8. Chapter Eight: Detention and Real Nightmares

Things couldn't have been more worse. We were all sitting in the Professor's study on the first floor. Hermione and I were trembling and I was making a million excuses a minute in my mind. We are in the worst situation possible at the moment. What will the Professor think of us lurking the halls this early? We are done for, I just know it. How were we so stupid as to leave the cloak? I was wrong when I said that things couldn't be worse because Professor comes in with poor Neville.
"Harry!" He exclaims. " I was trying to find you to warn you, I heard Malfoy saying he was going to catch you, he said you had a drag-"
Harry shakes his violently, not avoiding the Professor's notice. She could easily be breathing fire at this very moment. She towers over all of us in an angry rage. She goes on and on until she says that it was a made up story to get Malfoy in trouble and that poor Neville had fallen for it also. Neville looks shocked and hurt. I shake my head no at Neville to try and reassure him. He looks down all sad and avoids my gaze.
"I'm disgusted," says Professor McGonagall. "Five students out of bed in one night! I've never heard of such a thing before! You, Miss Granger, I thought you had more sense. As for you, Mr. Potter and Miss Ghim, I thought your houses meant more to you than this. All four of you will receive detentions- yes, you too, Mr. Longbottom, nothing gives you the right to walk around school at night, especially these days, it's very dangerous- and fifty points will be taken from your houses." I gasp along with Harry.
"Fifty points each," she says angrily. Oh my gosh, Gryffindor just lost one-hundred and fifty points. Harry tries to protest but the professor will not hear of it.

The next morning Gryffindors were shocked to see that they had lost that many points. I'm pretty sure they thought it was a mistake at first. Slytherin was now in the lead, even with my lost fifty point. Our house started to thank Harry once the story had spread. All the other houses on the other hand insulted him. He became the most hated person in the school. I felt so bad. I can't believe that this happened. Will and Riley are still avoiding me. I catch Will turning a corner and grab his elbow.
"Why are you avoiding me?" I ask. Hurt etched into my voice.
"I'm not," he says, while trying to run off. Before he can go very far I grip his arm.
"Oh yes you are!" I say in a bit of a yell.
"Why don't you go hang out with your new friends.. They seem to keep better company." He says and brushes me off.
I can tell he isn't to angry, just a bit sour. I hope that he will see and we can be on good terms again. Well, It's more me on his bad side rather than the other way around.
Besides all of his, everybody has been cruel to me also. I always try to keep my head down and not answer questions in class. I shouldn't have gone up there. What was I thinking? What was Hagrid thinking when he took in that Dragon egg.
Later this week I'm sitting in the great hall eating breakfast when an owl drops me a note telling me when I have to go to detention. I have to meet the awful man Filch at eleven. So later this evening I head to the entrance hall with Malfoy. Trying to not speak with each other, I speed walk there.
When we arrive, nobody is there but Filch. We stand there awkwardly until we Harry, Hermione, and Neville enter.
"Follow me," Says Filch while lighting a lamp.
We venture outside and Filch talks about the old punishments that he wished were still in use He is a sicko. We march across the dark school grounds. I was comforting Neville who was sniffling like crazy. He doesn't deserve to be pushed into all of this.
"Is that you Filch? I want ter get started!"
I could feel relief wash over me. We will be with Hagrid. It shouldn't be to bad with him. I can feel my hopes get crushed when I hear the words "Forbidden Forest".
At those words Neville clutches the sleeve of my robe and whimpers. Hagrid and Filch have an argument and Filch leaves. Malfoy has very clear panic written into his voice when he refuses to go in there.
"Yeh are if yeh want ter stay at Hogwarts," Hagrid says. "Yeh've done wrong an' now yeh've got ter pay fer it."
"But this is servant stuff, it's not for students to do. I thought we'd be copying lines or something, if my father knew I was doing this, he'd-"
"-tell yer that's how it is at Hogwarts," Hagrid growls. "Copyin' lines! What good's that ter anyone? Yeh'll do summat useful or yeh'll get out. If yeh think yer father'd rather you were expelled, then get back off ter the castle an' pack. Go on!"
Malfoy shut up and glared at Hagrid angrily while I let a small smirk creep onto my face.
"Right then," Hagrid says. "now, listen carefully, 'cause it's dangerous what we're going to do tonight, an' I don' want no one takin' risks. Follow me over here a moment."
He leads us over to the very edge of the dark forest. His lamp is held high and he points to a winding, narrow path.
"Look here, see that stuff shinning on the ground? Silvery stuff? That's unicorn blood."
I can't hear anything else that he says. I take in a large breath and begin to tremble. This is my dream, my nightmare. This isn't real, please don't let this be real, please.
So apparently we have to search for the wounded unicorn. Please don't let my nightmare be a reality, please. I have to go with Malfoy and Neville. This should be just lovely (Note the sarcasm).
We take the right side of the fork in the road that we come across, while the others take the left. We walk down the path in silence for a while. I have an arm around Neville's shoulder since he's shaking like a leaf. I myself and trembling and need some support. Suddenly Neville and I are grabbed from behind and Neville shoots up sparks in a panic while my first reaction is turn around and WHAP.
Malfoy groans and rubs his cheek where a red hand print is appearing. The funny thing is that I didn't even plan on doing it. It was a reflex. In a large crack of branches, Hagrid is with us and once I tell him what happened he is fuming. He stomps through the forest with us on his trail.
When we arrive in front of the other two, Hagrid makes us switch groups, with a small apology. I get paired with Harry. Fang the dog and Malfoy and we go back our different ways from the rest.
We set off towards the heart of the forest, our feet crunching against the path. We walk for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper into it. The unicorn blood seemed to be getting thicker. I could see clearly through the tangled branches of an ancient oak.
        "Look-" Harry murmurs, stopping Malfoy.
What was on the ground was beautiful but yet so sad. It's legs were stuck out in odd angles and it's mane was spread out over the dark leaves. Then a bush quivers and a hooded figure crawls towards the animal in a predatory fashion and slowly lowers it mouth to it's wound and starts drinking the silver blood.
Malfoy lets out a horrible scream and runs off with fang in a flash. The figure raised it's head and stood up, towering over our small frames. It looks directly at Harry and I and comes towards us. We both couldn't move out of fear and pain suddenly washes over me. Harry seems to feel the same and we both topple to the ground on our knees.
When I had looked up, the figure was gone and standing before me is a centaur.
"Are you alright?" It asks us, pulling us to our feet.
We say yes and Harry asks him what that was, but gets no answer. His scar is being carefully observed by the man.
"You are the Potter boy. You had better get back to Hagrid. The forest is not safe at this time- especially for you. Can you ride? It will be quicker this way. My name is Firenze."
In a matter of moments, two more centaurs burst through. Sweating and panting. An argument breaks out among them and Firenze rears up in anger, making the two of us hold on for dear life. In a flash he gallops away, leaving the two behind us.
"Harry Potter and friend, do you know what unicorn blood is used for?"
"No, we've only used the horn and tail hair in Potions." says Harry.
"That is because it is a monstrous thing, to slay a unicorn. Only one who has nothing to lose, and everything to gain, would commit such a crime. The blood of a unicorn will keep you alive, even if you are an inch from death, but at a terrible price. You have slain something pure and defenseless to save yourself, and you will have but a half-life, a cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips."
"But who'd be that desperate?" Harry wonders aloud. "If you're going to be cursed forever, death's better isn't it?"
"It is," The centaur agrees. This is when it hits me. Firenze is about to continue but I cut him off.
" Unless you just need to be alive long enough to drink something else, something that brings back all of your strength and power, Something that will keep you from death..." I say, finishing in a whisper. My entire body has grown cold.
"The Sorcerer's stone! Of course- the elixir of life! But I don't understand who-" Harry says, trailing off.
"Can you think of nobody who has waited many years to return to power, who has clung to life, awaiting their chance?"
You-know-who. He was the hooded figure. Voldemort was the cloaked figure and he tried to get to us.... That is when everything goes black.
I was never really sure how I had gotten through my exams. I was already high strung after the incident in the forest, but none the less I did well, I believe. I was able to make a beautiful snuff box in transfiguration and did well in charms. The one I was really nervous about was potions. We had to make a forgetfullness potion with Snape hovering over all of us. He sort of left me alone weirdly. At least I got it done, it was nice not having him breathing down my neck.
Every evening I have been awoken by horrible nightmares, haunting me, tormenting me. The hooded figure making a guest appearance quite often in them. After I had found out we nearly faced you know who, I did pass out. I had  woken up in the hospital wing,  was given a quick pill and was set off once I had woken up. Honestly it was very humiliating to pass out in front of not only Harry, Hermione and Draco but also in front of a centaur and Hagrid. Gosh, what a nightmare.
I sit with Hermione in the library and look through some of the older books and some muggle ones. It's nice to finally relax and enjoy life for the moment. No stress, no fears, nothing. My mind is finally blank and let me tell you, it's a relief! I hate tests and waking up early, but I love school. In no time at all, we will be leaving for the summer. Time is passing quicker than I thought it would.
I remember when I first met Will after getting soaked with water and all those summer afternoons of watching movies and playing board games to pass the time. I long to go back to that moment I got the letter to see his panicked expression again, or when we were all at Christmas and on good terms, or even when we were rolling around in the snow. I want my cousin back. Tears start to form in my eyes and I hold them back best I can. I know this won't last forever, but I need them right now. I need them.
A small tear escapes my eye and I quickly wipe it away before Hermione can see, it's so humiliating to cry in front of someone else. Every once in a while you need it, but now is not the time for that. I wipe another tear and collect my books.
"Hermione, I'm going to head to the lake. Want to join?"
"No thanks, I have to talk with Harry about something." She says. I nod my head and walk out of the library towards the shore of the black lake.
The sun is beginning lower as I lay across the ground, staring at the sky. Now I let the tears fall, I have no reason to hold them back anymore. How did I even lose them? When did this happen? I don't understand. I can't, I just can't! I sit up and sob a little bit until I hear footsteps approaching me from behind. I turn to see Oliver Wood with his broomstick in hand.
        "You alright?" He asks.
"Yeah, Yeah..." I say sniffling and wiping my eyes.
He comes over and takes a seat next to me in silence and puts an arm around me ad I sob into his shoulder.
"It was very kind, what you did, And brave too."
        "What?" I ask bewildered.
"During the Quidditch match, you said we did a good job and said sorry to someone you hit. No Slytherin has done that. I saw Flint drag you away right when those words left your mouth."
        "Yeah, he was angry."
Wood laughs a bit and I suddenly feel much better.
"Don't think of this as the end of the world. Whatever you're crying about. You're only twelve? I believe. You have a whole future at Hogwarts ahead of you." He says. While patting me on the back.
"Thank you," I say, while giving him a hug and standing up.
"The feast should be starting soon, we better go." I say.
We head up together. Oliver acted brotherly, it was nice to have someone to lean on for a bit. I regret saying now wasn't time to lean on someone, because I was dead wrong.
When we arrived to the great hall, I walked to the Slytherin table and took a seat at the end. Away from Malfoy and his Gang. I was thankful they were leaving me alone for right now. I need some alone time.
When the feast is set in front of us, I don't eat. I simply have no appetite, so I head upstairs and lay down early, drifting off into sleep.

I see a wall of fire and bottles aligned on a table. A pair of hand reaches out and looks at each one. My vision turns and I see Hermione inspecting them. What the heck? She chugs one and I drink one also and walk through the flames. When I make it through I see a figure standing in front of a mirror. A wave of pain flashes over me.
I jolt awake sweating. Oh my god. Waves of pain flash over me. I see my dorm mates in here also so I run through the common room and out the doorway. II can tell it's past curfew but I don't care. I go to the first place I think of, Snapes's office. When I enter the cold dungeon I say his name but it comes out as more of a scream when I almost fall down from the agony.
He looks up from what he is doing and storms over to me.
"Miss Ghim, what do you think you are..."
"They are down there sir!" I say while gulping. "With the stone, you know who is down there! Agghhhhh,....." I say and letting out a groan like scream.
He grabs my shoulder and drags me with him and summons McGonagall and we head down there. He has a firm grip on my arm as he makes the dog sleep and opens the trapdoor. McGonagall tries to hold me back but I escape her grasp and jump down there with him and run past Snape as fast as I can. I pass all of these finished obstacles and am met with the wall of flames. My head aches in pain again and then it feels as though it was set on fire. Snape gets rid of the fire and I see Harry getting attacked by Quirrel.
"HARRY!" I scream, "HARRY." Then with a final shriek of pain, I black out and fall against the stone floors.
