The year is 2021, and a third World War is in full swing. A group of teenagers have been able to live in the country and escape most of the crazy war lifestyle. They reside in a large mansion owned by the King and Queen of the Republic of England. There's a school being run, and a lot of kids running around. There will be a turn in the war soon. It's going to be a revolt from the creatures most people don't even believe in.

5. Leaving the Mansion

“Full name?” The soldier, a man in his late twenties, asks Bella.

“Bella Destiny Smith,” the girl smiles.

The man looks down at the papers in his hands that are over the five kids in front of him. “Ah, so you can wield black magic.”

“Yes sir,” the smile falls from Bella’s face.

The soldier reads the rest of her file to himself. Age-17; height-5’8”; weight-136lbs.; threat-no. “Hm,” he looks up and steps to the left to be in front of Daniel. “Name?”

“Daniel Pendleton,” Daniel closes his hands into fists.

“Ah, you’re the special one,” the man shuffles through his papers. “You can capture spirits in your camera and wield a giant sword. Very impressive.”

The man shows no emotion and looks down at Daniel’s file. Age-18; height-6’; weight-183lbs.; threat-could be. Without looking up, he steps to the left to be in front of Paige. “Name?” He glances up.

“Paige Joy Myers,” the youngest of the group seems so small in this moment.

“You can wield a sword as well. Better than many people.”

“I guess,” her face flushes red.

“Hm,” the man reads over her file. Age-16; height-5’3¼”; weight-118lbs.; threat-no. This time he looks up as he steps to the left to be looking at Riley. “Full name?”

“Riley Faith Lancaster,” the leader stands up taller. “You should know the name.”

“Of course, your father is high up in politics. And with you being able to control people with your singing and guitar playing.”

“I have never helped my father move up in the government,” Riley growls.

“Mhmm,” the soldier looks down at Riley’s file. Age-17; height-5’6½”; weight-127lbs.; threat-likely to be yes.

“Do not bad mouth my father, because I will remember your face.”

“Calm down girly,” the man steps to the left for the last time. “Lastly, your name boy.”

“Lucas Volkov,” the oldest boy replies.

“Your file doesn’t say your skill.”

“I’m a vampire,” Lucas smirks, his fangs slowly coming into view.

Riley tenses and grabs the vampire boy’s hand.

“Hm, can you prove it?” The soldier asks.

“I’d rather not,” Lucas runs his tongue over his teeth.

The man shrugs and looks down at Lucas’s file. Age-unknown; height-6’2”; weight-188lbs.; threat-yes. “Holding hands, I see,” he doesn’t look up. “That’s cute.”

Lucas growls and squeezes Riley’s hand.

The soldier, ignoring the threat, steps back and looks at the five kids. “Alright, this is your last night in the mansion. Tomorrow, we head to a military base to train you. You are needed to end the war.”

That last sentence is more true than anyone in the room knows.

Riley looks over her room. She doesn’t have much, so the backpack on the floor is only half full of what she wants to take with her.

“I can’t believe I’m leaving,” Riley zips up her guitar case. “I’ve been here for so long, so many years.”

The group leaves early tomorrow to head into the middle of nowhere. Riley wonders if her father knows what is happening to her.

She sighs and moves her guitar case and backpack to the door. The backpack is lighter than expected, but understandable. All that’s in it is a few outfits, some small stuffed animals, a couple books, and multiple notebooks.

In the room across the hall, Bella is having a little trouble getting all her things into her backpack.

“Ugh,” Bella frowns as she forces the zipper closed.

Her bag is half full of spell books, and the other half is some outfits, a couple wands, and a blanket from her parents.

“Geez, that was way more difficult than I expected,” Bella stands up and flops onto her bed.

She’s not sure if she will be able to handle the training. Black magic to have a little fun is one thing, to use it on other people is a whole other story. There’s no way she will be able to do it.

Paige smiles as she tosses her backpack by the door. She only had clothes to pack, as well as some books and old plushies.

          “So easy,” she sighs.

Even though she’s the youngest, she is the calmest of all the girls. If she has to use her skill to kill others so the war ends, so be it. She’s already had a hard life up until being sent to the mansion.

“I just want this stupid was to be over,” Paige lies down on her bed and closes her eyes. “And it seems the end is near.”

In another part of the mansion, Lucas is watching Daniel pack.

“You only had clothes?” Daniel asks.

“Yeah, I’ve learned that material possessions aren’t that special.” Lucas shrugs. “So I don’t have much other than clothes.”

          “What do you have?”

“Some rings and books from fellow vampires.”

“That is cool,” Daniel places more folded shirts into his backpack. His mostly consists of clothes and books. “So, how do you think the girls are handling this? I’m quite anxious.”

“I’m interested,” Lucas can’t will his fangs back in at the moment, and he can’t seem to stop running his tongue over them. “Bella is scared and nervous, she hates using her magic for anything more than pranks. Paige isn’t feeling anything but peace. She wants this war over more than anyone since it made her hard life worse. And Riley is wondering about many things.”

“Speaking of Riley, what did you do to her wrist?”

“I bit her, and it didn’t heal,” Lucas runs a hand through his hair. “I don’t know why. I’ll never bite her there again.”

          “That’s quite weird.”

“Her body might not have been up for it, and couldn’t heal right away.”

“No need to worry about it now, she’s all good.” Daniel zips up his backpack.

“I’m going to go check on her,” Lucas walks over to the door.

“Give her a kiss for me, will ya?”

“Oh, shut up,” Lucas chuckles and exits the room, speeding right to Riley.

“I can’t believe you are leaving,” Ms. Yui sighs. “You all are going to have to promise me somethings, since I won’t be able to watch over you.”

“We’ll promise anything, Ms. Yui,” the five students reply.

“Good. First, do what is right to end the war, not what the military tells you is right. Second, make sure you stick together. Third, make sure you do what makes you happy. And lastly, make me proud.”

“We promise, Ms. Yui!” The five students smile.

“What is going on in here?” The soldier man bursts into the classroom. “We need to go. Now!”

“We were just saying goodbye to our favorite teacher,” Riley rolls her eyes.

“I don’t care. Grab your stuff and let’s go.”
