The Crossing

"The Crossing" tells of two Dutch girls in 1970 who come looking for work on the DFDS ferry- it is In North Shields they meet Mickey Boom Boom McCabe a local boxer who helps them find digs in Whitley Bay- one of the girls becomes romantically involved with Nigel Worthington a local business man and crook when she is working with her friend in the Rex Hotel as a receptionist. Worthington set up another boxer Jeff Decker when Jeff goes to collect a strange package he opens it to discover two kilo's of coke. He recuts the coke and sells it. Worthington finds out and Jeff ends up in hospital with a broken jaw and several ribs. Mickey McCabe rallies his boxing friends together where they mete out their kind of punishment- Mickey is forced to move to London and gets involved with the underworld after Worthington seeks revenge- Can Mickey fulfil his dream and become the welterweight champion of the world- in this story which will take you around the North East - London and Zaandam in Holland.

Again Mickey pursued his man he ducked under the punches thrown by Seals and pounded the body of the American fighter forcing him back onto the ropes a left then a right had Seals in trouble and he had to cover up using the golden gloves to shield his face.

Mickey switched his attack to the rib cage of seals and played a tattoo of punches on his man until he managed to get away from the ropes.

Harry Carpenter was a loss for superlatives as he described how the Englishman was literally destroying the American with combination punching of the highest quality.

“They cannot keep this pace for fifteen rounds said Carpenter someone has got to give.

The bell sounded to end the second round.

In the next four rounds Mickey kept up the pressure on his man he never gave him a minute to settle and seals just couldn’t get his shots off quick enough. Mickey was fighting like a man possessed.

Round seven Mickey said to himself as he came out again and got straight into the attack two jabs from Seals were parried and then a murderous left hook bounced off the Americans jaw he lost control of his legs and fell into the corner.

Mickey ran to the neutral corner as Arthur Mercante began the count Seals mouth piece came out and landed on the canvas he groped with his gloved hand to put it back into his mouth but his co-ordination failed him Then he grabbed the rope to try to haul himself to his feet. The count was at eight at this point. Seals managed to get to his feet as Mercante asked him if he was able to continue. Seals nodded then the referee waved Mickey back in. A left, aright to the solar plexus and a left hook sent Seals down for a second time. He was out before hitting the canvas and his body slumped through the ropes and onto the time keepers table.

Arthur Mercante waved the fight over and Mickey fell to his knees. He had done it he’d defied his critics and all the doubters. He was World Champion. No one could ever take that away from him now.

Britta climbed into the ring and hugged and kissed her husband he still found the strength to lift her off her feet.

Terry Lawless and Jimmy Tibbs congratulated him. “You did a great job on him they said. Mickey then gave an interview for NBC sports and another before the official result was announced. Michael Buffer took the mike the said after seven rounds of boxing Ray Seals was counted out after two minutes and ten seconds YOUR WINNER AND THE NEW WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD MICKEY BOOM, BOOM McCABE.
