The Not-Quite-Day

A thought from my walk to school this morning.

1. The Not-Quite-Day

I stood in the lane,
With my feet in the early frost
And watched the day breath brightness into a darkened sky.

For a moment,
In the dim of the not-quite-day,
It was still.

A leaf fluttered by
In the palm
of a gentle wind
And the eye of the sun
cried a stream
of early light
And a bright-feathered bird
Kept watch
Over the interloper.

For a heartbeat
(just a heartbeat)
There was hush.

And then on the road
The roar of an engine,
First to the early-morning rush.

And the beauty was broken.
And the calm was cracked.
And the moment was gone.
