28. Chapter Twenty Seven

Ashley's POV

"You look beautiful, my darling." I smiled, pinning Nicole's hair into a bun. "Why, thank you mommy." She replied, watching me. "Now, do you remember your lines, my big princess?" I asked. "Every one of them. Uncle Henry helped me." She replied. "Good." I smiled, kissing her cheek.

"Mommy, is daddy coming tonight?" She asked. "He said he was going to try. You know how daddy is." I replied. She nodded, and looked down. "Hey, that doesn't mean I won't be in the audience. I'll be in the front row with Jack, Bry, grandpa and even Uncle Henry. Maybe Aunt Anne too." I smiled. She smiled widely, and hugged me. "I love you so much baby girl." I whispered.

"Who's ready to go to her play?" Henry asked, bouncing his son and Bryant in his arms. The boys both giggled at the same time. "Come on, my princess." I said, guiding Nicole out of her room.

"Jaclyn Rose! Come on honey!" I yelled up the stairs. "Coming!" She yelled back. I heard her door slam close, then saw her at the top of the stairs.

"Henry, please don't drop Bryant like you dropped Jackie when she was little." I groaned. "I won't this time. I finally know how to old a child." He replied, grabbing a bunch of diapers.

"How are you holding up?" Henry asked, as we walked out the door. "Good, surprisingly. You know, the occasionally frustration with the kids." I replied. "Understandable. But hey, I'm here for you, you know that." He smiled. "Thank you." I replied, bumping into him.

"Jackie, buckle up please." I said, looking at her. "But I don't want to." She replied. "Jaclyn, please buckle up?" I asked again. She sighed, and clicked the seatbelt.

"Am I driving, or you?" Henry asked, closing the passenger side door. "I don't know. If you want to drive, you can. It's only at the high school." I replied. "Alright, I'll drive." He informed.

"Are you excited?" I asked, turning to Nicole. She nodded frantically, and clapped her hands. "I have a big part, mommy." She smiled. "I know you do." I replied, with a smile.

We all took our seats in the front row, right in the middle. Bryant sat on my lap, with his head leaning against my chest, and Jackie say next to me, with her head on my shoulder. Next to her, Henry sat with his hand clasped in Jackie's, and his son's head on his shoulder.

"Dad." Jackie whispered. "What?" I asked. She shot out of her chair, and ran out of the aisle. "Where'd she go?" Henry asked. "Probably off with her friends." I replied.

"Hey, did I miss anything?" Someone asked. I turned my head, and dropped my jaw. "You came?" I asked. "I told you I was going to come." Ashton replied, fixing Jackie in his arms.

"Um, here, take a seat." I said, moving down a seat. "Ashton." Henry said. "Henry." Ashton replied. "Maybe having you two sitting near each other isn't a good idea. Ashton, take my seat. I'll take Jackie's." I said, getting up.

"Good afternoon parents, grandparents, relatives. I want to start off with thanking each and every one of you for having your children in this play. They have worked very hard, this passed week. And they have come so far. Now, with out further ado, please welcome, Nicole Irwin as our main lead." The teacher informed.

"She's the lead?" I asked Henry. "I guess so." He replied. I smiled widely, and stared at the stage.

"Does anyone know the song Itsy Bitsy Spider?" She asked. Some people clapped, and some whistled. "Well, it goes something like this." She said. She belted out the notes to Itsy Bitsy Spider, sounding amazing. "That's my baby." I whispered, holding Henry's hand.

"Little spiders, where are you?" She asked, turning her head. A bunch of kids dressed as spiders came running out of the curtains, and everyone cooed at them.

"This is Tina spider, Jackie spider, Ryan spider, and Harold spider." She informed, tapping each on the head. "I'm the oldest spider. Oldest meaning... I'm only five. But wait, I'm almost six." She said. Everyone laughed.

"She's really good." Ashton whispered to me. "I know." I replied, with a smile on my face. "See Nikki, Bry?" I asked, peeking my head to his cheek. He nodded, and pointed. "Yeah, isn't she good?" I asked. He shrugged.

"You did great honey!" I exclaimed, picking up Nicole. "Really?" She asked. I nodded. "And guess what?" I asked. "What?" She replied. I put her on the ground, and moved to the side, and her eyes got wide.

"Daddy!" She yelled, running to Ashton. He scooped her up, and kissed her cheek. "Hi princess." He smiled. "I missed you." She smiled, putting her head on his shoulder.

"Nic, daddy and I decided to go out for some dinner, sound good?" I asked. "Pirates cove?!" She exclaimed. "Pirates cove." I replied. She clapped her hands enthusiastically, and smiled. "Come on!" She yelled.

"I'll take my car?" Ashton asked. "Whatever works." I replied with a shrug. "Mommy, can I go with daddy?" Nicole asked. "Yeah, me too?" Jackie joined. "I have to get the car seats from the car." I replied. "Please mom." Jackie begged. "Alright." I sighed.

"This is Nicole's." I informed, putting the car seat in Ashton's car. "And this is-" "Bryant's. I know, Ash. They're my kids too." He cut me off. "Right, sorry. Forgot that part." I replied. "Yeah, well, you wouldn't have forgotten it if you didn't make that scene on vacation." He replied, closing the door, once Nicole was buckled in.

"Not here Ashton, alright?" I asked. "Hey, you started it." He replied. "Please, don't be such a child. You're an adult. You shouldn't be blaming people for your own problems." I said. He rolled his eyes, and buckled Bryant in.

"This is why we aren't working out. We don't get along anymore. And it's only a matter of time until we're officially done." I said. He nodded, and closed the backside door. "Well, until then, these kids are also mine." He said, before getting into his car.

I walked to my car, and shook my head. "Everything okay?" Henry asked. "Nope." I replied. "Want to talk about it?" He asked. "What's there to talk about? My husband is being a child, and he's blaming me for things. I'm filing for a divorce, only if he doesn't clean his act up. That's all there is to talk about." I replied.

"Ash, maybe he's right." He said. "What do you mean?" I asked. "Maybe he's right about everything. If you didn't freak out when he told you, this wouldn't have happened." He explained. "Look, everyone sees me as the bad guy. I don't mind Ashton being childish, but it comes to a point where he has to be an actual parent. I can't be the bad guy all the time, I want to be childish sometimes too, but I can't." I replied.

Jackie's POV

"How's your mum holding up, bug?" My dad asked. "She yells a lot." I replied. "Yeah, we all knew she does." He said. "Dad, why aren't you and mom living together anymore?" I asked, looking at him.

"All I can say is.... Well.... I don't really know how to put it." He sighed. "Are you getting a divorce?" She asked. "I can't answer that question, Jack." He replied. "Why not?" I asked. "Because I don't know the answer yet." He said.

"What if you do get a divorce?" I asked. "Then I'll try my best to see you guys. Trust me, if your mum won't let me see you, I'll fight her on it." He replied.

"Can I tell you something?" I asked, taking a deep breath. "Of course, you know that." He replied. "I don't like living with just mom." I informed. "Why's that?" He asked. "Because she favors Nikki and Bry. If Bry is sick, all the attention is on him. But me? Never me. Like tonight, before we left, I told her something, and she wasn't paying attention. She doesn't like me, dad." I replied.

"That is not true." He said. "Watch at dinner tonight. Watch how she acts. It's not fair how she treats them, to me." I replied. "Jack, I know your mum, and I know she wouldn't put your siblings before you. She loves you equally." He said. I shook my head.

Ashley's POV

We walked into the Pirates Cave, and all groaned. The biggest kids place you could ever go to. Ball pits, a big ship with a trampoline, a plant that leads into a foam block pit. Every kids heaven.

"Table for six." I informed. The hostess nodded, and lead us to a big booth, right by the... 'Sea'. The sea was just a blue pained wall with white and green paint smeared across the walls.

"Mommy, I want the chicken fingers." Nicole said. "Sea turtles and.... Seaweed?" I asked. Sea turtles and Seaweed is just chicken fingers and French fries.

"Mom, can I have the jellyfish and macaroni and cheese?" Jackie asked. I looked at that meal, and shook my head. "It's really expensive, Jack." I replied. "But Nikki's is twelve dollars." She said." It's her day, honey. Let her get what she wants." I replied.

"Bryant's going to have the same thing as Nicole." I informed. "But why can't I have what I want?" Jackie asked. "Jackie, I told you why." I replied, shaking my head. "I'm going to the bathroom." Jackie informed, getting up.

Ashton's POV

I followed Jackie to the bathroom, and stopped her. "It's not fair. Why can't I get what I want?" She asked, with soft tears streaming down her face. "It's okay." I sighed, hugging her. "She's not fair. She's not a good mom." She cried.

"Jaclyn Rose. Your mum may not be fair, but she isn't a bad mum. She had to go through things when she was younger, no one should have to do. She had to put up with me, and she put up with my friends. She is an amazing mum, don't you ever think she isn't." I replied.

"Come back to the table. You get what you want, and if your mum says anything about it, I'll talk to her." I said. She nodded, and hugged me again. "I love you." I whispered, kissing her head. "I love you too." She replied.

"Mom, I want to get the food I want." Jackie said. "Jaclyn, I told you, it's too much money." Ashley replied. "Ash, Nicole and Bryant's meal costs almost thirteen dollars. Let Jackie get what she wants." I cut in. She huffed, and nodded. "Alright."

"Mommy, can we go play?" Nicole asked. "Yeah, Jackie want to go too?" Ashley replied. Jackie nodded, and left the table with the rest of the kids.

I looked at Ashley, as she looked at me. "I feel like I'm invading some private talk, so I'll go watch the younglings." Henry spoke, getting up.

"How've you been?" I asked. "Good. How about you?" Ashley replied. "Good. Busy with the guys." I replied with a nod. She nodded slowly, and looked around.

"I'm selling the house." I informed. "What? Why?" She asked. "You're not there, and I'm not there. What's the point of having it, and paying for it?" I replied. "What about Lauren? Where's she going to live?" She asked. "Back at home with my mum and Harry. She's not happy about it, but I explained to her what happened." I explained.

"Was I stupid for thinking we could grow old together? And have a new start like this?" She asked. "I don't think you were stupid. About anything. I think you wanted us to be pulled apart. I think somewhere inside of you, you're still holding grudges against me, and you're not trustworthy of me. I think somewhere inside of you, you have stopped loving me, and that's why you think you were stupid." I replied. She just blinked at me.

"But, you see... I have never stopped loving you, after everything you've done, said, threatened, did. I have ever lost my trust in you. Around Henry, your old work friends, when you went to college graduation. I think way, way, way deep down, there's anger towards you, but it hasn't surfaced.

"Unlike you, I've stayed by your side, I've comforted you, held you, loved you, for a long time. I held you when you were fighting with Jackie's father. I've loved you since I first put my eyes on you. I've stayed by your side when you were in the hospital, in a terrible time, when you were still a teenager. When Rachel was living with you." I explained.

"All of that is true." She whispered. "I know. And that's why I had to say it. I had to get my final say in things." I replied, before putting my napkin on the table.

"Where are you going?" Ashley asked, looking at me, as I got up. "I said what I needed to say. I know you want to get a divorce. I know you hate me for leaving again, but what I said, is from my own heart. And I know you too well, to know you're going to get angry at me, probably later on, and I don't want us fighting anymore.

"Friends, family, siblings and lovers all fight, but it's those who make it out alive, survive. And I know I've said this many of times before, but frankly, Ashley, we didn't make it out alive." I said, before walking off to the play area.

"Where are you going dad?" Jackie asked. "I'm going back to stay with Kyla." I replied. "Why?" She asked. "I have to, bug. I'll call you everyday, yeah?" I asked. She nodded, and hugged me.

"I love you so much, Jackie. Don't you ever forget that." I said, pressing my cheek to her hair. "I love you too, dad." She replied. "I don't want you to go." She said. "I know, but I have to. But hey, I'll call you everyday, yeah?" I asked. She nodded.

"My princess." I said, picking Nicole up. She held onto me tightly, and put her cheek to my chest. "Where are you going?" She asked. "I have to go home." I replied. "Why?" She asked. "Because I have to go help out Aunt Ky." I replied. "But you were supposed to stay the whole day." She said. "I know, but I'll come visit you as much as I can." I replied.

"My little man." I smiled, picking Bryant up. "You have to be the man of the house. You got to keep these ladies in line." I said. He just looked at me with his big eyes. "You got to help out your mum with the house. Be the man." I said. He nodded.

I put Bryant down, and walked over to Henry. "Ashton." He spoke. "Henry. Take care." I said. "You too, man." He replied. "Listen... If these kids of Ashley ever needs a man in the house when I'm gone, please, be there for them and her." I informed. "I would gladly do that." He replied.

"I will pay you monthly, if you want. Just be there for my family." I said. "You really love you, don't you?" He asked. "More than anything. But it's what she wants, and I can't keep fighting her on it. If she isn't happy, then I'm not doing my job. And if making her happy means.... Separating, then so be it." I replied.

"See you whenever, Ashton. It was a pleasure knowing you." He said, standing up. "You too, thanks for always being there for her, and the kids." I said. He nodded, and shook my hand.

I walked past Ashley, and stopped. "I'll visit the kids as much as I can. I'm staying with Kyla, so I'll be able to visit for a little. You call me when it's okay to come visit." I informed. She nodded. "Bye Ashley." I said, before walking to the door.
