Captain Henderson and Staff Sergeant Blaine were already picking out the recruits that they thought would fail starting on Monday when the recruits would do their first nine mile yomp with a forty pound pack strapped to their backs.

This was where they usually lost at least ten recruits.’

“If any recruit failed they would have twenty four hours in which to take the test again or they would be out.

Roger told the lads that they must consume at least three thousand calories at breakfast in order to have the energy to complete the job. They had to make sure that they also took onboard enough water to keep them hydrated. Failure to do so would end up causing heat stroke and collapse.

Roger rang Brenda and told her how the course was going and she had told him how she’d had her first driving lesson in his car. “The car is still in one piece isn’t it love said Roger.’

“Cheeky bugger replied Brenda.’

Tell mam that everything is alright here for me will you. Once we get this first week over Ronnie and I will be in our stride. Have you been out with Ann this weekend?

“No; I’ve been waiting for you to call me.’ I miss you so much Roger.’

“It won’t be for long Brenda; I will be home before you know it.’

Look I must go I’ve got kit to iron for tomorrow’s gym test and a nine mile yomp with a forty pound pack on my back.’

Take care of yourself Roger; I love you.’

“I love you too, bye for now.’

Roger put down the phone and it was immediately taken up by someone else in the queue.

The gym test consisted of a circuit of exercises all done to a beeper. Then there was a rope climb and they had to carry someone in a fireman’s lift whilst running.

Ronnie and Roger sailed through the gym tests as there preparation for this from Sergeant Connelly had helped. That afternoon they did the nine mile yomp. This time it was across fields and boggy ground that was heavier on the legs. Roger met up with Roger to ask him how it was going and he smiled and said that he was glad that they had trained for two years for this.

“As expected more of the recruits dropped out after seven miles even after being urged by both Ronnie and Roger.

Another six recruits had been lost and they weren’t even through the first week of training. By Friday of that week they did their first night time yomp again across the boggy ground in the dark. It was cold and many of the lads tired.

Roger urged the men on until they came to the finish line some twelve miles from the camp.’
