3. It's Complicated

Lola isn’t waiting for us when we return. Lotta is sitting at a bench, swinging her worn trainers underneath the bench. Marv remembers himself and quickly pulls his hand from my grasp, wiping it on his jeans and giving me a small, sheepish smile.

“Hey Lotta! You drawing something…?”

I don’t listen to her response, instead glancing about the playground looking for Lola.

“Hey Lotta – Oh, sorry.”

Marv frowns at me for interrupting her, but she responds, “Yes Charlie?”

“Do you, do you know where Lola is?”

She points to my right, before continuing her animated description to Marv. Sure enough, Lola is wandering across the field carrying a sheet of paper, her hand bunched around a fistful of colouring pencils. She spots me and runs, her little feet skittering across the concrete.

“Look Charlie! Charlie! Look!”

“What is it Lola?” I say, smiling. I take the picture from her outstretched hands.

“I drewed you and Marv behind the PE shed.”

And so she had. It really was a very good drawing as well. Marv has his eyes closed, a thin, shaky hand pulling a stickman-Charlie towards him. There’s a big heart above our heads and the letters ‘BESTEST FREINDS’ printed in a messy scrawl beneath. My breath catches in my throat.

“This… this is lovely Lola. I love it.”

I swallow.

“Can I… Can I keep it?”

But Lola isn’t listening. “I’m glad you love it Charlie. Jordan loved it too. He said it was the bestest drawing he’d ever seen.”

I skip a breath.

“In fact, he loved it so much he took a picture of it.”

Lola! Why did you let him take a picture of it?"

Lola's face falls, and so does the picture. "I'm... I'm sorry Charlie... I was so happy someone liked my picture, I..."

"That's not why he took the picture! Lola, you're so stupid!"

Lola looks as if she might cry. "That's... That's mean, Charlie..."

My heart is thumping so hard, in my chest, in my temples, in every cell of my body. I hate Lola. I hate Jordan. But most of all, I hate myself, for making that stupid card, and hiding it badly, so he could find it and then kiss me...

My heart jolts. It's Marv.

"What's that picture, Lola?"

Lola is smiling again. "Oh, it's of you and Charlie!"

"Shhh, Lola, not so loud!" I hiss.

"Do you like it?"

"Umm... It's... Really nice, Lola. You... Haven't shown it to anyone else, have you?"

Lola's smile fades, and she glances at me. "Umm... No. Only Charlie."

"No, she showed it to Jordan... And he took a picture of it," I say. "Marv... Marv, he's gonna share it with everyone... And everyone will laugh at us..."

Marv grabs my wrists and locks his eyes with mine. "Charlie... Stop worrying... Maybe they'll think she just drew it from her imagination."

"Oh, no," Lola said. "I told him it was something I absolutely and completely saw with my own two eyes."

"Lola!" I yell, making her jump.

"Charlie, Charlie," Marv whispers, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Don't yell at her. She doesn't know how..." He doesn't finish his sentence.

The bell rings, every chime stabbing me in the head.

"It'll be okay, Charlie," Marv says as we walk down the corridor to class.

But, before we can enter the classroom, someone blocks the way.

It's Jordan.
