neighbors (h.s)

Aubrey Millard was an ordinary university student. She lived an ordinary and boring life, until a boy moved into the other flat, connected to hers, that is. She learned very quickly that she wasn't going to have the easiest time facing her neighbor everyday as just a neighbor.

*Approximately Two Months Later*

"Yes, Mrs. Hart," I said into the phone. "I'm leaving the office now and heading home."

"You shouldn't stay so late! Get out and live a little. Oh, and for the last time, don't call me 'Mrs. Hart'. I know it's my name and I know you're my secretary, you probably think you should call me that, but I prefer Charlotte, alright?" I laughed, but nodded to myself.

"Alright, Charlotte."

"Now, get out of my office and go have a hell of a good Christmas break," she told me.

"Okay, I will," I said and she laughed.

"Bye, love!"

"Bye." She ended the call and I put my phone in my purse. I turned the lights off in my office and walked out of the door, shutting it quietly behind me. I started walking down the hall and my phone started ringing. I quickly got it out of my purse and put it up to my ear. "Hello?"

"Hey, it's me! I was wondering if you needed a ride home? I'm out and I remembered you never came home from work," Harry said and I rolled my eyes.

"I was going to take the bus."

"Well, I'm already outside, so hurry up." I smiled and hung up the phone. I walked to the lift and pressed the lobby button. As soon as I got out of the lift I said my goodbyes to Ralph, the maintenance man. I walked out of the office and looked around. "Harry, I swear to god, if you aren't here..." I said to myself. I was already freezing and I wasn't surprised. I don't own any coats, but considering it was December 13th, I should have one. I looked at my phone and realised it was Friday the 13th. Oh, joy.

Harry's car pulled up to the curb and I ran, as fast as I could in heels, to his car and got in.

"Where's your coat?" he asked me and I rubbed my arms.

"I haven't got one," I told him. He quickly took his off and put it over my shoulders. "Why are you so warm? This isn't natural," I said and he laughed. "I don't need it, though."

"Just wear it," he ordered and I sighed.

"How's Emma?" I asked and he kind of ignored me. "You are still together, right?"

"No... she dumped me twenty minutes ago," he said.

"Oh, Harry, I had no idea. I'm sorry for bringing that up, it was stupid of me."

"Don't worry about it." He laughed. "Like you said, you didn't know about it."

"I was so proud of you, though!"

"What?" he asked me.

"I didn't actually think you could keep a girlfriend for an entire three weeks," I said and smirked.

"You're an awful person, do you know that?" he asked me and I laughed.

"I'm just kidding," I said and laid my head on his shoulder. Over the couple of months living next to each other, we've created some sort of friendship between us. We either seem like best friends, or hate one another. It's usually me hating him, honestly. He has yet to get mad at me for something.

"Someone dropped by when you were at work... I don't remember his name, but he's been over before." I looked at Harry.

"Pineapple guy?" I laughed and he shook his head. "Walt?"

"Yeah, I think it was Walt," he recalled and I looked at my phone. Walt hadn't called or anything.

"I'll call him later and ask him what he needed." I laid my head back against the headrest.

"When do you go back to work?" he asked me.

"After the holidays," I said and rubbed my eyes. "When do you go back to bringing girls in every night?" He looked at me with a slight glare and rolled his eyes. "I just need to know if I need to sleep on my couch for a whole month again."

"Aubrey..." I sighed and looked out my window.

"Don't you think it's kind of awful how you just use girls like that? That kind of makes you an awful person..." I said, still looking out the window. The car became silent and no one said anything the entire ride home. I looked over at Harry as he parked, but he got out of the car so quickly, I couldn't see any of his face. He slammed the door, making me jump a little. I quickly got out and walked slowly to my flat. Why didn't you keep your mouth shut, Aubrey? I unlocked my door and opened it. Harry had already gone into his flat. I shut the door behind me and looked down to find a small note.

Aubrey,

I love you... so much, and you don't know that, but ever since you broke my heart when we were young and stupid, I have loved you even more. I pay attention in class all the time... you know that I'm smart and you make the same comment every time I call you a brainiac 'You use to be one, too'. I don't have any other excuses for coming over anymore. We've completely gone our different ways and I don't like that. I miss seeing your stupidly beautiful face everyday (that's a compliment, I swear). I miss having you tell me everything that's going on... and I just miss you. I didn't plan on just leaving this note, but you're always working and I couldn't say this in front of a hundred people that work with you. I just needed you to know that... I love you. I really do.

-Walter B.

My eyes widened as I finished reading the note. He loves me? He's been lying to me the entire time...

My doorbell rang, cutting off my thoughts, and I sighed. I laid the note down on my desk and walked to my front door. I opened it to see a puffy eyed Harry.

"Coat," he demanded.

"What?" I asked. Had I made him cry?

"Give me my coat!" he yelled. I remembered I had it on and quickly removed it from my body. I handed it to him and he started walking down the steps, to his car.

"Harry, wait, where are you going?" I asked, following him.

"I don't know," he said. I grabbed his hand and he looked back at me. "You're already freezing, just... go back inside."

"I'm sorry," I apologised. "Don't listen to the stuff I say... I don't know anything."

"But you're right. You're always right," he said and I sighed. "I'm just going out." He ripped his hand out of mine and got into his car. He drove off and I sighed. I saw someone lingering near a bush and I squinted my eyes to make the person out more clearly. It was Walt. I coughed and rubbed my arms.

"I got your note," I called out. "Hope Kayla or Kaycie didn't mind you giving it to me."

"I was never with either of them, so why would they care?" he asked me and I shook my head.

"You lied to me," I said and he stuck his hands in his pockets.

"I just missed you," he declared.

"Then why didn't you just tell me that from the start? Huh? What if I had loved you, but that went away because you're such an idiot that I thought you were just using me so that your mum didn't kill you because you were such an idiot!" I yelled. "I don't miss you at all."

"Aubrey, no, wait," he said and followed me as I started walking away. "Are you sure you got the right note? Because-" I turned around and slapped him.

"You can't come to me with a stupid letter and tell me you love me. You just don't do that!" I said and he looked down, rubbing his cheek. I walked away and shut my door. I locked it and took my shoes off. I walked into my living room and gasped. "Jesus, Gia. When did you get here?" I asked Gianna who was sitting on my couch.

"About an hour ago," she replied like it was perfectly normal.

"Are you okay...?"

"Yeah. I just remembered I had a key to your place and I came hear to take a nap. My flat mate has someone over and I was bored." I turned the light on and saw her cheek was bleeding a little.

"Hey, did you cut yourself?" I asked her, sitting down beside her. She sighed and rubbed her eyes.

"Is it bad?"

"Gia, what happened?" I asked as I saw her shirt was stained.

"He just pushed me," she began, "I just fell and hit my cheek on something."

"Who pushed you?" I asked, afraid that something bigger was happening then she was letting on.

"He didn't mean to hurt me... I just panicked and ran," she confessed. "I just... didn't know where else to go."

"Shawn? Shawn hit you?" I asked, furious.

"He didn't hit me, he just accidentally pushed me."

"Okay, Gia, these kinds of things don't happen on accident. What happened? Were you two arguing?" I asked her.

"Aubrey, I told you, it was an accident." She finally looked at me. "I would tell you if he was hurting me... I would tell you if I thought this was serious. Which I don't. He apologised so many times, he honestly didn't mean to... I was just scared that he hadn't done it on accident, so I came here."

"Well, what if he didn't?" I asked her and she shrugged.

"Were you yelling at Walt?"

"Gianna, don't change the subject."

"I'm not trying... I was a snoop and read the note..."

"Gia... that's none of your business."

"It is too! I tell you everything and you usually tell me everything... like the time you told me you were in love with Walt? Yeah, I was the person you told."

"Well, that's not the case anymore... besides, that was almost two years ago," I stated.

"He's a nice guy," she said and I shrugged.

"I'm not looking for a relationship," I lied.

"Yeah... and I have sixth toe on my left foot. Not looking for a relationship my ass! You're so lonely! All the time." I raised my eyebrows at Gianna and she sighed. "Just because Peter was a creep and only wanted sex doesn't mean every single guy is going to be like that. You know that."

"That's not the reason I don't want to be in a relationship."

"Are you still a virgin?" she asked me. "I mean, not to pry, but thinking about it... I've been friends with you for quite awhile and you've never once mentioned anything about sex." I stared at her.

"Sex is not everything," I spat.

"To people like Harry it is," she countered.

"See! It's not just Peter!"

"Okay, I take that back, I'm sure sex isn't everything to Harry."

"Just admit I'm right and you're wrong." She sighed and shook her head.

"Sex might not be everything, but it is something," she said and rubbed her cheek. "I'm going to go clean this cut... in the meanwhile, you should apologise to Mr. Sexy for whatever you said."

"What do you mean? I didn't say anything to him! Why would I apologise to him?" I asked, following her. How did she know I said something?

"Aubrey, I could feel the tension when oh, I don't know, heard like fifty doors slam shut." I sighed and walked into the bathroom with her. She looked in the mirror and sighed. "It's not even bad."

"You're disappointed about that?" I asked.

"No, it just hurts a lot more for it to be that small," she said. "Would you stop staring at my face and go call Harry?"

"Why should I? I don't like him anyway."

"My God, you two were meant for one another," she snickered.

"Oh, shut up." I slapped her arm slightly and she smirked at me. "Hey, did you get a hair cut?" I asked her, noticing her long black hair wasn't so... long.

"Yeah. It was getting way too long."

"It looks awful," I mumbled and she slapped my arm. I laughed and looked at her. "I'm just kidding, it looks really good." The sound of my doorbell echoed in my flat and I sighed. "I'll be back." I walked out of the bathroom and to the front door. I opened it and an unfamiliar blonde was standing in front of me. "Uh, hi."

"Harry doesn't live here, does he?" she asked, sighing.

"You're at the right place, just the wrong door. I don't think he's home, though." The girl sighed and looked over her shoulder.

"Of course he isn't," she muttered under her breath.

"Do you want to come in? It's really cold and if you're a friend of Harry's I don't want him thinking I caused your death because I didn't invite you in." The girl laughed and stepped inside.

"I'm his sister, actually. I'm supposed to be visiting him for the weekend, but of course he's out partying god knows where," she sighed and I looked at her.

"Sister? I didn't even know he had siblings," I said, surprised.

"Well, here I am, in the flesh," she said and I laughed.

"Here you are..." I smiled, awkwardly. "He should be back soon."

"I wouldn't get too excited... he can stay out pretty late," she said.

"Yeah... trust me, I know." As soon as I said that, I heard a car turn into the driveway. "You know, that's probably him." I opened the door and stepped outside as I saw his car. His car door swung open, and he popped out of the car, staring at me as he saw me.

"You know what, Aubrey? Maybe I am an awful person! But that's just who I am- Gemma! Whoa! What are you doing here?" Harry's mood completely changed as his sister stepped outside. "Isn't this weird..." he laughed, awkwardly and looked at me.

"And you forgot," Gemma stated, seemingly pissed.

"Forgot? What do you- Oh... I didn't forget! I simply misplaced the thought in my head. You're visiting!" he ecstatically stated, hugging his sister.

"Harry, how disgusting is your flat?" Gemma asked.

"Could you hang out here for like... five minutes?" he asked, innocently. His sister sighed and crossed her arms.

"Hurry up." Harry quickly unlocked his flat and ran in. I hugged my arms, awkwardly, like I always do and stepped back into my flat.

"You can wait in here," I offered and she waved me off.

"I'll be fine. It was nice meeting you... Audrey?"

"Aubrey," I corrected her and she nodded.

"Nice meeting you, Aubrey." I smiled and closed the door. My smile quickly vanished and I walked back to Gianna.

"Harry has a sister!" I yelled and Gianna covered my mouth.

"Thin walls... remember?"

"Why didn't he tell me that? I told him I was an only child, why didn't he just say he had a sibling?"

"Why does it matter?" Gianna asked, utterly confused.

"I don't know! I just feel enraged at the thought of him not telling me that. I told him my parents were divorced... do you think his are? I don't even know his middle name!" I yelled and realization hit me. "Oh my god... Gianna... he's using me. He's just trying to get me to fall for him." I said, feeling stupid that I didn't realize before. I leaned against my wall and looked at her. "I'm so oblivious... he knows I'm not easy... he's been freaking buttering me up for the past two months!"

"Aubrey, that's not necessarily true-"

"No! It is. This is why I am not looking for any kind of relationship. I just get used!"

"Aubrey, you're blowing this way out of proportion! Maybe he just didn't think you'd care about his life. Girls usually don't care about the guy's life... maybe he just wanted to be there for you, but he thought you wouldn't care about his problems! See, problem solved, he's not using you!" She smiled and I looked at her, disbelief spread across my face.

"You know I'm right, don't you?" I asked her and she sighed. "God, why am I always right?!"
