9. Coaster

“Look at Nick’s suit!” Ellis laughed, pointing at a glaring Nick. We just got out of the room, and Ellis was commenting about the fact Nick’s suit was glowing because of the black lights.

“Come on.” Coach said, leading us down the ramp to the swan boats in the water. He shot infected as he went, and Rochelle covered him.

“I ever tell you about the time my buddy Keith drowned in the Tunnel of Love? You wouldn't think it could happen 'cause the water's so shallow, but that's how it gets you, man. Overconfidence. Keith was with his lady at the time, and he was yellin' for her to save him, but she didn't want to get wet.” Ellis said, looking at the water.

“Ellis, how old are you?” Rochelle randomly asked, making me think of last night.

“23. Why?” Ellis responded, looking at the female curiously.

“Oh no reason.” Rochelle answered, shrugging her shoulders.

We continued through the entire thing, and encountered 1 witch. Nick accidentally startled her so we had to shoot and follow after the witch that was following Nick. The entire time we were there, I was thinking of Ellis. I watched him when I could, which was most of the time, and made sure to look away if he looked at me.

Once we finally got out of the tunnel of love, we met a tank. It roared and hit Rochelle into a building. We all fired at it, backing up as we did so.

“Shoot it! Shoot it!” Nick yelled. I felt my back hit a wall, and I turned to look at what I hit. I was in between a brick wall and a dumpster. I looked back at the tank and gasped. He was coming right at me. I shot it as much as I could, but let out a sigh of relief when he turned to Coach. Coach got backed up into a wall, but the tank didn’t switch to somebody else.

He hit Coach into the wall, and continued to pound him until Coach got incapacitated. He then turned to Ellis and was going towards Ellis when he finally died. Rochelle ran over to Coach and quickly helped him up. Once Coach was up we all ran over to the fence. Finding one section that was bent, allowing us access through, we all ran through.

“I ever tell you about the time my buddy Keith fell out the rollercoaster? Yeah, he didn't drop far, mind you, just onto the tracks, but the carnival people wouldn't stop the ride 'cause all the other people paid good money and Keith snuck on for free, so he had to dodge for, like, 20 minutes or so.”

“Ellis, are you really telling a story right now?” Nick grumbled.

“Come on, we’ve gotta turn on the coaster.” Coach walked over to the control panel.

“Wait, we’ve gotta run the coaster? Oh my gosh it’s Christmas!” Ellis smiled. I rolled my eyes and watched Coach hit the button to start up the coaster. The ride began and the cart that would hold people went past. The gates guarding our entrance to the coaster opened, and we all ran through.

“Run run run!” I shouted. Ellis and I turned to look behind us at the incoming infected. We shot them down while the other 3 covered our backs.

“Reloading!” Ellis shouted. I shot at the zombies, then turned to run. We followed after our teammates until we came across a boomer. The boomer got too close to the other 3, so when he exploded they got covered in boomer bile.

Lots and lots of zombies came running from the back of us, so I took out my crowbar and Ellis took out his guitar to take care of them.

“I’m down!” Coach yelled. I looked over to see Coach got incapacitated and that Rochelle was trying to protect him and herself. Nick was getting Coach up, which was kind of hard considering all the zombies around us. Once Coach was up, we took off again.

While we were running, we tried to protect Coach more. We didn’t have time to stop and properly heal him.

“It’s off!” Nick yelled to us after flipping the switch.

“Man I hurt.” Coach panted, leaning against a wall.

“Here, let me help ya. That’s what friends are for!” Ellis smiled, pulling out his health kit.

“All right now, we’re back in business!” Coach exclaimed once Ellis was done. I decapitated another zombie, then turned to Rochelle.

“Come on, let’s go.” She ran up a ramp and across a little bridge while the rest of us followed. “Safe room up ahead.” We all ran inside and Nick closed the door.

“I get the chair.” Coach called, sitting down in an armchair. After a couple of hours of talking, the rest of us settled down on the floor to sleep.

Ellis P.O.V.

Wow, I knew those zombie books were nonfiction! Being in a zombie apocalypse makes things more exciting, that’s for sure. I smiled from my spot on the floor, looking over at Coach who was about 7 feet from me. I lay there for a little while longer, thinking about all the fun I had today. Sure there was the bad things, like Coach getting incapacitated like 2 times or something.

I wonder what Keith would be doing right now if he was with me. Man, he’d probably be putting some shaving cream in Nick’s hand, then he’d tickle Nick’s nose with a feather to prank him.

I rolled over so my left shoulder was to the floor. I can’t wait to tell Keith that I got to drive Jimmy Gibbs Jr.’s stock car! He would be so jealous! I rolled over again so my right shoulder was to the floor and frowned. Man, this is uncomfortable.

I sighed and sat up, looking around me. I spotted the 2 ladies sleeping on the floor and smiled. Rochelle was an awesome lady. She could kick zombie butt, I tell you!

Then there was (Y/N)...she was….the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen! She laughed at my jokes, well, just the one I told her, but still. She also pays attention to my stories about me and Keith. She’s also got that nice (Hair length) (H/C) hair, and those fascinating (E/C) eyes!

I blushed red at the thought, looking over at her sleeping form. She looked so peaceful, so content, so beautiful. I sighed, looking down. There’s no way she’d love someone like me. She probably fancies Nick, I mean, Nick really knows what to do. (He told me one time about how he was able to get the senator to give him ten thousand dollars just by winking at her!) I saw (Y/N) and Nick talking to each other last night, maybe that’s what they were doing.

I sighed again and got up. I walked over to Rochelle and gently shook her awake. If I were to talk to anybody else, they would’ve made fun of me for liking (Y/N). At least with Rochelle she wouldn’t judge me too harshly.

“Mmm? What?” Rochelle asked groggily. “What is it Ellis?”

“Can I...can I talk to you about something private?”

She sat up and rubbed her eyes. “Sure, I guess.” I sat down next to her and breathed in and out.

“I...like someone.” Rochelle blinked.

“You woke me up just to tell me you like someone?” She asked.

“No! Well, yes, ah, ugh.” I hung my head. “I don’t know.” She raised her eyebrows.

“Then who is she?” I glanced over at (Y/N). Rochelle followed my gaze and smiled. “(Y/N)?”

“Y-Yeah.” I played with my fingers. Rochelle laughed slightly, making me frown. “What are you laughing about? It ain’t funny.” She waved her hand in a nonchalant way.

“No, no, it’s just ironic.” I tilted my head.

“What’s ironic?”

“Nothing.” She answered quickly.

“What am I supposed to do?” I sighed. “She probably doesn’t like me back, and I can’t pretend like I don’t like her!”

“Oh you’ll be fine! Honestly, if you 2 do get together, I would approve.” I looked at her, open mouthed. “Yes, I ship you two.” I smiled big and hugged her.

“You’re the best Rochelle!” I got up and danced around the room. She rolled her eyes and layed back down, closing her eyes to got to sleep. I walked over to (Y/N) and kneeled down by her figure. I kissed her forehead.

“Sleep good sweetheart.” I then, blushing beet red, went back over to my spot and lied down.
