“They hadn’t eaten or had food now for twenty six hours and some were showing physical signs of stress. They were crying now and someone came in the room and took them away. Little did they know that some had been planted to break the group down mentally? Roger and Ronnie were resilient. They were handcuffed to a metal piece of pipe and left for three hours. This test was to find out if anyone in the group would take the intuitive and try and escape. Roger was the first to move he worked the handcuffs along the pipe until he was free then removed the sack from his head.

He told Ronnie who worked himself free. The rest were reluctant to move especially when the planted members of the group were pleading for them to put on the sacks and go back to where they were.

Roger removed all the sacks then knew that there were planted members in the group they found the door and went outside and were about to make their way into the night when Sergeant Blaine told them that they had passed the test. For them it was over. They were escorted back to the base where they showered and were given hot food to eat. The rest would continue until either they tried to escape or gave up.

Nine of them gave up. They would have to either retake the whole ordeal again or quit. Only three of the nine went out the next morning to try and evade capture again.

Roger rang Brenda to tell her that both he and Ronnie had passed the next part of the test. They now only had two weeks left to complete and they would be done with the course.

In the two weeks that followed they were put through the Tarzan assault course, camouflage practice, live rifle fire at a specific target; then the water test where they had to swim through a tunnel of water holding their breath for two minutes to reach the other end. Four more candidates failed one of them was Ronnie.

He now had twenty four hours in which to do the Tarzan assault course again or he’d be out. Roger asked him what the hell he was doing.

“I just couldn’t hold my breath Roger sorry.

“Now you listen here lad and you listen well; if you think that you’ve come all this fucking way to fail me now you’re kidding me.’

“Tomorrow you had better pass or I will personally kick the living shit out of you do you here me.’

“Yes sir, said Ronnie.’

“Right get yourself showered; get plenty food and water inside you and get to bed.’

Thank you Sir; I needed that.’

Staff Sergeant Blaine had heard every word and gave a wry smile as Ronnie Harris went to the changing room.

The next morning Roger was up at five a.m. and encouraging Ronnie all the way through his retake. Ronnie passed with five minutes to spare.’
