1. It glitters

I was told, once, that human’s love of glitter is an evolutionary response. I heard that we search for things that glimmer because they remind us of water, and that the sparkle is meant to lead to a life source. We are magpies, our treasure is our survival. These things that sheen and this light that dances should lead us to life, to the water.

It can be a trick too, of course. Mirages can twinkle in the distance and thirsty souls will trick themselves and march on. These people will die in the desert, thinking that they’re steps from the water no matter how many steps they’ve already taken. The sea glitters like nothing else in this world but it will not heal your wounds, it will not quench your thirst. One sip of sea water and you go mad, you drink the water and you’re sucked dry by the salt. This glimmer is a trick, the sea will be just as dangerous and calculating after you drink from it as it was before.

Some people trick us like the salt water. They make themselves glow like something beautiful but they’ll suck the life right out of you too. Some people use their beauty to create madness within others. Like salt water, you can drink in as much of them as you like but they are vastly unchanged, they remain a sea and they ruin you. Some people are mirages, they lead you in with beautiful promises but you’re never going to reach them, you’re never going to touch. They lead you in with things that don’t exist and they’ll watch as you slowly shrivel. This shining beauty that evolution has taught us to follow can trick us, cloud our thoughts and twist our minds.

There’s drowning too. We immerse ourselves in that beauty and that sparkle and we sink in to it. The ocean swallows us whole and we breathe it in. Puddles don’t glimmer like oceans do, the beautiful and the dangerous shine and we fall for them, fall in to them and they swallow us whole.

Her eyes sparkle. The dress she wore to prom sparkled. Her earrings catch the light when she throws her head back to laugh and they sparkle. Sometimes, when she’s holding some exciting thought inside herself that she really likes, you can see it glittering in her eyes. She almost glows when she hears a joke she likes, and sometimes they’re mine. I don’t know much about evolution and I don’t know how far I’d walk for water, but I look at her and the way she glimmers and I know I’d walk past survival for her. I don’t know if she’s a mirage or an oasis but I would walk anyway.

It’s foolish, probably. I watch others do the same and think myself better for not being taken it. Then it comes to her and all I am is thirst as logic disappears. I’ll blame it on survival instinct, I see her shining and it’s worth the risk. Every step.
