The Crossing

"The Crossing" tells of two Dutch girls in 1970 who come looking for work on the DFDS ferry- it is In North Shields they meet Mickey Boom Boom McCabe a local boxer who helps them find digs in Whitley Bay- one of the girls becomes romantically involved with Nigel Worthington a local business man and crook when she is working with her friend in the Rex Hotel as a receptionist. Worthington set up another boxer Jeff Decker when Jeff goes to collect a strange package he opens it to discover two kilo's of coke. He recuts the coke and sells it. Worthington finds out and Jeff ends up in hospital with a broken jaw and several ribs. Mickey McCabe rallies his boxing friends together where they mete out their kind of punishment- Mickey is forced to move to London and gets involved with the underworld after Worthington seeks revenge- Can Mickey fulfil his dream and become the welterweight champion of the world- in this story which will take you around the North East - London and Zaandam in Holland.

His father and mother hugged him when he climbed down from the ring holding the WBC belt.

Bloody marvellous son; said his father through his tears; I’ve never been as proud of you as I am at this moment. You did it and the whole of North Shields never forget what you have done. The photographers clicked away as Joe Myers and Eric Clark hugged Mickey. You have made us proud said Joe and I am over the moon that one of my boys has done well for himself.

“Aye well done Mickey lad said Eric.

Mickey left them and went to Seals dressing room and shook hands with Ray.

“Man you is some fighter said Ray smiling as they embraced.’

“I hope we can be friends now said Ray as all that shit I said out there is all hype man.’

“Yes of course Ray, how about dinner with your wife and family?

“Yes I would like that very much.’

“Tonight then?

“Yeah sure thing Mickey.’

The celebrations lasted for over a month where Mickey was invited to the civic hall in Newcastle with his wife.

He had an open topped bus parade around North Shields where he stood with Joe and Eric as they held up his WBC belt.

 

Mickey McCabe went on to defend his world title four times before losing to Roberto Duran on points in a classic fight. He still lives in Oostzaan on his farm where he now has two boys; Mickey Junior and Arjan Joe.’

He goes around the country giving after dinner speeches and raises money for Boys clubs. Mickey Boom, Boom McCabe the kid from North Shields who rose above everything to become champion of the world.
