp in the morning.’

“What time are you leaving?’

“We will be gone by the time you get up mam.’

“Goodnight then son.’

“Goodnight mam.’

Roger folded his trousers and placed them on the hanger then got his fresh kit ready for his morning run. He climbed into bed naked He was into his second psychology book but he did not pick the book up to read it. Instead he made an entry in his journal. “Ron is going off the rails a little; I will have to keep him in check or he will have lost the ground that he made up a Lympstone.’

“His mental attitude is an issue here; I will talk to him tomorrow about his drinking which is another thing that he needs to address.

September was always a cold frosty month and the car windscreen was covered in a blanked of it as he made his way over to Ronnie’s house.’

The crystallised frost crunched under his feet as his boots walked over the pavement towards Ronnie’s house.

Roger knocked quietly on the door then Ronnie appeared with his pack.

“You ready old man.’

“Who are you calling old?’

“Well we will see then wont we, come on. They placed the straps on the backpack then set off up the street. Instead of going down the “Backers Lane” Roger ran down Wallsend Road heading towards Howdon. They passed Percy Main; there was a steady climb as they made their way towards the incinerator. Crossing over the road after the roundabout Roger increased the pace. They turned left at Willington Quay then ran down the bank turning right they came to the moving
