The Crossing

"The Crossing" tells of two Dutch girls in 1970 who come looking for work on the DFDS ferry- it is In North Shields they meet Mickey Boom Boom McCabe a local boxer who helps them find digs in Whitley Bay- one of the girls becomes romantically involved with Nigel Worthington a local business man and crook when she is working with her friend in the Rex Hotel as a receptionist. Worthington set up another boxer Jeff Decker when Jeff goes to collect a strange package he opens it to discover two kilo's of coke. He recuts the coke and sells it. Worthington finds out and Jeff ends up in hospital with a broken jaw and several ribs. Mickey McCabe rallies his boxing friends together where they mete out their kind of punishment- Mickey is forced to move to London and gets involved with the underworld after Worthington seeks revenge- Can Mickey fulfil his dream and become the welterweight champion of the world- in this story which will take you around the North East - London and Zaandam in Holland.

Look dad it will only be until next month when Mickey defends his British title. He will earn £50 grand so he will be able to pay you back.

“Alright Britta when do you need the money?

“Can we bring the money tomorrow Mr Baenen?

 “Yes.’ of course you can and will you give me a week or two to move my stuff out.

“Yes, of course we will.’

Mickey Shook hands with Mr Baenen as they left. He looked at Britta then said “Look’s like we bought ourselves a farm.’

“Isn’t it beautiful Mickey, we are going to be so happy together I promise you.’

“It’s going to be hard work but I look forward to learning all there is to know about the farming business.’

Mickey drove them back to Zaandam to her father’s house where Mickey thanked Arjan and told him that he would pay him the money after his next fight which would be against Ralph Charles.


Mickey spent the next few days with Britta they travelled ate in some fancy restaurants and made love in the evening. On the Friday Mickey had to return to London to start his training. He gave Britta the cheque for twenty thousand and told her that he would see her after the fight.

“Will you call me when you arrive in London Mickey?’

“Yes soon as I get back; I promise.’

He stood on the deck of the ferry that he was now getting used to crossing from country to country.

He drove back to his flat in London then rang Terry his manager first to see if he had arranged the fight with Ralph Charles.

“It’s on Mickey March the 15th Wembley Arena.

“How much am I getting; I just bought a farm and need money to pay back a loan.’

 “It will be about £52.000 Mickey with television rights and your cut of the gate.’

“Right I will be in the gym tomorrow morning at nine o’clock; I will see you then.

“I have to go back home to visit my mother and father. I haven’t seen them in a while.’

“Be careful Mickey; Nigel Worthington still has the word out on you.’

“I’m not worried about him Terry; I’m not staying anyway I will be there and back tonight.

“Alright, see you in the morning.
