They noticed men working as the cycled past, men stood outside filleting whilst others were loading fish onto trucks and Lorries.

Fishermen were unloading their catches and the sprats and herrings were being loaded by the ton. Further along the quayside old sailors were repairing nets and smoking clay pipes.

They came to a steep staircase that was several hundred feet above them when they noticed a young man running for all he was worth up them.

They stopped and waited until he reached the top then he turned and began to descend.

After a minute or so the young lad got to the bottom and then began to do press ups.

Then he got up and began to shadow box.

“Good morning he said as he turned to see the two young girls watching him.

“Goedemorgan said Britta; as the lad flexed the muscles in his arms.’

“You girls aren’t from around here he said as he jogged on the spot.

“No we’re from Holland; we just got in off the ferry.

“Yes, it comes in every morning I see it whilst I do my training.’

“What are you training for asked Dani inquisitively?

“I’m a boxer I use these stairs and the Tiger Stairs to keep me fit.’

“How many times do you run up them?

“About thirty times each day; it strengthens the legs you see.’

“Yes we see said Britta as she looked upon his legs and bare torso.

His back was huge and his waist trim, he had a mop of curls on his head which gave him the look of a gypsy. He came closer and as he did so Britta noticed that his eyes were green.

“Do you live round here then?

“I used to; I was born not far from here in a place called the Ridges Estate.

“Why is it called so?

“It was named after a farm that they built the houses on.’

“Is this place big?

“Yes, pretty much.’ I live in Whitley Bay now.’

“Do you know where the Rex Hotel is?

“Yes, I should do I’m fighting there next Saturday.

“Could you take us to it as Dani and I are going to be working there in the reception?

It’s a few miles away mind but I’m sure you will keep up. Hold on until I get my tracksuit and vest from the store here.

The man went inside then returned and then began to put on his vest and then the tracksuit bottoms over a pair of black boots.

“Why do you wear boots?
