The Crossing

"The Crossing" tells of two Dutch girls in 1970 who come looking for work on the DFDS ferry- it is In North Shields they meet Mickey Boom Boom McCabe a local boxer who helps them find digs in Whitley Bay- one of the girls becomes romantically involved with Nigel Worthington a local business man and crook when she is working with her friend in the Rex Hotel as a receptionist. Worthington set up another boxer Jeff Decker when Jeff goes to collect a strange package he opens it to discover two kilo's of coke. He recuts the coke and sells it. Worthington finds out and Jeff ends up in hospital with a broken jaw and several ribs. Mickey McCabe rallies his boxing friends together where they mete out their kind of punishment- Mickey is forced to move to London and gets involved with the underworld after Worthington seeks revenge- Can Mickey fulfil his dream and become the welterweight champion of the world- in this story which will take you around the North East - London and Zaandam in Holland.

“Be careful Mickey; he’s done this before he makes you think he’s injured and then he unleashes the right.’

He took another sip of water then Jimmy Tibb’s his cut man, pushed his mouth piece back into his mouth. Mickey looked over in Adelphi’s corner, he didn’t look comfortable, but Mickey heeded the advice from the corner. He kept up the pressure going into rounds seven to nine.

In the tenth round Terry was right Adelphi came out like a refreshed fighter and he threw punches from every angle with both hands. Mickey bobbed and weaved then used his feet to get out of trouble. Those weights around his ankles had turned out to be a God send because he danced away from Adelphi and returned jabs and hooks until the round was over.

“Mickey; two rounds to go now he’s behind on the score cards he’s going to come at you so be ready for him.’

Okay Terry.’

Good lad now is the time to start unloading on this guy. He doesn’t like the body shots so get in close and punish his guts. When he drops his hands put everything behind that left hook of yours.

He adjusted his trunks as he stood waiting for Adelphi to come out for round eleven.

Just as Terry had said Adelphi came at him he waited keeping out of distance then he slipped to the side then unleashed a body assault on his man he went back against the ropes and Mickey waded in then unleashed the boom on Adelphi’s jaw Nothing seemed to happen at first then Johnny fell on his face in the corner.

He was out and Harry Gibbs removed his mouth piece. He then walked over to Mickey McCabe and raised his arm.

“Ladies and gentlemen after one minute and sixteen seconds of round eleven Johnny Adelphi has been counted out’ You winner and the new British Welterweight Champion is Mickey Boom Boom McCabe.

Argent came back on stage and sang “Hold Your Head Up” again as the photographers clicked away.

Britta climbed into the ring and threw her arms around Mickey and kissed him.

Harry Carpenter got hold of him for an interview and asked him how he felt.

“I feel champion he said. Johnny is a clever fighter he gave me a hard fight.’

“Did you expect him to get knocked out?

“No,’ I thought he was very durable and it was only towards the end I was able to get my left hook working.

“He was holding a lot wasn’t he Mickey?’

Wouldn’t you, if someone was popping you on the chin he laughed.’
