12. Chapter Twelve: Carmen's Black Lake and the Writing on the Wall

When October arrived it was nonstop rain and storms, pounding against the roof the castle. The waters of the eerie black lake continued to rise over the passing days of classes and indoor work. I hadn't heard the creepy voice again at all. Will still looks at me as though I am mad whenever I bring it up, so I have learned not to do that. The lawn had turned into a slippery slope of mud and soil, making it hard to pass over without falling to the soft ground.

I hear a loud voice that has a particular hiss to it, shout, giving me goosebumps up and down my small arms. I am in a large chamber somewhere that I have never seen before. It's enormous and the tunnels remind me of a sewage system.
I wake up to my dorm mates talking loudly, their voices deciding to be annoying to me today. I don't know why but I can tell it's going to be an irritating day, starting with that... And I was right.
When I had entered the great hall, I immediately sat down at the Slytherin table and grabbed some eggs and toast. I was in no mood to be bothered at the moment I had that feeling that something was going to happen. That feeling in your gut that is telling you to be careful. I don't understand it but I may as well follow it. Moments later Will comes into the great hall with Markus. I haven't seen Markus for ages, wow. When they take a seat with me, Markus included. We talk about how our classes have been. We both complain about Lockhart.
"In my opinion he is worse than Quirrel," I say while taking a bite of toast.
        "Agreed," they say in unison.
We really dislike him. He is so cocky and arrogant, it gets very annoying and make me want to vomit. When I tell them this they chuckle and continue to eat. Honestly, I dislike him with a strong passion.

Later that day I am walking the school grounds, the rain having finally have stopped for a little bit. I walk along the black lake quietly and take a seat by a small tree and lean against it. I take out some parchment and decide to write to auntie about what has been going on here lately.

        Dear Auntie,

SO far everything has been great, it's weird that a month has already passed and Halloween approaches quickly. Anna is doing well, you have probably heard that she was sorted into Gryffindor. I was very surprised at that, I expected that she would get Slytherin like Will and I, it sure seemed like it. Recently, I had heard this odd voice that only I could hear. Do you have any idea what it could be? Is that normal? It was creepy and terrifying, it spoke of killing. Auntie, I have a bit of a bad feeling about this year. I hope you reply soon. See you at Christmas!
                                                                                                               Sherie.

I hear cautious footsteps behind me, I slowly pull out my wand and the person leaps in front of me. "Stupefy!" I shout, causing the attacker to be flung into the black lake. In shallow water of course. When I see who it is, I go pale.
"Carmen! Oh my gosh, I am so sorry."
She looks around and screams when she sees where she is. Her blonde hair is wet and sticking to her face. When I pull her out, she starts yelling at me about going in there. Her robes are soaked, dripping on the damp grass. I wish I knew a spell to get her dry. Oh gosh I will NEVER hear the end of this at this rate.
We both walk back inside and go to the Gryffindor common room so she can go dry off and change. I feel awful, she really shouldn't sneak up on me. Daniel comes down the stairs leading to the dorms laughing like crazy.
"I'm going to take a guess and say you caused that beautiful monstrosity!" He says laughing again. "Honestly, what was going through your mind during that?"
"Attacker, defend, Stupefy," I say shrugging. "It was my first instinct."
"Makes sense," He says, "She really shouldn't sneak up on you, I heard about what you did to Malfoy last year."
        "Yeah that was not pretty."
We laugh and complain to each other about Malfoy until Carmen comes trudging down the stairs with her sister at her heels, along with Anna.
I see Anna trying not to smile as Carmen starts to complain about the incident. Daniel just tells her to shut up and she just scowls angrily.
"So nobody cares that I was FLUNG into the black lake that is full of dangerous stuff?" She asks in shock. They nod their heads and she looks at me. "You so owe me."
I chuckle loudly and march down to dinner. On the way I see Sir Nick floating down the corridor, his fog like tint causing you to look through him to the opposite wall.
"Hello Sherie! I have a question for you..." He says.
        "Alright."
"You see, Halloween will be my five-hundredth deathday..." deathday? that is odd, I've never heard of that. "And I was wondering if would you like to come to my party in one of the roomier dungeons. Friends from all over the country will be there and I will be most honored if you will attend. Mr.Potter and his friends will be there also I hope. You may also bring someone if you like."
"I would love to, I'll ask them and would you mind if I come a bit late? I promised I would join a couple people that night." I say, remembering Will, Riley, Daniel and all of them.
"Splendid, I hope to see you there."
I smile at him and continue to walk to the great hall and take a seat across from my friends, Carmen sees me and marches from the Gryffindor table and sits over here to talk with us.
"Hey," She says. Taking a seat across from me.
"Hey on Halloween would you like to come to Sir Nicholas' deathday party?"
" A party with ghosts? heck no, I'd rather swim in the black lake... Oh wait, I HAVE ALREADY DONE THAT!" She exclaims. "No thank you." She finishes. Pushing her food around on her plate.
" Hmmm.... I might" Will says. "But I love candy a little to much. Let me think about it."
When I look at Riley she is frowning slightly.
"I'd rather not Sherie, Sir Nick isn't a fan of me." I sigh and pull my hair into a pony tail.
"What did you do?" I say in a bit of a groan.
"Um... He tried to talk to me and I said "Back off Casper, you corpse.""
        "Riley..." I groan.
"I'm sorry but I was NOT in the mood, it was the day that I thought that I failing my potions class. Snape is a menace..."
"What were you saying Miss. Lancastor?" Says a chilling voice behind us. I shudder as I turn to see Professor Snape scowling behind me.
Riley gulps and stares at him in utter fear. She should not have said that. Talk about bad timing.
"I won't take away any points since you are in my house." He slurs, "Consider this, a warning." He finishes before stalking off to the teachers table.
"Well, that was nice." I say, trying to ease the tension. Everyone seems to relax a little bit. Slowly they start to regain the conversation and go on the same as before.

When Halloween rolled around I was stuffing my face with food before I had to go down to the deathday party. The great hall was decked out with jack-o-lanterns and bats were flying around near the ceiling. After I had scarfed down the last of my meal I started to held down to the dungeons, that is until I hear someone following me. I turn around abruptly and see Markus. I haven't seen him in a while! I look at him and squeeze him in a hug.
"Markus!" I yell happily hugging him.  He asks where I am going and explain. He seems happy and comes along, I was now overjoyed, I was no longer alone. When we grow closer to where we needed to go, it grew colder and colder. I pull my robe tightly around my shoulders as I survey the candle lined wall with the black tapestries.
When we approach sir Nick he gives a small smile and greets us, we are a bit late but he does not seem to mind.  Hundreds of silvery- white ghosts moved around and above us black candles burned a brilliant midnight blue. A horrible music was playing and many of the "people" were waltzing. My breath rose before me and I was freezing. Markus looked the same way and pulled his robe tighter around himself also. Sir Nick is about to start his speech when a bunch of men on horses burst in, stealing the attention. The look on Nick's face is vile, you can tell he is not pleased.
When he tries to speak again they start a game of what looks like head hockey. I get so cold that my teeth chatter. I catch a glimpse of the trio heading up the stairs and I run after them with Markus on my heels. When we catch up we all chat. Then I hear it.
        "Rip....tear...kill...."
I freeze, Harry doing the exact same. he can here it too? He looks at me and gives me a questioning look and I nod my head. He goes to the wall and squints around the dimly lit passage way. While I look around in worry.
        "Harry, Sherie, What're you?-"
"It's that voice again- shut up a minute."
"So hungry.... For so long....." It slurs. "Kill...time to kill....." I let out a small scream and Markus tries to condole me. I could hear the voice growing fainter. It was going to kill someone. No, No. How is it moving up? Was it a ghost or something?
"This way!" Harry shouts, running up the stairs in a hurry. I am right behind him as we enter the entrance hall. Then we move to the first floor so we can hear it. Everyone else is shocked that I can hear it also. Can they not listen?
        "Harry, what're we-" Someone says.
"SHHH!" We strain our ears and hear the voice growing fainter.
"...I smell blood...I SMELL BLOOD!" I start to cry and my stomach gives a large lurch.
"It's going to kill someone!" I yell in horror.
I run up the stairs with Harry to the second floor and three steps at a time, trying to hear over our pounding footsteps. We turn a corner into the last abandoned passage way.
"Harry what was that all about?" Ron asks panting. "I didn't hear anything."
Hermione gasps and shouts "look" and I let a shriek. Foot high words were written on the walls, glistening in the dim light.
"THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPEN. ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE."
        They were written in blood.
I feel tears trailing down my cheeks slowly. Hanging underneath was Mrs.Norris, Filch's cat. It takes longer for them to realize than I do. She was hanging by her tail on the torch bracket. The others were speaking about leaving while I was staring in terrified shock, just as they were about to leave and drag me with them, a rumble from the great hall told me that the feast had just ended. The next moment, students were crashing into the passage way from both ends. I was still standing there in shock and now in panic.
The noise had died down when the people in front spotted the scene before them. Then someone shouted through the quiet.
"Enemies of the heir, beware! You'll be next mudbloods!"
Of course it was none other than Draco Malfoy. He was a bit red in the face and his eyes were dancing with excitement after he had taken a glance of the cat.
"What's going on here? What's going on?" Filch asks, no doubt he heard Malfoy moments earlier.  The moment he sees his cat he falls back clutching his face in horror. "My cat! My cat! What's happened to Mrs.Norris?" Then his eyes land on Harry. He starts yelling at Harry, accusing him of killing the cat. I would have laughed if it were not for the message smeared on the walls.
"Argus!" Dumbledore yells coming into the hall followed my multiple other teachers. In one swift motion he had detached the cat from the bracket and told all of us to go with him.
We enter Lockhart's office, much to my distaste and take a seat while Dumbledore lays the cat on the polished desk. Dumbledore's nose is almost touching the fur of the cat and Lockhart says something.
"It was definitely curse that killed her- probably the transmogrifian torture- I've seen it used many times, so unluckily I wasn't there, I know the very countercurse that would have saved her..."
Filch lets out dry racking sobs as Lockhart tries to continue. Dumbledore is muttering different spells under his breath and tapping the animal with the tip of his wand. Lockhart goes on and on until finally Dumbledore stands up.
"She's not dead Argus." He says calmly.
"Not dead?" Questions Filch. He continues to bombard the headmaster with comments and questions relating to what had happened. He is still visibly upset.
"She has been petrified, but how I can not say..." Says Dumbledore.
"Ask him!" Filch screeched while pointing at Harry.
"No second year could have done this, it would take dark magic of the most advanced-"
"He did it! He did it!" Filch spits. "You saw what he wrote on the wall! He found- in my office- he knows I'm a- I'm a- He knows I'm a squib!" He finishes.
What on earth is a squib? I look over at Markus and he just shrugs. I guess auntie hasn't told him what that means yet.
"I never touched Mrs.Norris! I don't even know what a squib is!" Harry shouts, obviously bothered by all the stares thrown his way.
"Rubbish!" Filch snarls. "He saw my Kwikspell letter!"
"If I might speak headmaster," Says Snape coming out from the shadows, making me jump a bit. Whatever he's about to say probably isn't in Harry's favor. "Potter and his friends may have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time," He says with a sneer. " But we do have a set of suspicious circumstances here. Why was he in the upstairs corridor at all? Why wasn't he at the Halloween feast?"
Harry, Ron, Hermione and Markus begin trying to explain that we were at the death-day party in the dungeons.
"Why not join the feast afterwards?" Snape snarls.
"Because it was nearly over." I state, growing slightly frustrated.
"Why go up that corridor?" He asks, staring directly at me like he was trying to reach my soul. I mentally stutter while Harry is out loud. I don't think that hearing a disembodied voice wouldn't be a good thing to tell the professors.
"Because we were tired and wanted to go to bed." Says Harry.
"Without any supper? I didn't think ghosts provided food fit for living people at there parties."
Ron and I both speak at the same time, him saying he isn't hungry while his stomach rumbled and me telling the professor that I had eaten before going down there.  When he heard Ron, Snape's nasty smile had widened.
"I suggest headmaster, that  Potter is not being entirely truthful. It might be a good idea if he was deprived of certain privileges until he is ready to tell us the whole story. I personally feel he should be taken off the Gryffindor Quidditch team until he is ready to be honest." Snape says.
WHAT? How could he possibly be taken off the Quidditch team because of something he may not of done? It makes no sense at all! Ugh. Profesor McGonagal is stating how ridiculous the idea is and angering Snape. Dumbledore thinks for a moment and says,
        "Innocent until proven guilty, Severus."
When we are told to leave a few minutes later, when they tell us to leave, I run with Markus as fast as I can to the Slytherin Common room. He didn't want me walking alone after what has just happened. I am not afraid to say that I didn't want to be alone.
When we stop in front of the entrance is when I turn around.
"What the heck was that? Why am I able to hear that voice? What does it mean? I'm so confused. " I say rather quickly to him.
"I don't know," He says calmly. "I would recommend being careful, ok?" I nod my head in agreement and give him a hug. Then I whisper the password and go inside quickly and to bed. Not wanting to think about tonight.

For the next few days, all the students would talk about was the attack. It had made so many anxious and worried about what was to happen.  It took a pretty big toll on Carmen who was now cautious while turning corners in the hallways and jumped at small sounds. She is afraid the attacker will get a person next, hence her anxiety.
Will was pretty shaken up and wouldn't speak when I first told him, he loved animals and had the same fear as Carmen about the attacks. Everyone was worried about it happening again, including Anna.
I had come to learn that Anna roomed with Carmen, Carmen's sister and a girl named Ginny Weasley. Ginny was apparently scared out of her wits while Anna started having nightmares. Some people were avoiding me for a reason I do not know of. I also tried to check out a book that would shed some light on the chamber but they were all checked out, probably by other students wanting to do the exact same thing.

When I was half asleep in the class History of Magic, Professor Binns, being a very boring ghost going on and on, something very interesting happened. Hermione put up her hand.
        "Miss-er-" says a stunned Professor.
"Granger, Professor. I was wondering if you could tell us anything about the chamber of secrets," She says in a clear voice. My head shoots up from my desk upon hearing those words.
"My subject is history of Magic," He says in a wheezy voice. "I deal with facts, Miss Granger, not Myths and legends," He says simply. He was beginning to continue again until Hermione's hand shot up once again.
        "Miss Grant?"
" Please sir, don't legends always have a basic fact?"
I looked up again surprised. I highly doubt anybody has interrupted him before in the middle of class. This is very out of the ordinary.
"Well, yes, one could argue that, I suppose. However the legend of which you speak is such a very sensational, even ludicrous tale-"
Everybody in the entire room was staring at the professor. Listening to his every word.
"Oh, very well," He says slowly. "Let me see...The chamber of secrets...
"You all know, of course, that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago- the precise date is uncertain- by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age. The four school houses are named after them: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. They built this castle together, far from prying muggle eyes, for it was an age when magic was feared by common people, and witches and wizards suffered much persecution."
He pauses briefly to gaze around the room for a moment.
"For a few years the founder worked in harmony together, seeking out youngsters who showed signs of magic and bringing them to the castle to be educated. But then disagreements sprang up between them. A rift began to grow between Slytherin and the others. Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed that magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. He disliked taking students of muggle parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy. After a while, there was a series of arguments on the subject between Sytherin and Gryffindor, and Slytherin left the school."
He pauses again. Wait. If he believed in all-magic families... Why am I in Slytherin? I am pretty sure I'm half blood since I was adopted and most families are that, so if I am not pureblood and Slytherin excepts only pureblood...Well, no one says they except only purebloods I guess, but it seems irregular.
"Reliable historical sources tell us this much," He says. "But these these honest facts have been obscures by the fanciful legend of the chamber of secrets. The story goes that Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in the castle, of which the other founders knew nothing. Slytherin, according to legend, sealed the  chamber of secrets so that none would be able to open it until his own true heir arrived at the school. The heir alone would be able to unseal the chamber of secrets, unleash the horrors within, and use it to purge the school of all who were unworthy to study magic."
I can feel my stomach doing somersaults. The horror within? The voice! I bet that voice has to do with these attacks. If only I knew what it was and how it moved around the castle. I can almost bet that there will be another attack. I must be the only one to realize this right now.
After a small argument with an aggravated professor Binns, the class had resumed to it's normal stupor.

I had't spoken the rest of the day, I was to lost in thought at what the professor had said. Honestly, if the chamber has been opened than the heir must be here somewhere. Loads of people thinks it's Harry but I doubt that. Knowing Harry's relationship with Malfoy, Harry will assume it's him. I don't believe that though. Even though Malfoy is a git, I highly doubt that it's him. Something inside me is just telling me that.
When I had repeated the Professor's story to Carmen she was shocked and even more worried than ever. She probably thought that an attack would happen any day now. I wouldn't be surprised either. I now know that, one: The heir must be at the school, two: the voice I am hearing must somehow be linked with the chamber, three: the monster is targeting muggle-borns. I officially do not know what to do. There is nothing to do about this matter which is sad. I wish I could just help in some way. I need to find out what that creature is. I need to. People here are blind to think that another attack won't happen or it won't happen to them. It could happen to anybody. Carmen had agreed with me, we now have a decent plan. Work together to help solve this before someone gets hurt.
When I was sitting in the common room later, Malfoy marched in, his pointy face and slicked back, white-blonde hair prominent as ever. I took the chance to simply ignore him. We haven't had any run ins this year which is good. I am going to take a guess and say I now just detest him. He probably is not my mortal enemy like last year, but I still hate him with a strong passion. His goons flank him as he heads up to his dorm down the boy's corridor.
He walked past me without any smart comment which shocked me. He did glare like I expected though. It's nice to know not everything has changed.
