Chapter 3

🔥Akira🔥

Memories. Rushing through my head. History. Math. Everything. Knowledge that some of the smartest people would never be able to comprehend. Too much. Overwhelming. Make it stop. Breaking inside. I can’t-

I woke up, but of course I wasn’t drenched in sweat. I never was; it would evaporate too quickly anyways. I sat on the edge of my bed, trying not to think about my screaming headache. I glanced over at the clock. 5:23. Deciding that I was never going to be able to get back to sleep, I stood up and walked downstairs to the kitchen. After cooling down my hands with I warmed up some leftover rice in the oven that I had in the refrigerator. I hate microwaves. It doesn’t give food the chance to show it’s full potential. My rice warm, I walked out onto my porch. Sitting down, I pick up a book that I had left lying on the table. I’m naturally an early riser, so being up at 5:30 in the morning doesn’t bother me very much. After pulling my black hair back in a ponytail, I started to read. One of my many hobbies.

After reading for about 30 minutes, my neck started to ache, so I decided to start my day by walking back up to my room and taking off my pajamas. I slipped into one of my school uniforms, made up of a black t-shirt, a short red tie, and a black and red plaid skirt. Too nerdy-looking for my liking, but I guess it isn’t the worst thing in the world either; I’ve seen worse school uniforms. I glanced at my gold watch, which stated that it was 6:11. Time to run.

I grabbed my backpack and my purse that were hanging on the wall and went out the door, locking it behind me. I set my belongings down on the front step and walked into the bamboo forest in front of me. I closed my eyes and touched my red/gold necklace that was hanging around my neck. I focused on what form I wanted to take: my wolf. My bones felt like they were turning into liquid flame, slowly taking shape into the bones of a wolf. When I opened my eyes again, I could feel a slight breeze ruffling my black fur. As you can obviously tell, I am not like the other teenage girls here in Tokyo. I am a Half Breed, and I am proud of it. I have never run into a person quite like myself, so I have come to believe that I am the only one, a lone wolf in this vast world.

Being a Half Breed is a gift, not a burden. It can be tiring at some points in time, but it is a rare privilege. My two true forms are my wolf and a phoenix. Technically, I have wings on my back, no matter what. But I keep them hidden, so no one will see them. I love to fly, but that is something that is best done at night. In the daytime I would be seen much more easily.

I started to sprint back to the direction of home, knowing that I needed to start walking to school.  As soon as I got back, I turned back into my human form and grabbed my stuff from the steps. I glanced at my watch: 7:48. I’m going to be late! I sprinted along a forest path that was lined with stones and eventually reached the edge of the forest. My forest is surrounded by a tall metal fence; I don’t like intruders. I pushed through the gate and locked it hastily behind me. Thankfully, I don’t live too far from school. It’s only about 8 blocks away. When I finally reached Sakura High School, Leiko walked stupidly from behind one of the tall pillars.

“Well, hello there, Akira. So nice to run into you!” she said obnoxiously.

“Leave me alone, Leiko. I need to get to class on time,”.

“Oh, can’t you just spare a single minute?” she begged sarcastically.

“What do you want….?”

“Well I was just wondering if maybe….just maybe….you could finish my math homework for me?” I just rolled my eyes and walked off. “It’s just a few problems!” I kept walking, trying to get to my locker. She always depends on me to do her dirty work when she does nothing but be cruel to me in return. I took out the books that I needed for Science and sprinted off to the classroom. When I walked in the door, Ms. Suzuki glared at me from behind her desk. She doesn’t like me. At all.

“You’re late,” she said to me coldly. Looking at the clock, it read that is was 8:02. I  was 2 minutes late, but she always made a huge deal out of this sort of thing. I quickly apologized and hustled to my seat. Ms. Suzuki continued speaking to the class. “As I was SAYING, a new student has chosen to transfer to our school from upper Japan. Would you like to introduce yourself?” The new girl nodded nervously and walked up to the front of the classroom.  I recognized her almost immediately; her long, unique white hair gave away her identity. She was that girl from the shelter yesterday! I stiffened, but forced myself to relax.

“Um…..hi everyone,” she said quietly. “My name is Zephyra, and I am really happy to be here with you all!” Zephyra said the last part probably more quickly and loudly than she had meant to . She hustled back to her seat and sat down.

“Well then… we are so glad that you have decided to attend our high school, Zephyra,” she stated. “Now, I need someone to show her around. Right away.” Of course a lot of the class raised their hands, desperate to have an excuse to skip class. I kept my hand down, so of course Ms. Suzuki felt like it was appropriate to have ME do it.

“Akira. You will show Zephyra the school,” she said smugly. There was amusement in her eyes. I stood up and walked over to the doorway, where Ms. Suzuki was directing Zephyra. When we were both out in the hallway, she shut the door behind us. The hall was completely empty; everyone was in class. We strolled down the hallway in silence until Zephyra broke it.

“Aren’t you the girl that was at the shelter the other day?” she asked curiously.

“Yeah. Um… how is Breeze doing? Is she settling in ok?” I replied, not really knowing what to say back. I sound so awkward! I need to sound more calm and collected!

“Oh yeah! She’s doing just fine. She slept next to me on a bed I made for her last night.” I nodded and managed a slight smile. Zephyra seemed to be warming up to me, which was weird. I could already tell that she would be hanging out with the popular girls by lunch.  As we walked, I showed her where the big places were, like the library, gym, and cafeteria. After a while, I started to smell something that was coming from her. It was a weird scent, almost like she was…from a Half-Breed pack! Humans could never come close to wild packs like that and they never come anywhere near to humans!  I felt myself stiffen beside her.

“Are you ok?” Zephyra asked me.

“Yeah, of course I am. I just….realized what time it was. We should probably get going back to class.” she nodded. After walking down a long series of hallways, we finally reached the classroom.

“Um….thanks for showing me around,” she said quietly. “Not to pry, but…you seemed kind of sad yesterday. Is there something wrong?” No one has ever asked me that before.... I felt tears starting to well up in my eyes. Wait...tears?! That has never happened to me before. It it’s impossible for me to cry unless something really gets me upset.

Zephyra, there is always something wrong,” I said back, and briskly opened the door to the science room.
