3. The Great Escape

Tamashi woke up before the sun had come out, he stared at the stars for a few minutes, his blue eyes were filled with hope. He had not experienced this feeling in his gut before, but it made him smile and excited to get out of the castle, it made him feel confident. He looked over at the empty courtyard his eyes peering at the guards that were posted at every station, in case an intruder were to try and slip in, or in case of a prisoner slipping out.

The full moon shined brightly over the stone castle, most guards were awake and guarding, while some were leaning against the castle wall asleep. They had a little bit of armor on them such as helmets, chest pieces, shoulder pads, and gauntlets. They had spears attached to their backs by a sheath that was holding the spears in place. Some had swords that were attached to their belts.

There was a well in the middle of the castle courtyard along with many torches around the area, it was a clear night. There was also a wooden building with a sign that read 'Smithy' buildings stretched around the courtyard, most of them were stands where merchants would sell their goods.

Tamashi sighed as he made sure the coast was clear, then made sure the guards were still asleep before he snuck past.

He began to tiptoe his way to the crates, then accidentally kicked a pebble which hit a guard. The guard stirred in his sleep as he then opened his eyes, he then grabbed Tamashi.
“You there! Slave!” The guard yelled at Tamashi, he then grabbed him by the throat and soon began to choke him. He grabbed the sword from the guard’s sheath and stabbed the man with it. The man screamed and backed up, he grabbed Tamashi and slammed him into the wall. He went for another blow at Tamashi, Tamashi quickly grabbed the sword and then slashed at his neck. The guard attempted to scream, gargling blood in the process. He fell down dead, Tamashi began to hear the guards yelling and running towards the commotion.

He quickly pushed the crates out of the way which caused a loud thump, the guards running towards the scene, while other guards began to wake up those who were asleep. He scrambled went under the small hole in the wall and crawled through the dirty passageway dodging cobwebs, once he got out on the other side he dusted off his clothes and walked down the dirt path.

Tamashi could hear the guards yelling in alarm thinking an intruder had gotten into the castle. Who had killed the guard which caused Tamashi to run just in case they saw him. Tamashi smiled. He was free, finally free.

The boy kept running for about nearly half an hour before he then saw the village. He entered the village which consisted of mostly houses. There was an inn, a tavern, and a few shops. There also was the wizard tower, which was a large tower, about six stories high. He looked around the village for a place to stay, he knocked on houses and asked to stay the night. Nobody allowed him to and mostly just slammed their doors in his face.

He went into a shop, inside there were paintings everywhere along with some old ragged clothes, a merchant stood there with clothes. Some rich like clothing that the king and nobility would most likely buy. He saw some nice looking black clothes made of cotton, he grabbed it and went to the wooden counter area. "20 Schillings." The man at the wooden counter said.
"Erm.." Tamashi muttered checking in his pockets, he found 5 Schillings he'd then hand it to the man.
"Aye, not much more huh? Well forget it. I'm not letting you buy them with that measly amount of Schillings, now get out." The man said giving his coins back.

Tamashi nodded, feeling a bit upset and walked out of the shop, he sighed and looked around the village. There were many houses and there were about three shops altogether, along with the Wizard Tower.

He thought he would try again about knocking on one of the doors of the houses to try and find a place to stay for the night, but none of them would allow him to stay. They would probably know he was a slave and bring him back to the castle to do more slave work, Tamashi disliked the thought. ‘Sleeping outside again? Never!’. The air was beginning to get chilly and it could be dangerous to be outside alone, the guards could come after him or a creature would probably try to hunt him down. Tamashi knew the dangers of being outside alone after dark, but he didn't mind the thought of it anymore. He was just exhausted. He continued to look around figuring out a place to sleep for the night.

A few feet away from Tamashi was an old sign that said 'Hollow Wood’' he began to venture out into the forest, owls hooting which frightened him and other unknown animal sounds he had never heard in his life. He came a large tree in the middle of the forest, he knew elves mostly lived in these woods. He shivered from the cold feeling rather exhausted, he looked around for an area to rest. Soon Tamashi found a large pile of leaves to sleep in that was on the edge of the forest, he laid down into the crunchy dead leaves and sighed, he closed his eyes and soon fell asleep.
