A Tale of Two Mates

Dark secrets surround the heart of the two most powerful packs in this forest, the Swift pack and the Storm pack. Secrets that go back hundreds of years. Arya Swift soon finds herself in the middle of it all when she stumbles across the son of the Storm pack's Alpha. It doesn't take long for her to realize she's found her mate. Ethan Storm brings nothing but trouble with him, however, and leads the Storm pack right into the heart of the Swift territory. When Arya's mother, the Alpha, is killed, the Beta, Jake, takes over. Arya trusts his judgement until she comes of age and takes over, until she realizes Jake has a plan of his own, and it has nothing to do with Arya.

8. Chapter 8

{Arya}

          I woke up in my own bed, I was back at home. I blinked a few times. My head... It was about to explode, a throbbing pain spread from a bump on the back of it. I lightly ran my hand through my hair and sat up. I groaned. What... What happened? How did I get here? I got up and walked to the door. Where... where was I? I opened my door to see a strange man standing outside. He turned to greet me when he noticed I was there.

        "Thank goodness you're awake!" He seemed oddly relieved. Maybe he knew what happened?

        "Who... who are you? Where am I?" I pleaded softly. I just wanted to know what happened... A look of confusion passed over his face.

        "Oh dear, you don't remember? That sure was a mighty blow to the head, I tried to stop them, my patrol came across you too soon I'm afraid," He looked solemn. "You and your mate were surrounded by a rogue pack, by the time we came across the scene you were out cold and bleeding from the head and your mate was in a much worse condition."

         "Mate?" I asked. Rogue pack? Who was he? He had the stance and attitude of an Alpha, but why was he leading a patrol? Was there some conflict going on?

        "Unfortunately he perished by the time we got his body back to the camp, I am sorry, child." He looked away. I wanted to be sad, I wanted to be sorry for myself, but how can I grieve for someone I don't even know?

        "Who are you?" I asked him, looking at him confused. He met my gaze once more, a look of authority passing across his eyes.

        "Alpha Jake Sparrow, of the Sparrow pack, you are a member here, even though you are the Omega, you are still a member. You are safe here." He told me gently. He was alpha? I bowed my head to him. I was the Omega and here I was so openly speaking. I said nothing. He smirked. "If I may, please leave now, Omega. I'm sure someone might help you back to your home," He said, his tone slowly growing colder. I kept my gaze down and I left the house, still in my pale blue pajama pants and grey t-shirt. I stood on the porch for a moment. This... this place, I lost something here. Someone, someone close to me. Flashes of wolves grappling around this house flashed through my mind,but I couldn't put my finger on it. Not wanting to insult the Alpha, I went on my way. I leapt off the porch, shifting into my wolf in mid-air. The throbbing came back full force. I winced. I had to find somewhere to go, before I accidentally stumbled onto someone else's land and I was killed. I picked my way through the forest carefully. Familiar scents came up to meet my nose. A warmth spread throughout me as a memory flashed briefly through my mind. A pair of warm hazel eyes... A gentle laugh. Was this my mate that I lost? Even with my amnesia, I should still feel the intense grief of losing my mate, however what do I know. I stop in my tracks with a sudden horror. What is my name? Who am I? My ears flick back. I can't remember anything... A feeling of dread slowly crept up my spine. Something wrong was going on here. Something horribly wrong. I looked back at the house I could just barely see through the trees. Sparrow pack... That name didn't sit well in my stomach. I put my nose to the ground. Perhaps if I follow this trail, I will reach the last place my mate was before we were ambushed. I followed his trail for a while until I came to a large Oak tree in the heart of the woods. I scanned the area, delicate flowers grew among its roots, and the tree had an odd shape to one section, almost like there should be a door there... I shook my head. I sniffed the ground. There were now four scents, one smelled of light vanilla, the next was my own scent  which had been mingled with my mates the entire way here. The third struck a chord in my mind. Pine, the smell of warm pine needles just crushed in your fingers hit my nose. I flicked my ears forward. Something strange happened. My trail then followed the two strange scents and my mates went off to the left into some thick shrubbery. I followed it to find the scent was strong in one spot, he had sat here for a moment. Why did he leave me? Who were the other two scents? I picked up my pace as I followed his trail. The urge to find him became even stronger the more I followed his scent. Where was he going? I had to find out. Soon a strange scent started fading in with the scent of the pack I came from. I had reached the border between two packs. Why was he walking along the border? Suddenly I noticed a trail was following his. Did he know they were here? Then his scent stopped and the other began circling him. The image of what happened played out in my head. He walked across the border, not paying attention. What was on his mind? Suddenly this other wolf comes out of the shadows and stops him. It was a wolf from the other pack, his scent matched the other one. He wasn't pleased my mate was walking so close to his territory. I smelled three other scents come into the fray. I sniffed the ground anxiously. Was there blood? Was this where he died? Then something very curious happened, the small pack, my mate at the center, moved off into the other territory. I lifted my head and looked into the dark woods ahead of me. He was out there. I looked back at the familiar land behind me, thinking for just a moment before I stepped forward into the unknown land. I had no idea where I was, who I was, or where I was headed, but I knew I had to follow his scent, he was killed in this land, and I was absolutely determined to find out what was going on here.
