Remembering Oceans

I... I can't quite recall what it was that happened back then... The waves splashing against me, cooling me in the hot sun. My mother calling for me... Why was she calling me? I don't know... That is all I can remember...

I... I can't quite recall what it was that happened back then... The waves splashing against me, cooling me in the hot sun. My mother calling for me... Why was she calling me? I don't know... That is all I can remember...

I swim through the reef and stretch as I curl my fins this way and that. I glide around bends in between the coral and rock reef while the sun shines through the water illuminating the beautiful ocean before me. My fingers dance across the sea floor, starfish, and sea kelp as I swim near to the waters edge. The land, I can see it.

My heart starts beating faster out of nervous excitement, as mer-folk are taught to stay away from the shallow waters. A smile spreads across my face as I swim to a wall of rocks and settle between a human-made floating... shell thing... and a pillar covered in barnacles. I pop my head out of the water and examine my surroundings catching a glimpse of a human I have seen once before, at the beach. My ears begin to adjust to the sounds I am hearing as the clashing of human-made objects catches my attention.

The human begins to move in my direction and sets something down near the floating shell shaped thing. almost noticed, I slip under the water leaving ripples on the surface where I once was. There were a series of clanging and thumping noises followed by a THUNK-SPLOOSH. A three-armed, squid-shaped, object fell to the sea floor leaving the human upset, then walking away from the place the object fell.

I swim over to the three-armed squid thing and lift with all the strength I can muster. It's heavy. I begin to swim side to side and manage to lift it off the ground, flipping up sand behind me. I swim as fast as my fins will carry me and get close enough to the surface to reach the human-made floating thing. I heave it over the side of the floating thing and hear a satisfying thunk.

I turn and swim away from the place with the human, just in time to see him look back to the vessel confusedly, and go back towards my cove. As I leave I hear a monstrous roaring and a large shadow passes over me. The human-made floating thing is moving at great speeds toward the reef near where I live.

The actions of this human spark curiosity in me and I begin to follow. I trail behind him moving as fast as I can. Fish and coral pass in a blur as I continue to gain speed. Filled with incredible joy I swim along side his vessel, just barely skimming the surface of the water.

I feel my scales shining in the sun, the warm water surrounding me, and the current of this vessel challenging me. I am in complete bliss. Something touches my tail and I realize that the human has mistaken me for a dolphin or porpoise. I hurriedly fall away from the vessel and follow from a further distance.

When the human arrives at an island, I continue following as the speed of his vessel slows. He makes a loop to the other side of the island and the roaring of the vessel stops. He drifts along until he reaches the shore, then securing the vessel upon the sand.

I watch curiously as he begins to shed his layers, piling them on the rocks. The water catches one of his layers and pulls it my direction. I swim after it and find that it is made of some sort of woven... plant?

I carefully travel to the opposite side of the rock that the human is near. The water pushes me up onto the sand, trapping me on the land. I place the layer back on the rock and attempt to return to the water. I find that the strength of my arms is not nearly enough to return me to the water.

I am drying out. I am unable to breathe! Water, Water!

My vision begins to become dark as I see the human peer over the rock. I am unable to see, but I feel the human's hands push against me. I begin to roll as I lose consciousness.
