“Are you packed then Britta; said her friend in Dutch as she came into the house.

“Hallo Greta; are you keeping well?’

“Yes I’m fine.

“Would you like some coffee and a pastry that I made this morning?’

“Yes thanks; I left in a hurry and didn’t have time to eat.’

Dani sat at the table, she wasn’t as tall as her friend about five feet six inches tall, but she was full breasted and had a cheeky smile. Unlike Britta she had dark hair and hazel coloured eyes it was cut in a short style like her friend. She was wearing a pair of short cut away jeans with a black tee shirt and a pair of hiking boots like Britta.

Pieter came in and kissed Dani; he had known Danique Larsen since they were at school together; he secretly had a crush on her but she only ever thought of Pieter as a friend. There was no romantic spark between them. Greta passed a plate with a pastry for Dani and a cup of coffee. She thanked Greta and took a bite of the sweet pastry which was like a doughnut filled with honey.

How long will it take you to cycle to Amsterdam asked Britta’s father as he lit up his pipe and began to smoke.

“About an hour Arjan said Dani; it depends if we need to stop.’ The traffic should be fairly light we hope.

“Well watch out for motor bikes on the motorway won’t you?

“Yes,’ Arjan we will be careful don’t worry.’

Dani sipped on her cup of coffee as Pieter looked at her from across the table hoping that he wouldn’t be noticed but Britta caught him looking at her.

Poor Pieter she thought; there wasn’t a hope in hell that Dani found him attractive in that way.

Pieter was lanky, very thin, and had a bad case of acne; he was studying engineering at university.

He knew Dani was clever and so was his sister. Both of them had taken a year out from university to travel.

They both liked adventure; whereas he preferred to get his nose into his books and study. His father was also an engineer and was involved with building construction in Wormerveer.

I think we had be making tracks said Britta.’

Dani got up and hugged Greta and Arjan then kissed Pieter on the cheek as she left.

They both turned the adapted cycles around then placed their cycle helmets on and sun glasses.

“See you in a year mother said Britta.’

The two girls set of on their journey and their parents watched until they disappeared into the distance.
