The long road home

Aimee hates her life, her mother is in a psych ward, her dad spends all his time with his secretary and at school she is far from popular.

That is until she meets Samual.

7. Cornfeilds and Cannibals

I'm on the bridge again, wind battering my body from every direction, Sam stands next to me but oddly he doesn't seem to be affected, he begins to snore; first softly the moving into a full roar.

The bridge tips, then bucks as if it's trying to throw me off and something digs into my shoulder, I try to breathe but my stomach won't move.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wake just as the car enters a corn field; we are thrown from side to side as the rear boot hits a clump of dirt, the car ploughs through corn like it's made of toilet paper then spins to the left.

Sam wakes confused, it takes precious seconds for him to realise what is happening and before he can put his foot on the brakes we hit a downhill then lurch down a small bank, somehow the car manages to stay upright. Sam stamps on the brake and twists the steering wheel, we come to rest just metres from another small drop.

I fumble for the seatbelt but it keeps slipping through my fingers, after two minutes I manage to unclip it, I jump out of the car like it's on fire and for all I know it could be.

Sam takes a bit longer to get out of his seat, he turns the car off and we are left in darkness. When my eyes adjust I see Sam on the other side of the car looking at me. For a moment we just stare at each other, two goldfish in the middle of the ocean. I am first to break the silence.

"Sam you arse, what was that?"

"I'm sorry, I guess I fell asleep." He says it like he's apologising for being late to school.

"Sam what are you even thinking we could have died, what's wrong with you?" I'm shouting now, shouting and shaking.

"Hey we didn't die, I only went to sleep for a minute tops."

I bang my fist on the roof of the car, "How long doesn't matter, you are the biggest idiot.."

"Are you complaining?"

I realise that even if he is the worst driver ever, I'd still rather be in this cornfield then at home crying in my bed so I  bite my lip and keep my words inside.

Sam hunts out a flashlight and walks around the car inspecting the damage, despite the hammering his car had taken it seems to still be in pretty good shape, Sam rips off a piece of panelling, then kicks the back tyre. "Yep good old Toyota."

There's another period of silence.

"So what now?"

He already seems to know the answer "Well we can't drive out of here while it's dark, we'll just get more lost." I nod, it seems reasonable.

"So I guess we sleep in the car."

I would have been okay with that if he hadn't given me this weird look,  I begin to question what I'm doing here, alone, with a guy I barely know, in a cornfield where they'll never find my body.

Suddenly I'm convinced Sam is going to murder me, or at least eat me or something,. I back away from the car.

"No way."

"Why not?"

"Because I won't be able to sleep."

"Okay well I'm tired, so good night Aimee." Sam shuffles into the car and he slides the driver's seat back to use as a mattress , then climbs into his sleeping bag.

I cross my arms across my chest, there is no way I'm going in there, he probably crashed the car on purpose.

Ten minutes later Sam still hasn't come to murder me and I have goose pimples on my arms, I shiver in the cold.

After fifteen minutes I give in, I'd rather be murdered then die of hypothermia. I open the passenger's door and climb in next to Sam who hands me a sleeping bag.

I wriggle around for a while, until I find a comfortable position.

"Why were you worried about sleeping in the car?" Sam's face isn't far from mine.

I feel kinda stupid now, if he wanted to murder me then he would have done it by now. "ummm well I was scared you were going to eat me or something."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

Sam chuckles next to me, his face is close now; within kissing distance, but I'm not that sort of girl.

"I'm sorry about crashing the car."

"It's okay, just warn me next time eh?"

I'll do my best."

We sit in silence for a while, I listen to him breathe, in then out, I begin to feel myself relax.

"Night Aimee."

"Night Sam."

As the sun rises over the corn and begins to warm the car interior I wake up, feeling stiff but rested. I climb out of the car and stretch my body; clicking my neck in a way that is defiantly not good.

Sam is up already, and has a bunch of corn cobs in both arms; "ready for breakfast?"
