FADE IN:

Sound of steady beeping as camera pans from a vase of flowers towards a heart monitor. Continues on to focus on a jaundiced blonde (REGAN), asleep. She stirs. Camera shifts to second bed in the room. On it rests BLAIR, a girl with dark hair and no expression.

REGAN

Hi.

BLAIR does not respond.

REGAN

My name's Regan. What's yours?

BLAIR stares resolutely at the wall.

REGAN

It's okay if you don't want to say. I hope you don't mind me talking, though. I've never had a roommate before. It gets kind of lonely.

(silent pause)

I'm actually kind of confused about it. They don't usually put people like you- um. Sorry.

(nervous glance)

The other girl ignores her.

REGAN

I mean, they don't usually put people like me in with... I'm sorry. I'll just stop.

Silence for thirty seconds, the monitor beeping steadily.

REGAN

(chattering still)

I hope you don't think I'm like, a stalker or anything. It's just, I heard the doctors talking while you were asleep. I know about the pills and, um...

(glances at the bandages on Blair's wrists. Blair moves to cover them.)

Sorry. Really. Wow, I'm making a great first impression, aren't I? God. I really am going to stop talking now. Sorry.

REGAN sighs, turning away. BLAIR frowns and closes her eyes.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

Camera is blurry as BLAIR opens her eyes. Focuses on NURSE leaving REGAN'S side of room. NURSE smiles at both girls, then closes the door.

REGAN

(exhausted but smiling)

Hi.

BLAIR looks at her silently.

REGAN

Listen, I feel really bad about earlier. I shouldn't have said that stuff. I guess it's just been so long that I forgot how to act normally.

Pause as REGAN waits for response from BLAIR. BLAIR hesitates, but remains silent.

REGAN

(slowly)

So, to even the playing field, I thought I'd tell you stuff about me that you probably don't care about.  You can ignore me if you want.

(pause)

I'm seventeen, my favorite color is orange, and I want to be an astrophysicist. Or an actor. Oh, and I have stage IV pancreatic cancer and three weeks to live, apparently.

BLAIR averts her gaze.

REGAN

(nonchalant)

If you're feeling sorry for me, don't. It is what it is.

Long silence. REGAN closes her eyes; it is unclear whether she is still awake. BLAIR looks over.

BLAIR

(barely above a whisper)

My name is Blair.

REGAN

(Smiles)

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

Time lapse shots of REGAN watching TV while BLAIR sleeps, REGAN sleeping while BLAIR flips through a magazine, them both sleeping, REGAN awake at night writing in a notebook. Finally, cut to them both awake in daylight.

REGAN

(conversationally)

So, how old are you?

BLAIR

Eighteen.

REGAN

(interested)

You can drive, then?

BLAIR

Yeah? Why?

REGAN

(quickly)

No reason. So, how long are they keeping you in this place?

BLAIR

Another day or two, I think.

REGAN

Lucky.

BLAIR

What about you?

REGAN

(smiling wryly)

I try not to think of that.

BLAIR

(embarrassed)

Sorry.

REGAN

It's alright. I try not to, but it always ends up happening anyways.

REGAN turns towards the first floor window, looking out at cars in the parking lot.

REGAN

(idly)

I wish the view was better.

Long pause. BLAIR shifts uncomfortably in her bed. REGAN turns back to look at her.

REGAN

(slightly nervous)

Can I ask you a question?

BLAIR

(hesitates then shrugs)

Sure.

REGAN

Do you still want to die?

Tense silence. REGAN begins to pick at the hem of her blanket. BLAIR looks away. Vague sounds of a soap opera on TV.

BLAIR

(quietly)

Not here.

REGAN

(nodding)

So you understand me.

BLAIR

(confused)

What?

REGAN turns, her eyes strong in comparison to her frail body.

REGAN

I don't want to die here.

BLAIR

Who says-

You're not-

REGAN

(laughing humorlessly)

I'm just being realistic. I can feel it. I've made my peace with it. I just don't want to die here.

(gestures at the room)

Not with this machine beeping in my ear and these stupid florescent lights. Not with a thousand different drugs making everything fuzzy.

(wistfully)

I want to go outside again. I want the fresh air and the stars.

BLAIR

I'm sorry.

REGAN

(shaking her head)

I didn't tell you that because I want your pity. I want your help.

BLAIR looks wary, but allows her to continue.

REGAN

I'm sorry to ask you this so soon. I mean, I hardly know you, and this is a huge favor, but there's no one else to turn to. My family would never help me. The nurses refuse. You're going to be gone in a day or two and I could miss my chance. So, I'm sorry, and you're free to say no of course.

BLAIR

What do you need?

REGAN

(determined)

I need you to break me out of here. Take me somewhere I can die in peace.

BLAIR

You mean help you commit suicide.

REGAN looks pointedly at the bandages on BLAIR'S wrists. She raises a brow.

REGAN

You understand.

BLAIR frowns, thinks for a moment.

BLAIR

Alright. I'll help you. On one condition.

REGAN

(with dry humor)

Whatever I, a dying girl, can give you, sure.

BLAIR

Let me go with you.

REGAN

(confused)

Go...

(clarity dawns)

Oh.

REGAN pauses longer than BLAIR had.

REGAN

I suppose that's your decision. But are you sure that's what you really want?

BLAIR

(confidently)

Yes.

REGAN

(smiling grimly)

Then we have a deal.

FADE OUT
