6. Six - I Love You

Jack turned sharply into the hospital parking lot almost hitting a few people and peeled into a parking spot. He hopped out of the car and darted into the building. Jack’s panic didn’t helped as he franticly looked around the room for the boy he’d begun to see as his best friend. He fumbled with his phone as he pulled it out of his pocket, dropping it on the floor. Jack sighed grabbing it off the floor, seeing the cracked screen causing him cuss under his breath. Jack looked up seeing Mark running over to him.

“Jesus fuck Mark! What did I fuckin’ tell ye!” Jack shouted in panic, “I said not to make me worry Fischbach!”

“I am so sorry Jack I-“Mark was taken aback as he was suddenly pulled into a hug by Jack. He held onto Mark as hard as he could, like if he let go Mark would disappear. Jack had been so afraid of losing Mark all night, he’d never felt this way about anybody before, Mark meant the world to him. He was shaking violently as he held his grip on the crying boy.

“Don’t ever scare me like that again.” Jack murmured into Mark’s shoulder. Mark had realized that with Jack he felt way calmer, he felt safe.

After what felt like an eternity the two boys both let go, Jack checking Mark over, curious what had happened.

“Are ye alright?” Jack asked softly, tilting his head up a bit to look into the taller one’s eyes.

“No…” Mark sniffed, tears running down the boy’s checks, Jack, reaching up and wiping them away.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Can we do that in the car, I just really want to go home.” Mark rubbed his eyes.

“Sure, that’s fine.” Jack half-smiled, “Ye can stay at me house tonight if ye want.”

“Would it be alright if we stayed at mine instead? Sorry, I just don’t like people seeing me like this and I’d rather not have your parents or siblings to hear.” Mark mumbled.

“Of course, don’t be sorry, I know how ye feel remember.” Jack said, Mark suddenly thought of Jack’s tear streaked face and puffy eyes, He shook the thought quickly, he never wanted to see him like that again.

“Ryan, I’m in love with you.” Felix blurted without thinking.

“What!?” He heard Ryan gasp.

“No-Nothing… Just forget it.” Felix looked over at Ken who sat, wide-eye’d, mouth agape.

“D-Did you just say you were i-in love with m-m-me?” Ryan shook his head in disbelief.

“Can we just talk in person? Please?” Felix begged.

“Yeah, where do you want to meet? Ryan asked.

“The rooftop?”

Felix and Ryan met on the roof of the school two hours later. Both of the boys immediately rushed to each other, hugging one another as tight and close as humanly possible.

“I missed you so much!” Ryan cried.

“I missed you too Cry!” Felix buried his face in his best friend’s shoulder.

“I am so sorry, I shouldn’t have pushed you away, my feelings for you scared me so I tried to hide and it didn’t work and I am so fucking sorry Felix, I love you so much and I can’t deny it anymore, I knew for so long… Even before Marzia…” Ryan sobbed. Felix was in shock, unable to believe what he’d just heard.

“Wait what? Really?” Felix had no idea what to even say, he was so in shock.

“Yeah…” Ryan had pulled away from the hug and was now standing pretty far from Felix.

“I-I, How? Why me? Are you sure?” Felix asked, thinking it was a harsh prank.

“Yes! Yes Felix! Y-E-S! I’m sorry, I can’t hold my feelings back any longer, I love you Felix.” Ryan snapped at the other boy. Felix had nothing to say, he didn’t know how to express his feelings for his friends other than to grab the boy and kiss him… So, he did. Felix gripped the boy by the front of his shirt yanking him over and crashing their lips together. Ryan’s body stiffened, surprised by Felix’s suddenness.

“I love you too Ryan…”

Mark and Jack were laid out across Mark’s bed, silent, listing to the beat of the rain on the roof, neither boy was tired or even close to falling asleep, just lying in the quiet room. Jack was listening to the unsteady, shaking breaths.

“Mark?” Jack whispered.

“Mmm, Yeah?” Mark whispered back.

“What happened tonight?”

“My mom is dying…” Mark mumbled, feeling the tears reforming in his eyes, “My brother’s in critical condition and my dad is dead.”

“Oh my god…” Jack placed his hands of his mouth, “I am so fuckin’ sorry… I feel so bad…” Jack rolled over onto his side and wrapped his arms around Mark, trying to comfort the older one.

“We were on our way home, we had been at dinner, it’s my dad’s birthday so we went for dinner and met with some family friends, and all of us went back to the friend’s house after and stayed for quite a long time on the way home a drunk driver was on the wrong side of the road, my dad died instantly, my mom got shards of glass sprayed over her body, causing her to lose more blood than she should have… my brother was sitting behind my dad when we crashed and I don’t know what happened to him, I made it out with only a few bang ups… I would give my life for my dad to still be alive…” Mark told Jack who hadn’t let go of him.

“I am so sorry, it’s so unfair that ye have to go through this all.” Jack looked at Mark seeing his tear stained face. Jack reached up and wiped away some stray tears from his eyes.

“I know, this hurts so much… I don’t know what to do…” Mark sniffled, “I just really, I feel… I have so many mixed feelings right now Sean, I just-“

“Jack.” He corrected, “Sorry I just really hate… Sean. That name just, I-I hate it.”

“Why, it’s such a c-cool name?” Mark asked, tripping over his words.

“That’s because it was me dad’s name, he was an alcoholic, drug addict and a wife beater. He used to go out and get drunk, then when he’d come home he’d verbally and physically abuse my poor mother, I could never help…” Jack’s voice trailed off, trying not to start crying, “I got beaten pretty badly a few times from trying to help my ma, I really hated him… He bailed on me ma and I… That’s why I hate me name Mark.” Jack finished his story and rubbed his eyes trying to stop himself from crying.

“I’m sorry Jack, I didn’t know… I just think the name Sean is really cute- uh, c-cool.” Mark stuttered.

“Cute?” Jack asked.

“That’s not what I meant I-I’m just overtired.” Mark tried to lie.

“Oh, okay…” Jack replied, finally letting go of the other boy and rolled over, “I-I’m kinda tired to Mark, Sleep well…”

“You too…” Though neither boy was actually ready to sleep, both wanted to keep talking, both completely and madly in love but were unable to admit it to themselves let alone each other.
