“Don’t for one moment think that farming is easy Tom because it isn’t. It’s a twenty four hour a day job.’

Come, I will show you around, careful where you tread though.’

Brian explained in layman’s terms how everything worked from milking cows to pig husbandry, and keeping sheep herds.

“I tell you what Tom, since you know Nancy how would you fancy coming to work for me?’

“How much would it be a week?’

“How much do you earn a week on the quay?’

“About ten pounds a week plus tips.’ I end up with about fifteen pounds a week.’

“Okay, I am willing to start you off at twenty pounds per week and then it will go up as you learn.’

“I would have to give a weeks notice down at the quay Mr Jackson; but I would like to take you up on your offer.’

“Can you come here next Sunday morning and I will show you the ropes then you can start properly on the Monday.’

“Tom shook Brian’s hand.’

“Tom is going to enrol at night school Brian to learn agriculture and animal husbandry aren’t you Tom.’

“Yes, and Nancy is too.’

“That is good because if you can get qualified then I can give you more responsibility and of course you will earn a better salary.’

“Sounds good to me said Tom with a grin as big as a Cheshire cat.’

“Right then I will see you next Sunday morning at 5am that’s one thing you will learn the animals wake up early here.’

“Not a problem Mr Jackson.’

“Brian Please;

“Right then Brian I will see you a week today.’

They closed the gate and headed to the car. When Tom got in he laughed and said I don’t know how you just did that Nancy; I went from working on the fish quay to working on a farm in the blinking of an eye.’

“All you needed was a leap of faith Tom; a push in the right direction. Now you have a great opportunity here so don’t mess it up.’

“I won’t Nancy, this is what I’ve always wanted you to do, and now I’m going to do it all thanks to you. He leaned across and kissed her passionately.

“How about you and me going back to my house and celebrate.’

“Do you want to take another bath with me?’

“Well, yes but I’m not sixteen for another six hours.’

“I wont’ tell if you don’t she said.’

“What are we waiting for let’s go? But… I have got no you know what’s.’

“Don’t worry I have got one or two knocking around at my house.’

“I get them to hand out to girls in the homes I visit. It stops unwanted pregnancy.’

“Oh I was wondering why you would have them in your house.’
